Sun. Nov. 6, 2022 – Fall back. Now you get the hour the gubment stole from you back…

By on November 6th, 2022 in culture, decline and fall, lakehouse

Cool and damp at the BOL.  It was sunny and very nice when I arrived before evening yesterday.  The night was bright with the almost full moon, and a fire on the dock was very cheering.

Got some stuff done, see yesterday’s comments for details if your interested.

Got stuff to do today.  The vapor barrier needs to be applied this visit so my wife can get the flooring back down next visit.  We are going to have Thanksgiving up here, so some work needs to be done before then.

And apparently I’m just the guy to do it!

It’s ok.   I brought some more food up and the new freezer, so I’m continuing to stack here.   We could bug out to here now and be OK for a while.  That is a Good Thing ™ when world powers seem to be just fine with the idea of using nukes on top of the ongoing economic dumpster fire.

If you don’t have somewhere to go to, try to find someone to go to.  A mutual ‘swap’ pact where either of you can head to the other if things get out of hand locally might be your best bet.  Make sure you can bring some resources with you, skills and knowledge if not stacked goods.  That will ease an already awkward and tense situation.  Food is always welcome.

Having it on hand, or having it to bring with you is a good reason to stack more.  If you needed a reason….

If Biden is dumb enough to escalate to nuclear weapons over Ukraine, the exchange will not be “limited”.

    Humanity will be done.

Crap.  I forgot to do the fall back thing.  And I needed that hour.  I read until 130 am.  And I kept on waking up with the feeling that the wife and I had snuck into a warehouse for the night.  I finally turned on my light about 4 am to prove to myself that I was in my bedroom.  I hate it when I weird myself out.

It is 626 am and 62 F here on the southern coast of the USA.  And that idiot Biden has two boomers openly cruising the med.  Really?  That is antagonizing the situation by telling Putin that he can be nuked in 7 minutes.

I too read far too late and needed the “extra ” hour.

Currently have two pods worth of Cafe’ Bustelo Columbian, 3 splenda packets, and 3 oz of heavy cream in my oversized cup.  Normally I’d have Lavazza Oro supremo while up here.   I scored several cans for $5 ea in an auction.   It’s espresso grind but I still use a packed ¼ cup with 2 cups water.  My normal grind at home I use ⅓ cup but that was WAY too much of the Oro….

Two eggs over medium, toast, and bacon will round out my morning.   I normally only have one egg and skip the  toast or only have one slice, but I want to work thru lunch.

2024 has begun. Trump was in Florida taking shots at DeSanctimonious this weekend. Plus, someone passed DeSantis’ wedding pictures from Disney World to Axel Springer Deep State Media.

Though, if Axel Springer was trying to make DeSantis look bad publishing the pics, I think the attempt backfired. Nice couple, and, look, real medals … unlike Beau’s … who didn’t die in Iraq.

How about, not at all? Let it sink. Let Disney sink.

Blacks should not have been allowed to see The Northman (an OK movie, well done but nothing special except for the way it ignored modern PC, and the protagonist was dumb as a brick). We all know how delicate and thin-skinned they are, and two hours of movie without any blacks would have triggered them something awful.

If a couple blue checkers can provides the goods on such a scam, it is going to require extra butter on the popcorn.

I doubt the imputed motivation is a few additional bucks a month, rather, simply that their investment in perceived gravitas is going to be severely diluted.

Well that took a while but the baseboards are all off, the bottom 2 inches of paneling is cut away to allow air into the stud bays, and I’ve vacuumed the dust and debris.

There is evidence of past water in the exterior wall, under and around the window.    There is small patch of black mold behind the baseboard, and in the paneling on the bathroom wall.  I’ve cut that out and sprayed with mold killer.  I think that is the most likely source of the smell, but I’m going to seal the hairline cracks in the slab and apply the vapor barrier anyway.   At $350 a can it’s not cheap  insurance but it should be  worth it to avoid taking the floor up again if the problem should persist because I didn’t do the work.    If after all this it still smells in there, we’ll gut the room, starting with the exterior wall.

I am using a hepa vac, and wearing an N95 mask.

Not interested. Not because the hero is black (and has been since he originally appeared in 1966), but simply because the genre has been turned to crap by woke crap.

If graffiti criminals can somehow gain “rights” to property by unauthorized painting of murals, it would seem that superhero creator’s estates could make an argument that artist’s rights were being violated by tampering with the fundamental foundations of the characters as they were imagined and became popular.

