Fri. Mar. 24, 2023 – waddayaknow…. it’s Friday again.

By on March 24th, 2023 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Probably clear, probably warm.   Certainly damp if not wet.   We are solidly in the ‘rain’ zone on the national map, but then we were for Thursday on Tuesday’s map and it didn’t happen that way.  Thursday was overcast, then sunny, then scattered rain… I got a few minutes of mist on my way home after a mostly nice day.  It was 77F at midnight.

Took my trash to the dumpster.   Did my pickup.   Failed to meet a friend for some thrifting.  Maybe today.   Went by the reStore to get a sample of the floor tile my wife thought might work for the bathrooms at the BOL, but they had sold out.   Gotta buy it when you see it.   Something else will come along.

I’m hoping to deliver another freezer, and get it out  of my storage unit.   That will make it easier to sort for upcoming auctions, and maybe finally let me condense one unit down into another.  One can always hope… and I think my buddy will take  a toilet off my hands.   That won’t make me as much money as I’d planned, but it will get the stuff out of storage.

Today I’ve got all my normal stuff, and I need to get loaded up for a weekend working at the BOL.   Girls have a scouting weekend, so I can get up there by myself and turn off the water for long enough to get my remaining plumbing done.   I think I’ll move a bunch of gas, propane, and food on this trip too.   I should have space in the truck as I don’t have any large stuff going up this trip.  Who knows what might change  though.

I better get moving on stuff, or I’ll end up sitting here most of the day.

Stack something, even just baby steps.

Deadly fungus? Watch “The Last of Us” on HBOMax. Oh, and yeah, hold the mushrooms on that burger.

I ain’t paying HBO any money.

The only episode I’ve seen of “The Last of Us” had too much “Groomer” going on, and I realized why the entertainment press is so positive on the series beyond the production team having been involved with “Chernobyl”.

The high water mark of Warner looking the other way is too recent. “10 is the new 16”.

Yes, I have several Apple products. I like them and the way they work together. I tried Android based phone one time. Never did like it. It was my first smart phone. That is why I switched to Apple. I have too much invested to switch.

I don’t like Google products as Google is all about harvesting data about people. Maybe Apple does the same and sells the data to Google. I don‘t know.

Use what a person likes and fits their needs. I can find no fault in any such decision.

And, before I forget, “Chernobyl” benefited greatly from the political antics of producer Greg Mazin, Rafael Edward’s freshman year roommate at Princeton, dumping on the Senator on Twitter starting in the 2016 campaign and continuing through 2018 and beyond.

The seeming popularity of “Cherynobyl” among lefties really puzzled me until I learned that bit of trivia. Sure, there are always the “no nukes” nutters, but not that many.

This is why the J6 “rioters” need to be pardoned:

The latest J6 conviction is really… something

In the end, Riley Williams was convicted of interfering with law enforcement officers, resisting or impeding law enforcement officers, disorderly conduct, and, of course, “parading.” (They’ve charged everyone from the riot with parading.) And for that, the now-23-year-old Williams was sent to prison for three years. This is happening while actual rioters in California and Oregon who smash the windows out of stores and steal as much as $1,000 worth of retail merchandise are given probation if they are even pursued at all. It’s one hell of a justice system we’ve got going here, isn’t it?

Three years. Plus waiting years for a ”trial”. I actually hate the current administration. This is not justice.

Ceding pop culture to the idiots was a mistake. Disney is currently being punished severely by the market for their stupidity,  but, whether The Mouse survives in its current form, it won’t matter long term since the indoctrination damage was done.

Re: wood pellets. Material used is  wood byproducts and trees unsuitable for lumber.

Truckloads of raw materials are brought to pellet mills every day and can arrive in many different forms. Some of the raw material may be sawdust, wood chips, lumber mill scrap, and even full trees unsuitable for lumber. The raw materials may be green, or freshly cut, may be partial dry or even kiln dried. By processing these raw material all in the same way, the end product has consistent moisture content, heat value, ash content, and burn characteristics.

    See here

    And… (here)

Wood pellets are the most common type of pellet fuel and are generally made from compacted sawdust[3] and related industrial wastes from the milling of lumber, manufacture of wood products and furniture, and construction.[4] Other industrial waste sources include empty fruit bunches, palm kernel shells, coconut shells, and tree tops and branches discarded during logging operations.[5][6] So-called “black pellets” are made of biomass, refined to resemble hard coal and were developed to be used in existing coal-fired power plants.[7] Pellets are categorized by their heating value, moisture and ash content, and dimensions. They can be used as fuels for power generation, commercial or residential heating, and cooking.[8]

Here in WA (and in nearby states and CA), forests are ‘farmed’ for wood an d byproducts. A managed forest area is clear-cut, then replanted for a future harvest. I think it takes about 40 years to regrow a ‘farmed’ forest area.  During that period, the area is available for wildlife; the areas are generally not used for other purposes (possibly hunting areas, maybe).

