Tues. Dec. 13, 2022 – finally got to my storage unit

By on December 13th, 2022 in decline and fall, personal

Wet and cool, hopefully not actually raining.  Yesterday changed to misty drizzle just about the time I got half the stuff out of my storage unit.

That was my big goal for the day, get some stuff organized, and shelves built, and find some stuff for the next auction drop off.  So despite the overcast, I got started.  And got rained on.  Well, misted on.  I got most of it back inside just before the actual rain started.  I did find some stuff I’d forgotten about, and some  stuff for the BOL.

Today I’m hoping to go back over to storage, take some stuff over there, and take some stuff to my auctioneer.  If it’s wet, I’d still like to take what I’ve got to the auction.  If it’s crazy wet, I’ve got stuff to do here.  There is always stuff to do.  I can do a couple of pickups too, even if it’s raining.

Something will probably mess up my plans…

Because that’s the way it works.   But I’ll still be stacking.   Join me, won’t you?

Well, that’s it, then. To the reeducation camp with you. You can’t be allowed to go against the orthodoxy like that.

  2. Greg Norton says:

Good then that Abbott’s already reelected.

Texas has gotten more conservative in the last couple of years as more conservatives have moved here from the blue states.  So I think Abbott was safe regardless.  Abbott beat Bozo 55% to 44%, not quite a stomping but better than I expected.

The Dems haven’t run a serious candidate for Governor against Abbott in three tries.

Right now, the utility companies need to keep the lights on until they get their bailout from the Texas Legislature this Spring.

The insurance companies know what’s coming with the next February 2021-type freeze. Investigating my recent homeowners policy back door cancellation, the problem came down to the agency in Dallas and carrier in … Tennessee … not picking up the phone when the mortgage company called for renewal information.

72F and saturated again.   No actual rain at the moment.   Bacon is cooked, get out of bed announcements have been made, no movement though.   People that aren’t me better get their butts moving.

Kept my feet dry and I could work longer.

One trick I used while on the ranch in southern Oregon was to wear panty hose. It would rain a lot, not a downpour, just a constant drizzle, where I lived during the winter months. It was still necessary to get out and do work. Being wet was a constant problem. Rain coat for the torso but rain pants were miserable so not used. Sitting on a tractor was even worse on the legs.

The panty hose provided a very small separation from the wet clothes and the skin. They also trapped a thin layer of air which helped with insulation. Of course, I could never admit wearing such to anyone in school.

The only difficult part was having to pee. The panty hose was not designed for men and taking a leak in the cold required some exposure of sensitive body parts to the elements. An occasional moon in the middle of the day was not uncommon.

Families turn to expired food to beat sky-high inflation – with lines at one discount grocery store out the door as struggling shoppers flock to cash in on ‘stupid’ prices

    • Shoppers struggling to cope with soaring food prices are flocking to discount stores and snapping up expired or near-to expired foods
    • Food at home prices jumped by 12 percent in November compared to the same month in 2021, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics
    • The price of eggs shot up a whopping 49.1 percent, while canned fruit and vegetables saw an 18.4 percent increase
    • Consumers eager to pinch pennies are also turning to mobile phone apps and discount websites to find bargains

I guess it’s a good thing that the Bidden White House says inflation is over.   Wouldn’t want people going hungry.

  9. nick flandrey says:

Seriously though, I’ve been saying this for years… as have others in the prepping community.   I routinely eat food WELL past the date and I usually share if I find something that isn’t ok to provide a data point.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture: ‘If the date passes during home storage, a product should still be safe and wholesome if handled properly until the time spoilage is evident.’

The site adds: ‘To reduce food waste, it is important that consumers understand that the dates applied to food are for quality and not for safety.’

ReFED, a nonprofit organization, estimates that about 35 percent of the 229 million tons of food available is wasted annually by consumers.

The reason is often the ‘best by’ and ‘sell by’ dates on packages. Many people interpret that to mean food is no good after the appointed date.

In fact, ‘best by’ and ‘sell by’ dates typically mark a product’s peak freshness. That is, once the date passes, the food isn’t spoiled. It’s just not as fresh.

the last line in the article has this, apropos to earlier discussion here.

Polling from KFF, The Wall Street Journal, NBC News and others show that inflation and gas prices were important to voters in the upcoming midterms, which will determine which party controls Congress.

Gun violence, abortion access and prescription drug costs were also top concerns.

    – I can’t actually remember a time when there wasn’t someone banging a drum about prescription drug costs, and I wonder if the “gun violence” question should have been phrased as concern about lawlessness and personal safety rather than a democrat talking point.

Musk Disbands Twitter ‘Trust & Safety’ Council After Inaction On Child Porn

    by Tyler Durden

    Tuesday, Dec 13, 2022 – 08:05 AM

Twitter has dissolved its Trust and Safety council after new owner Elon Musk criticized the group over a longstanding lack of action to rid the platform of child sexual abuse material.

three members of the council resigned in protest over allegations of increased hate speech on the platform on Dec. 8, Musk declared on Dec. 10 that it was “a crime that they refused to take action on child exploitation for years!”

Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey replied to Musk, saying: “This is false.”

“No, it is not,” Musk replied, adding: “When Ella Irwin, who now runs Trust & Safety, joined Twitter earlier this year, almost no one was working on child safety.”

    Laura Loomer

This is the former head of Twitter Trust and Safety who made the decision to ban President Trump. Yoel Roth made a career out of telling all of us we are “hateful” & shouldn’t have a voice while he openly fantasizes on Twitter about murdering children. Sick stuff @elonmusk.

    Yoel Roth

    @yoyoel

Do you think the front desk attendant at the Admirals Club will euthanize the squalling children near me if I ask politely?

Ah, right, the suit in question is ‘the ghey’.   Terrified of children and religion, because he knows what his lifestyle is really about.   Probably has used the derogatory “breeders” to refer to normal people too.

Interesting couple of sentences in the article about tracking slurs, placing advertising, and amplifying tweets….

The dumbrocrats have nobody on the bench.   That is why they are desperately running Bozo against anybody. Bozo IS their serious candidate.

The utility companies got their bailout last year after the big freeze.  The Texas Railroad Commission sold billions in bonds and gave the proceeds to the natural gas utilities.  The electric meter guys all got to raise their T&D (transmission and distribution) charge by 25% to 40%.

My insurance agent called me Friday and told me to get ready.  Last year’s insurance bill on the commercial office property was over $9,000.  He told me that this years bill is going over $10,000.

Managed to spend $91, some on Christmas gifts but $20 on media, and $40 on shoes for resale.  I will almost always pick up Allen Edmonds shoes unless they are more than $20 (and not a desirable style) or really trashed.   Given their initial cost, few pairs are trashed, but sometimes they have had very poor quality work done to them.  The two pairs I got today are in great condition.  I also picked up a pair of designer women’s slippers that should resell for $100.  I don’t usually buy women’s shoes but they were in the men’s area, caught my eye, and when I looked them up, they were definitely worth a chance.  Once you get used to looking for it, you can usually spot quality.

The store was definitely understocked though.   Don’t know if they couldn’t keep up with demand from all the new resellers, are having staffing issues, or aren’t getting the merch.   There seemed to be plenty of employees in the store, and when I was there, it wasn’t swarming with resellers…

People keeping their stuff longer, or trying to sell it themselves is a sign of hard economic times.  If donations really drop off, I’ll take that as a very bad sign.