Remaking a literary character into something different, particularly for the purpose of spewing a “woke” viewpoint, is tantamount to theft and fraud. Let them write it from scratch, not steal the name and make it something else.

CGI has ruled movies for decades, making this the pot-metal age of superheroes, and most of it has been spiked to ensure the early onset of metal rot. The flip side is that other genres are simply not making it to the large screen. There are at least half a dozen hugely popular detective book series that would seem to be naturals for movies, but it simply isn’t happening. Couldit  be that the current generation of actors is simply incapable of carrying a plot without the heavy lifting being done by spaceships and aliens?

Big windstorm here in the Olympic Peninusula (WA) on Friday night, as forecasted. Winds from west coming straight down the Strait, 20-30mph with gusts to 45.

So, power outage Friday night  around 10pm. The usual trees across power lines, snapping poles. Happens each year during the first major wind storm.

Difference this time was that the wind took out several major transmission lines. Power was out in most of the area, close to 19,000 customers – about 95% of the houses. Also took out the T-Mobile towers.

Result – no power here at the house Friday night; finally restored in my area Sunday about 930am. No internent, but also no cell service, so couldn’t check power restoration status via the utility’s FB page.

I knew that the storm was coming, so on Wed had fired up the generator for a bit, and filled up it’s tank. Had about 7 gallons of gas in reserve. Also had my FLASHLIGHTs and LED lanterns at the ready.

Spent the first night (Fri) without running the generator. Past experience showed that the local utility would usually have power restored within about 6 hours, and since it was late, decided to wait until morning. Morning (Sat) came, and still no joy, so fired up and connected the generator.

I have a a bypass panel for the generator hookup, so was able to power the essentials here – freezer, lights, oxygen machine (for wife), and DirecTV/Sony LED. No power to the fridge – I think that I missed that circuit when I put in the bypass panel. An extension cord took care of that.

Had to refill the generator gas twice (once Sat afternoon, and once at 130am this morning). Power still not restored, and sort of incommunicado with no cell service to check status. Figured that power would be restored by Sat night, but no joy.

House cold (got down to about 56F, with outside temps to 38-42F, but clothing layers and blankets worked.  Along with an electric space heater in the den (that room is on generator power). Woke up this morning – still no power restored, so grabbed the two 5 gallon gas cans and headed across the bridge to the gas station to fill up. On the trip over, got cell service again, so must have been just one area tower that wasn’t working at home.

By the time I got home, power was restored. Transferred back to ‘shore’ power, turned off generator. Will treat the new gas with marine Stabil, and get into recovery mode.  Generator worked well; load during use was about 2.8K (for the 5.5-6K generator).

I expect there will be a couple more outages this winter; that is the usual pattern. Outages are usually short (under 6 hours) – we live in a semi-dense residential area, so have a higher priority for repairs as opposed to the more rural areas around here (which have still not been fixed).  House is slowly warming up – now at 60F (heat pump is slower to warm the entire house).

But the preps are working and ready for the next event: generator, 10 gal of gas, bypass panel for easy connections, FLASHLIGHTS and LED lanterns in place. Need to get the fridge on the bypass panel, but that’s a low priority. Will probably have an electrician do the work (although I did the bypass panel) as I want to install whole-house surge protectors in the panel, and that requires moving some breakers. I also might change the oil on the generator, as it was running for over 55 hours on this event.

And a hot shower might be nice.

  22. Ray Thompson says:

I have never been involved in a power outage of more than 8 hours here in TN. That was when a tornado came through about 300 yards away taking out some major poles with lots of magical boxes on those poles. One circuit on those poles served many businesses including a grocery store, gas stations, and a couple of eaterees. Also provided service through some other connections to a large chunk of the area. Circuit had priority for repairs, so the poles were replaced quite fast. Other than that, the next biggest power outage was two hours while electrical crews connected new overhead lines. Old copper coated steel wire which was brittle and prone to breaking. Old stuff was individual wires on the cross bar. The new stuff is aluminum in a triangle fashion closely grouped.

When I lived in Oregon the ranch lost power for a week as well as everyone further up the valley from us. We had an oil stove for heat with a cooking surface gravity feed fuel, fireplace for more heat, water was gravity feed. Camping lanterns using what was called white gas provided light along with some crappy flashlights compared to the stuff of today. Hot water was heated in pans on the heating stove. Slept under lots of blankets with a couple of cats and a dog for assistance. Survived quite nicely.