Managed forests are all over the place here in the Olympic Peninsula (WA). You can also see it in many areas of OR, ID, etc.

  22. Ray Thompson says:

    I skipped the 14, so I need to reup to a 15

I skipped the 14 as I have a 13 PRO. I have no desire to go to the 15 as I see very little gain for my needs. I am also concerned about the eSim only feature of the 14 and the 15. I need a physical SIM slot for when I travel to Europe. The SIM is mailed to me, and installed when I land in Europe. I don’t know how I would do that with an eSIM.

If’n I was to be honest with myself, the iPhone 6 did everything I needed. Camera sucked on that model so that is a plus for the 13 PRO I have. Only reason I have upgraded was the batteries losing capacity, the desire (not need) for a better cameras, and more storage.

Future phone models are really struggling to find new features that attract buyers. Apple is trying colors, like blue (which I succumbed), purple and the newest color of yellow.

That effort to find new features seems to extend across all the phone manufacturers regardless of the OS involved. I really don’t need more speed as loading that app in 2.10 seconds as opposed to 2.15 seconds is not life changing. Better screen, maybe, what I have is plenty good enough. Higher refresh rate, nah, I don’t play games on the phones.

New video capabilities, portrait capabilities, etc. are nice but not something that I use. And while on the subject why do people do videos holding the phone in portrait mode? Is their TV at home also in portrait mode? Do these people not realize that a better mode is to hold in landscape mode as it is much better viewing?

I also do not understand “selfies”. Why is the image reversed left to right? Shouldn’t there be an option to flip the image horizontally when taking a selfie? And don’t get me started on girls who take selfies in the bathroom mirror. Gaaaccckkkk, grow up.

  23. RickH says:

Why is the image reversed left to right? Shouldn’t there be an option to flip the image horizontally when taking a selfie?

There is. Most people aren’t smart enough to look for it.

SW WA State has a lot of managed forests inside a triangle connecting Longview, Long Beach, and Chehalis. The Ocean Spray cranberry bogs along the coast are more interesting since the managed forests tend to be sterile.

The selling of mom’s house seems to be speeding up.  The title company was wanting me to have two witnesses at closing to sign they knew my dad.  Dude has been dead almost 13 years.  Oh.  And they want us all to be at the title company’s office for closing.  Yeah, No.  It’s a 6 hour drive one way if you speed and don’t stop at all for a pee break.

I got grumpy this morning.  Asked them why do I need two witnesses to say they know dad?  How does that work if I’m selling 10 years from now and I have only one witness still alive?  After sending dad’s will, his death cert, mom’s will, mom’s “Warranty Deed with Enhanced Life Estate” where she gave me the house, and her death cert plus then I found the original Warranty Deed, what else do I have to do?

    Crickets.

The real estate dude texted me that the title company “are here to help”.  I refrained from saying it seems like I’m dealing with tech support people in India or the Philippines just going down their check list.

Anyway.  My grumpy e-mail seems have been pushed up the ladder and we don’t need witnesses anymore. Other than someone completing a form or two on their side, the place can close on Monday or Tuesday.   Yeah.  Rio Grands Valley….. mañana is a real thing.

Well, I finally gave in to the hype and fired up a ChatGPT session.

I’m edging around questions involving Texas Medial Malpractice lawsuits.

ChatGPT, which supposedly has passed the bar exam, says that Emergency Use Authorizations do not fall under “Standard of Care”. That may give me the opening I need to sue the hospital and the MD CEO for mandating the “vaccine”.  Also, of course, for prescribing me to take it without examining me first.  And threatening my job (and actually taking it) if I don’t.  Plus, I think I can include the HR execs for practicing medicine without a license by drafting and implementing the policy.

I have actual damages, plus pain and suffering (limited in Texas), due to using my informed consent to say “no” to this physician.   I could easily have worked 7 or 8 more years (there’s precedent; I know a 75 year old surgical nurse), so there’s salary, benefits, insurance, bonuses…

I’m shopping for an attorney but I’m wondering about pursuing it pro se.  That would give me a pretty good David & Goliath story.  Next week I’ll finally start making calls.  I believe I have to file before two years have passed.

