Month: March 2023

Sat. Mar. 11, 2023 – non-prepping hobby day.

Warm and damp.  Supposed to be clear though.  Was pretty nice yesterday, and the rain held off, which let me get some stuff done.

Spent the early part of the day on the computer, spent the rest of the day on site for my customer.  Got a bunch of my list done over there.   Still have some stuff to do but it’s less time sensitive.

Today is my non-prepping hobby meeting.  Taking D2 to weaponize teh cute and sell some more GS cookies to the old guys there.   Then we’ll go past my buddy’s gun store and see if he would like some this year.   He’s been a great supporter of their troop.

After that?  Getting stuff moved around and ready for a trip up to the BOL for a week… or maybe doing more stuff around the house that needs doing.    Sunday will probably be Rodeo day.   Kids want to go.  I’m ambivalent.  I could use a ‘small engine’ workshop day before heading to the lake.

In other news, a bank in Cali failed.   Lots of people were caught off guard.   Lots of people are going to rethink their own investments, and where they are as a result.   Could this be the beginning of something like the 2008 problems?   Dunno.   Been expecting something to kick it all off.  Might be this.    It will be SOMETHING when it happens.

Best you can do is live your life, but take the steps to cover yourself and your family for the bad things.  It’s called prepping, and it’s not that hard.   You do have to actually DO it, and not just plan to do it or talk about doing it.

Part of it is stacking up the supplies and other things you see yourself needing.   Easy to do.  Worth doing.  Keep stacking.

Fri. Mar. 10, 2023 – … until morale improves.

Warm and damp.  Maybe the rain holds off another day, maybe not but it would be nice if it did.   Yesterday ended up being quite nice, with a bunch of sun, but a bunch of clouds.  Mostly sunny, but a lot of activity in the sky.   No rain on me though.

Didn’t quite get done what I’d hoped.   Not a big surprise to anyone here, I think, at this point….

I did get the AC diagnosed and fixed.   Saved a service call and some money there.   Knowing how stuff works, and then looking for what changed is a valuable skill.  About $150 valuable to me yesterday.  Thank you for the reminders to check the overflow pan and the float valve.   My old system had that disconnected and flooded the bathroom, so it’s not something I’d have thought to check immediately.   Turned out to be a disconnected wire nut on the control line to the condenser unit.  Easily fixed.

I then left the house to mail my ebay sale, and do pickups.   Since we’ll be at the BOL all next week for Spring Break, I had to get all my pickups done, even the one that normally has up to two weeks leeway.   And because one of the sellers is near the Sugar Land Habitat reStore, I hit that for a quick look ’round before heading back to my neighborhood.

With some time left, I went to Costco.  Which was interesting on a number of levels.

Firstly, several of the things I buy all the time were out of stock.   Ham slices for sandwiches were completely AWOL.   Smoked almonds too.   There were a couple other things as well.   I mentioned last night that they had a cheaper cut of beef in the cooler than I’ve seen there before.  And there were some more changes to the store.   The perimeter aisle had been filled with just a few really bulky items.  Armchairs.   Alternating with the boxed armchairs to create a “look” which filled the racks, but didn’t quite mask the fact that they used to be full with a dozen different articles and now had only a few of one.

There were a couple of other places where they expanded one item to cover for a lack of others.   They took about half the computer/phone/apple area away and just left it empty.  No jewelry case right there either.  Took out half an aisle of pallet rack in the same area too.   I’d guess the TV display had fewer choices than I’ve ever seen as well, maybe even one whole aisle less.

The wine selection has changed quite a bit.   I’d say that about 3/4 of the display area was wines less than $12 a bottle, and there were pallets of wine in the $7-9 range too.   They have definitely shifted downmarket for wine in their stocking mix.

There were a few more choices for rice than my last visit, but they are at least 40-50% higher priced than 2 years ago.  That’s a big jump.

Some prices have been stable though.  Lamb from Down Under is about the same.  Maple syrup from Canada might even be a dollar cheaper than it was.   And smoked salmon is close to the same at $1/oz.   Now that spiral sliced ham is back in stock, it’s actually cheaper (counting inflation) than it was a couple of years ago.     Chicken drums were 1$/pound again too.   That might be people slaughtering early to sell before they get bird flu and have to be destroyed, pushing down the value.

All in all, Costco appears to be reducing SKU count (maybe involuntarily), has gaps in supply for long time staples, has moved product mix down market, offering new and more plentiful cheaper choices and seems to be making changes that DON’T point to a return to prosperity and an expanding economy.

Or I could be reading more into it than is there, but I think what I’m seeing is real.

Stack it up, if only to get through temporary supply issues.