The reason the power went out was the major line that crossed our property broke one of the poles. Too much ice. The power company brought in a truck to replace the pole and line and got badly stuck. The power company had to bring a D7 bulldozer to get the truck unstuck. Left horrible ruts on the property which the power company had to fix come spring.

I cannot drag my taskbar on W11 version 22H2. I do use Start11 and Fences to organize things. Start11 allows customization of the taskbar and maybe that is stopping the relocation. Start11 will allow the relocation to the top. I highly recommend Start11 from Stardock software. Never had an issue with the software.

    Saw this, same storm?

Possibly. Wind started Friday evening (as forecasted), went through the night, but had stopped by early morning. By then, of course, the damage was done. Winds came directly west through the Strait.

Although we get these windy storms each year, this one happened to topple 100 foot trees into main transmission lines. Those are harder/longer  to fix, and cause widespread outages.

The drive to Poulsbo WA (about 25 minutes away) – lots of small pine limbs on the side of the roadway.  But no blockages on that route. The route into Port Townsend had lots of issues with downed trees and power lines. No power issues there that I could see; they had recovered from any outages.

Although I have a lot of small FLASHLIGHTS, the most useful is the large LED camping lantern. Uses 6 D cells, and has three light levels.  There are tons on the Big River; I think I got mine from Costco several years ago.

I drove through a similar very windy event in SLC about 12 years ago. Saw about 8 overturned trailers on my commute into SLC via I-15. Not much traffic; they closed the freeway just behind me. I did look overhead in the windiest section, and saw some debris twirling around above me.   Some high winds gusting to maybe 70mph coming out of the Farmington (UT; north of SLC) canyons. Winds come from the east from the high plains of Wyoming just east of there.

Nick – Re mold and smells
Consider an ozone machine, we successfully controlled mold and the oder in a Sunday school room following a significant roof leak some years ago and have used it in our home for smells and mold.  Not available everywhere anymore as it can be toxic to people and pets – but if used properly (set and left in any empty space, then aired out) it will do the job.  Used by motels and such following pet and smoking infractions.  I personally recommend removing rubber and similar items from the space as they can deteriorate from the ozone.  There are a few sources to choose from, we have the Pro-44 Commercial Ozone Generator from Jenesco Inc [jenesco.com].  Not cheap but it works and can last for years if cared for.

PRO-44 Commercial Ozone Generator High Ozone Output 20,000 MGPH (O²) 4000 mgph (air).
    $549.00

The PRO-44 ozone generator is designed with the professional AND homeowner in mind, covering up to 6000 square feet for odors and 1000 square feet for mold! Like our PRO-4, this ozone generator is for use in commercial applications or wherever high ozone output is needed to neutralize stubborn odors, or fight mold and mildew. This is the best choice to quickly sanitize and deodorize hotel or motel rooms and rental apartments that allow pets.

I searched around about how to move the taskbar to the top of the screen.  Uh, I don’t care enough to get into a Registry Key to delete “08” on the 3rd row of a key and then open Task Manager to restart Explorer. (Explorer is near the bottom of the list.  I looked.)

Other options prattle on about installing this or that to have a “classic” tool bar.  No.  I’m actually liking the new (compared to Win7) Start menu and taskbar.   I like the icons in the center of the taskbar.  [cough] Brand new 32″ monitor, you know?   Sure, it works the same way as in Win7 but Win11 is prettier.  Sue me.  Call me names.

I just want to put the Taskbar at the top of the screen.  Because menus drop down in every program.  Why is the Desktop different?

One thing Win11 seems to have “fixed” is a little thing.  XP got cranky about this and Win7, well. yeah, “where exactly is my stuff” was always a question.  You want your “My Documents” and Pictures and Music and Videos folders on your D:\\ drive?  As in not in your User\paul folder?  No problem.   Finally!

Anyway.  I just happened to right-click on the Start button.  Yikes.  Lots of Control Panel is there.  Cool.

    re spouses and prepping

The wife used to comment that it looks like we are camping but she stopped after the last 24 hour power down event before the generator.