Also, the Broward Sheriff is still Tony Gregory, whom DeSantis appointed to the job three days into his first term after campaigning on a promise to fire the previous Sheriff, Scott Israel, citing the Parkland and Fort Lauderdale shooting incidents. Gregory won reelection on his own last year.

Elections have consequences, and it is unlikely the known meth head and Benny Crump crony Andrew Gillum would have removed Israel if the 2018 election for Governor had turned out differently.

The Ford charger does not like extension cords. My neighbor with the Mach-e “GT” (really?) knocked a big hole in the side of his garage to run a 240 V outlet outside to a point within range of the charger’s DC line connected to the vehicle, which he keeps parked outdoors.

I don’t think he is worried about fires as much as he is about having to … gasp! … clean out the garage.

Book number one of a three book teenage series.  I read the well printed and well bound MMPB published by Clarion Books in 2007 that I stole from my daughter.  She left the book on the breakfast table and I picked it up, read the first chapter, sat down and finished the book.  I bought the second and third books for her and read those also.

D.J. (Darlene Joyce) Schwenk lives in Wisconsin on a 32 heifer milk farm.  She is fifteen, in tenth grade, and is six foot tall.  And stocky.  Her dad broke his hip and her older brothers are at colleges with their scholarships playing football so that leaves D.J. to milk the cows at 4 am and 4 pm every day.  Her mom teaches sixth grade at the elementary school.

D.J.’s father’s best friend is the football coach in the bigger town down the way.  He sends his lazy quarterback Brian over to help D.J. with the farm for the summer.  D.J. and Brian end up working on football skills also during the summer after finishing the farm jobs.  And then D.J. goes out for her school’s football team and makes starting linebacker.

My rating:  4.4 out of 5 stars (I could be talked into 5 stars)
Amazon rating:  4.4 out of 5 stars (272 reviews)

I highly recommend this book and series for any one with teenage daughters.

Get rid of the dog and tell the family that he ran out, wouldn’t come when you called, and got run over by a car. There’ll be wailing but maybe there’ll be learning for next pet.

This is what you do with your $100,000 model S.

@lpdbw, just checking if you had seen my late post yesterday on cell phones:

    Saw it.  Thanks.  Digesting.

    This dude is bold !

His 10kw generator did not provide enough power so he is putting in a 30 ??? kw turbo diesel now.

He needs a 1,750 kw CAT generator.

Did you mean “AC”? DC is Level 3 charging, which I’d be surprised if your neighbor had.

Standard-looking Ford charger from the street. The hole in the wall is just long enough that the cable reaches the plug.

    “220, 221 … Whatever it takes.”

In Florida, the Colonel Bat Guano neighbors had a custom conversion Prius plugin hybrid which involved a charging system requiring a $60,000 upgrade to their electrical service if neighborhood gossip was correct. I assume that was Level 3, but nothing on that car was standard since it predated Toyota offering plug-in capability.

Overruled by the dog no less.

Future phone models are really struggling to find new features that attract buyers.

I am hoping my next phone will be the next version of the Samsung  Galaxy Z Fold series. The current one seems to work pretty well, but most apps don’t yet support the large screen. I really want a bigger screen in my pocket. It’s about time.

I saw one of those folding screen phones at my engineering conference back in Feb.  It was awesome.

There’s a Pixel version in the works, but Samsung appears to be the leader in this segment. These are quite pricey though.

Yup, but my phone is my only splurge. Except for a few other things… Aw, shucks, you got me too: it IS about my needs xxxxx desires.

I’d guess the current iPhone has a similar configuration.

No physical SIM slot. I may be stuck on the iPhone 13 for a long time. If I upgrade I would keep the 13 for Europe travels.

Gotta quit posting late. I spent the last of daylight hours dealing with the last of the ice storm damage in my front yard.

Keep EOL-ed iPhones off of public WiFi. Cellular data only, and, even then, be wary.

Unlike Android, the only option on an iPhone for a browser engine, even in the “Firefox” and “Chrome” apps, is Safari, and Apple has made some boneheaded mistakes with regard to security.

Is Frost TBTF? Or is the total account within FDIC limits?

Frost is pretty big.  I’m  well under the FDIC limits.  Darn it,.

    @ JimB:

I also like and use Samsung phones.  Some Saturday this summer my daughter, SIL and I will be in Lone Pine and will have a few in Jake’s Saloon.  Perhaps we can get together and discuss things.  EdH and dkreck also welcome.  I’ll post date when we decide which  day.