Thur. Mar. 9, 2023 – the beatings will continue…

Warm and wet, possibility of rain.   We did get a few sprinkles yesterday, nothing that got stuff really wet though.  It was mostly nice, if humid.  More of the same would be ok too.

Did my pickup.  Did a drop off.   Have more to do today.

Might have found some tile at Habitat reStore for the bathroom floors at the BOL.  I will try to go by later today and buy a sample so that my wife can say ‘yea’ or ‘nay’.    And yes, I spelled that the other weigh but changed my mind… it’s possible she reads occasionally…

Short shrift today, as I had sleeping to do last night, and running around to do today.  We are supposed to get rain on Friday, which means I need to do the work at my storage unit today…

Juggling.   And running in place.   And falling behind.  Still, what did JerryP say?  “It’s a great life if you don’t falter…”.

Stack a few things.   Lots of people are finally waking up to the reality of the next years.   There isn’t a lot of slack in the system and it will get sucked up pretty quick.

Wed. Mar. 8, 2023 – moderation in all things, even moderation…

Warm and damp.   Got up into the 80s yesterday but never cleared up.   Threatened to rain, and indeed I saw rain in the clouds over various parts of town, but I never got any where I was.  Today should be similar but may have a better chance of clear sky.

Yesterday I took advantage of the ‘no rain’ state (hard to say ‘dry’ in Houston) and picked up a metal cabinet.   It’s your typical office tall cabinet with shelves inside.   It should be a good match for the one I already have at the BOL.    I would like the majority of my food to be behind the closed cabinet doors for a number of reasons, among them protection from depredation, visual tidiness in the garage, and not least, concealment from casual viewers.  Did I mention ‘keep the rats off it”?   ANYWAY…

Did my pickup.   Couldn’t do my drop off.   Will explore other avenues.  Would like to get a couple of bins together today and drop them off at the other auctioneer.  Nothing stopping me but me.

That’s the plan for today anyway, go through some stuff, drop off if I can.   Pick up what I can.

We’ll see…

stack it up…

Tues. Mar. 7, 2023 – pickups and drop offs… maybe.

Cool and damp, possibly overcast.  Maybe rain?  We’re right on the edge of the national forecast, so probably not, but no one really knows.   It stayed overcast most of yesterday, and got kinda warm in the afternoon.   I was a bit sweaty working outside.

And I did eventually work.   I had to clean up and move some stuff in the garage to make room for the hamfest stuff that was going back in there.   I pulled out some stuff I wanted for the BOL, and I threw out almost all the boxes I was keeping for ebay shipping.   I wasn’t using them and they take a lot of room.   A full pickup bed worth of room, as it turned out.  Re-stacking and moving some stuff to close up gaps got me some more space too.  All the hamfest stuff, and a couple of black and yellow bins went back in the garage.

One of the things I wanted to dig out is my drain camera.   Years ago I bought a drain camera to look under my concrete patio, and under my slab.  Still have the camera.   There is the mystery drain for the RV pad at the BOL that I want to snake and see where it goes… and the cam should do that no problem.   I have to find the display (or add a connector for an analog video display- like one of the portable flat TVs I have stacked.)   The display was some kind of Creative labs recorder with a built in screen, but all I really need is a way to see the composite video output.  There is a lesson in there.   The camera and snake were fine, but the proprietary display/recorder wasn’t made in enough quantity so when it went EOL, the drain cam did too.   IF the maker had provided a composite video connection, and let people use any old analog tv device, it would have had a longer life.  Standards people, use them.  And preppers, if you want the gear to last, make sure you can get stuff to work with it for a long time, especially standard stuff that is widely available.

It’s worth repeating, custom connectors and breakout cables are a point of failure.   Even if the companies are still around, the cable probably won’t be.  Remember all the custom and unique cables that pcmcia card devices used?   Those modem cards are landfill without the cable, but the ones with the x jack built in are still in service.  Ditto for the Dell dual head video card that needed a special Y cable.   You can still get a DVI cable.  Very hard to get that high density plug to 2 DVI cable splitter.  I get it  that the manufacturer doesn’t care if you still want to use the device, but YOU should care.  Power cords are an issue for everything.  Don’t buy devices with uncommon plugs or jacks.

I mentioned recently that I was able to find a new cutter for my manual meat grinder.   Widely used, simple design, durable, and industry standard.   100 years later, you can order a new part to fit.   Ditto for Mokapot coffee makers, the filter and sealing rings are easily available.   There is a good reason to buy what everyone else uses and not the thing with a unique aspect, that might not last.