My experience is that the spouse complains about the space taken up by the stuff and the money spent on it. Then, when there’s a power failure or a supply channel shortage, the complaints stop and there might be a comment about “it’s lucky we had these”. And then, after a period of time the shortness of which would be surprising to the non-cynical, the complaints start again. This isn’t only my personal marital experience, by the way. I saw it play out with other couples over the past few years.

How about a reason to not get a colonoscopy?   Housemate had one a couple of years ago and his short term memory is fried.  Long term, aka Before, is fine.  It’s kinda bizarre.   He’ll be on the phone, and being on the deaf side, talks loud and I hear (from the other end of the house) him tell folks stuff that is pure bullshit.  I think it is, maybe I have the memory problem.

Now, not remembering what we had for supper last night isn’t a big deal.  I sort of forget and I cooked it.  Wake up hungry in the middle of the night gurgling and wondering  “did I even eat supper?” is a thing.

So.  The neighbor got hearing aids because his wife insisted.  About three grand plus.  He hardly ever used them.  Being all He Man and stuff.  He caught some kind of cancer, like the “don’t feel good, go to the doctor” and died six months later.   All et up inside.  WTF.

Anyway.  She gave housemate the hearing aids.  He went and had his ears tested and the aids programed for him.

Left ear has been bugging him for a several months.  Go to the ear place and have them adjust the fit?  Yeah, too much trouble.  Let me change out the cone thing?  There are several sizes.  Nope.

So.  You know how sometimes when you pee you spatter a bit on the rim of the toilet?  Then you grab a few sheets of TP to wipe it clean?

He did that.  And just as he flushed his hearing aid fell out of his ear.  Buh bye.

    Yeah. events occur.

The crazy thing, this is all on the short term memory problem, today he went to put his hearing aids in.  Came and told me he’s missing his left ear unit.  Had totally forgotten about it being flushed.

Bad idea in my opinion. No big deal. The worst part of the procedure was drinking that gallon of stuff in the time span of two hours. The new stuff is much less to ingest and supposedly easier. Nothing can contain the joy of sitting on the porcelain throne for a couple of hours while the anus spews a constant stream of explosive discharge.

I have had two of them. The first was about 15 years ago. Cocktail of three drugs. One to knock me out obviously, a second I have no idea, third was amnesia. I have little memory of the event, especially dressing and leaving the building.

The second one was about five years ago I got the stuff that Michael Jackson used. Good stuff. I woke up feeling quite good with no memory of the procedure.

In both cases the process involves filling the lower intestine with nitrogen. Upon waking up I am told by the nurse it is OK to fart. It was a long, long, satisfying release of gas. Best part of the entire procedure. Next time I will try to play The Bridge on the River Kai theme song.

Anyway, contrary to popular opinion, we are not invincible. If modern medicine can stop something early, it is worth the procedure. Prostate cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer, are all quite treatable. Anything more serious and a decision must be made. In my case I would refuse radiation and chemotherapy. Let nature take its course, drugs to keep me comfortable. spend a lot of money on a trip to Europe, come home to get my affairs in order, transition to eventual hospice, and the final journey. I have lived a good life, no (well a few) regrets. Death is a part of life.

re bad smells in the house, if you have teenagers, kick them out and see if that helps.

We went through this.  Y’all come into the house through the garage, leave your shoes and socks in the garage and go through the laundry room to outside and wash your feet with the garden hose.

    It’s a boy thing.  Hormones.

I had about six months of it.  Clean socks, clean feet, new shoes?  Nah, stink big time.   Then it went away.

If you have the family history, get the colonoscopy.

I don’t have the history.  But I know what you mean.

It is still a good idea if your GP recommends one. If you need a name, I use Austin Gastro, Dr. Ziegler.

Yeah, I’ll second the recommendation on the Michael Jackson drug.

I just had a colonoscopy in February, and they found a golf-ball sized polyp which was six months from possible cancer along with a half dozen marble sized friends. I have a follow up scope in December to see if anything new developed from the spots where the big polyps were removed.

Buy right now then !  No telling when they will change the price back.

    >> I’m not going for a colonoscopy.  Someone has to keep it all together around here.

May take some searching but you can get scoped without sedation, just some Valium and your AirPods. But Propofol (the MJ stuff) is preferable.

Since Jeff’s minions are always listening, the sale will end in 5, 4, 3, 2…

Just finished watching Dark on Netflix. Incredibly dark time travel tv series with 26 episodes. Actions have consequences, or do they ? 4.5 out of 5 stars. Highly recommended.