Today I’ve got a steel cabinet to pick up, so I’ll combine trips and do other pickups too.    I’ll dump my pickup load of cardboard and trash.   I might even use the cardboard recycle dumpster at the school if I have time.    Then it’s off to the auction houses.  Besides my pickups, I’ve got an item for consignment at a house I haven’t used before.   They’ve been getting great money for it in past auctions, so since I’m going there anyway, I’ll try consigning it with them.   Hope it does well…

All the rest of you, stack it up, but stack things you can get parts for…

Mon. Mar. 6, 2023 – another work week begins

Cool to start, nice all day.   That’s my expectation.   We’ll see what happens but the weather liars are fairly sure it won’t rain…    Sunday was beautiful.   Really beautiful.  FINALLY we are getting some Spring weather.

Of course, a few years ago, I was wearing my cool vest to the Rodeo around this same time, and moaning about the heat.   It’s nice to have a long Spring here in Houston, when we can.

Spent the day (once I had stretched and loosened up enough to move) taking stuff back and putting it away.   I still have some stuff here at the house to re-stack.   I’d like to do some cleanup around the places I store it though.   And there are some things that need to be thrown out or scrapped.

I had to get rid of about 20 boxed potato side dishes that I had forgotten about.   They were in a tub, under the tarp in the driveway.   Water can condense in the tubs over time.   They weren’t moldy or showing signs of water damage, but they were old and the cheese sauces were undoubtedly past usability.  Mad Max rules, I’d have tried them, or at least tried to salvage the potatoes.  Not at this point though.   I expect spoilage and waste due to my really poor storage conditions.  I’m willing to tolerate it so that I have enough food on hand.

After returning the trailer, I totaled up my expenses for the hamfest.   $10 entry fee (which I could have skipped, as I never even picked up my ticket), $15 for 3 parking spaces at the swapmeet, and $54 for the trailer after taxes and fees.  I might have saved $20 if I was able to return it on Saturday afternoon, but $20 was cheap since it let me spend time talking with guys, and  hanging out for an extra couple of hours at the hamfest.   Including gas and a bottle of water, I grossed about $1000.  Don’t know what my net profit is, but I’ve got that money back in my safe instead of locked up in goods sitting in the tubs in the garage.  Sometimes getting your money back is the best you can do.

Today will be more cleaning and putting  away.   It’s long overdue, and while not ‘top of list’ it makes sense to do it while the stuff is out of place.  I may even take the time to scrap out some stuff for my next run to the junkman.

And with this weather I really need to make some decisions for the gardens here, and at the BOL.   I usually wait too long and have poor results.   I’m determined to get a jump on it this year.  If it’s not already too late.

Food security.   Worth putting some time and effort into it.

If you can’t garden, and I really can’t, you’d better stack it up…

Sun. Mar. 5, 2023 – sleeping in, if my back will let me

Another cool but damp day with clear skies would be nice.   Yesterday was gorgeous.   Sunny, breezy, temp was perfect after a chilly start…

I need to unload and re-stack the stuff that didn’t sell.  Some will not be returning to inventory.  Some will be going on ebay.   I sorted as I packed up, so it shouldn’t be too bad.

Wife and D2 will return from their back packing trip later in the day.

Hamfest was a lot of fun.   I like talking to people, running a line of patter, and selling stuff.  I don’t know what official ticket sales looked like but it felt a bit sparse.   The swapmeet area wasn’t well filled out either, which worked ok for those of us that were there.

Several people commented on the cost of living increasing a lot lately.

People were buying smalls for the most part.  I didn’t really see people buying new radios, or big ticket items.   Several people brought their young kids and there were some middle or high school kids too.  Ham radio is a ‘dad’s day out’ thing, even if most of the kids were girls.

Didn’t see as many people who looked like narco trafficantes this time.   That’s a plus.

My best sellers were rack shelves, load bearing vests (mesh tactical vests with molle attachment points) and pistol holsters.   The shelves were a no brainer, but the tactical and gun stuff sold better than I’d expected, and I’m glad I brought them, as the fact they sold means there was an audience for them.

All in all, it was a fun day for me, and most of the attendees seemed happy too.

I’m sore and beat up, with a bit of a sun burn, but I’ll live.

Today will be putting stuff away, returning the trailer, and  nursing sore muscles and skin.

Wherever you buy it, keep stacking!

Sat. Mar. 4, 2023 – join me at that Houston area Hamfest…

Cool and windy, but sun should be out and it should warm up later.   I’d be happy with a repeat of yesterday.  I think I might bring some sun screen, just in case.

I got my Dr appointment done.   Signage sucked, and I ended up being late, but I found it eventually.  Started by heading to storage and loading up the pickup.   One of the weirdest things I have is 9 spools of 12 gauge wire, 500ft.   I bought it for about $20/roll, and it is up to $109.   It is good for home-made antennas, as well as regular electrical wiring.  Even if I discount it for a fast sale, I’ll make good money on it.   I’ve got thousands of dollars of high end point to point 3.3ghz wireless networking too.   IDK if anyone will have the deep pockets, maybe a club… but it sure would be nice to move a couple of them.

I added zelle to my phone so I could get paid for the bigger items.   I’ve already got paypal, and the wife has venmo so I have some sort of way to receive that too.

I found almost everything.   Somewhere, there are a couple of bins of motorola radios that I just couldn’t find.   I found some just not the ones I was looking for.  Oh well.   Found some stuff I didn’t know I had too, so there is balance.

I REALLY REALLY don’t want to put all this stuff back away…

So come out to the Rosenburg Fairgrounds and check out the hamfest.  $15 entry at the door, and there are door prizes.   I’ll be in the parking lot swap meet area.  If you have been paying attention, you should be able to figure me out.

Go out into the world and stack some stuff.

Fri. Mar. 3, 2023 – busy day today

Cooler, and hopefully clear.  Rain is supposed to have passed us by in the night.  It was overcast, threatening rain, and we did get a bit of light misty drizzle in the evening yesterday.   By 11pm we were getting a little rain, but nothing like the straightline winds that were predicted.

The BOL got heavy wind and had power outages in the area.  No idea what really happened until we hear from the neighbors, or someone shares on the local FB group.

Did some errands a preparation for the Hamfest yesterday.  Most of the afternoon got eaten by a trip to the bank to deposit a check though.   The check was too big to use the self deposit feature in the app.   The nearest branch is 10 miles away, on a rainy day, around the time schools get out and people start going home… so normally  heavy traffic as well as weather related crashes.   Joy.

Since I was delayed anyway, I swung through a regular Goodwill store on my way home.   Stock was low, but I did find a book and a couple of DVDs.   I really went in for pants, but didn’t find anything I liked.   It happens that way sometimes.

Hit my storage unit on the way home for two table tops, two CB radios, and a bunch of antennas.  Today I’ll be piling up all the stuff I’m loading on the truck and trailer for the swapmeet.   Gotta pick up the trailer first, then hit another location, then back home to rearrange and load.   I better leave early and come home late… and NOT spend a bunch of time on the internet with my friends.

I’ve got a Dr appointment at 11, which will complicate all the other stuff.  Couldn’t get it earlier and get it out of the way.

There will be some ‘playing it by ear’ today.

The Hamfest swapmeet is a great example of the secondary economy.   There are people who make their living (or part of it anyway) by traveling from show to show and selling directly to the attendees.   For locals, it’s a great way to get a bargain on gear, meet LMIs, and avoid CC and paper trails, if that is something you worry about.

In any case, get out and buy something, then stack it up!

Thur. Mar. 2, 2023 – 03022023 -got a birthday coming up this month…

Same ol, same ol….   warm and humid, chance of rain, although we are on the edge of it, and it’s supposed to be clear for Friday and the weekend, so maybe it’ll blow out early.   Otherwise, high in the 80s low in the 70s.

Spent yesterday afternoon at my client’s house putting in a cell booster.   The tricky part is the cable run.   The house has a second floor but only in the middle and there isn’t a clear path from one end to the other.    I didn’t want the external antenna visible on the front of the house, and the room that needs the boost is near the front.   The equipment closet is near the back.   I am going to try using the coax that was installed originally for satellite tv to get the antenna signal to the room.   If I don’t have to figure out how to pull new cable all the way, I will save a bunch of time and work.  If you are building or doing a gut remodel, pull at least one coax and two cat 6 cables to every room that will get a tv.  If you have weird tray ceilings, or some other thing that won’t allow access to the walls from the attic, put a piece of conduit in.  Almost any signal can be carried over cat cable now, but pure RF still needs coax.

There is only one room with unusable cell signal, and that is the office… so we’re finally fixing it. (We have a pico cell that uses the internet, but until att finally got the fiber in, there was no way to make that work.  A straight up repeater is simpler, and doesn’t use third party paths…)

Today I’ll head back out there to do the rest of the install and then I’ll go home and pull more hamfest stuff.    That’s the plan anyway.

I did stop at the grocery store last night on my way home.   Beef was crazy high, and the only beef on sale was ‘value’ grade.   Chicken was cheap, maybe they’re all slaughtering before the birds get sick and flooding the market.   In any case, we are still only paying $4/ dozen large eggs.  Gas is around $3/gal at “normal” stations.   It is cheaper if you go to costco or go looking for bargains.   Big name stations might be 10c higher.

Stack-a while you can, monkey boy…
