Fri. Oct. 7, 2022 – back and forth

Cool, damp, then sunny and hot.  Excellent weather.  Kinda dry though, lake is lower still.

Spent most of the morning messing around on small things while waiting for the foundation guy.   Then spent a while with him.  Eventually started knocking down a few smaller jobs.   Didn’t want to get into a big project, and it was too late in the day to get up in the attic.

But I did get a few things off the list, just not high priority things.  I like to have some small things to fill in around the bigger stuff.

Had my fire and drink while waiting for my family to get here.   They ended up getting here super late.  They had stuff to do before leaving town, I guess.   80M had a bunch of stations, 40 was crowded but mostly local (region 5) and there were a bunch of shortwave stations in the upper 9Mhz band.  SO much more activity than I hear in Houston.  I really like spinning the dial when I can hear so much.

Today I’m going to do a couple of clean up things, then head to Houston.  I’ve got ebay shipping to do, and a couple of auction items to pick up.  I’ll be very happy to have a high speed connection for a few hours.  Then my non-prepping hobby meeting Saturday morning, and back to the lake later in the day.

I’ll take some trash home with me, and bring a couple more things back up to stack up here.

Even if you don’t have a BOL, find somewhere offsite to stack some stuff.   Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket.   Stack some baskets!

Certainly not to you 🙂 I think it was said to Bill Clinton, more than once, and not by Cankles.

Subbing today, Spanish class. All I basically do is babysit as all their stuff is on Google classroom. Last day before fall break so I suspect the natives will be restless.

Football tonight. The school has a new LED down marker. I paid for the device. The scholarship I funded for last year fell through as the student changed directions. The money was still allocated so I thought I would do something nice for the football team.

I get paid $750.00 to $1200.00 a year by the annual staff for pictures. The annual cannot have a profit or carryover to the next year. The excess income is spent to buy cameras and accessories and also paid to myself. I try and return the money to the school in some way. In a roundabout way the money from the annual advertising sales gets spent on something for the football program, which the annual staff cannot legally do. Is that money laundering? It works, no one complains.

The revision to the core story line by the current showrunner casts doubt on William Hartnell being the first Doctor per canon, and the new story is that the Doctor started life as a small black girl.

There have been mediocre Doctors and companions, but the show survived. I’m not sure the fans will forgive the recent changes.

The Master’s incarnation as Missy was genius. The character was always a bit of a drag queen.

The USSR deployed those bad boys here and there in various proxy wars. There was some concern that they might be sent to somewhere I shall not name, for the proxy war there. We were advised (meaning that I was advised, as the newbie) that if various other choppers were seen we should consider shooting them down with the couple of anti-aircraft missiles we had (meaning, the missiles that the non-newbies had and were trained to use), equivalent to US Redeyes. But if we saw a Hind, we should hide, take cover, scatter, whatever. Only a very lucky shot would bring it down and the attempt would most likely just piss off the crew.

I just drove by the local elementary school, where they had a big sign up for “Boosterthon”, coming in November.

I sure hope that’s booster as in school spirit and not booster as in jabs. As if we needed another reason to clean house at the local school district leadership in the midterms.

The five ISD board members who voted to reinstate this trainwreck are all up for election. The two who voted against are not up until 2024. That makes things easy.

    >”Is that money laundering? It works, no one complains.”

The key difference compared to mob money laundering is that no steps involve illegal activity and that your part of the loop is entirely discretionary. Possibly they would stop giving you as much money if you stopped directing it back to the school, but that does not change the discretionary nature of they money they did pay. The fact that you don’t keep any of the money plus that fact that your services are worth what they pay you plus the lack of anything better to do with the money keep the transaction on the ethical side three times over.

edit: That is, your participation is entirely up to your own discretion.

When I stopped by the local Ford dealer to get a copy of the Exploder water pump invoice for the NHTSA complant we are going to file, I noticed that their inventory levels were up. I don’t know whether that is because the supply chain issues have abated for Ford or interest rates no longer allow the F&I people to put people into $50,000 trucks for $500/month, but I haven’t seen the lot that full in a long time. They even had a Maverick, but not the $19k version.

Looks like crocodile tears to me.  El Paso, TX has over 100,000 illegals in it right now.  If he wants results then go talk to Biden and tell him to reinstate the wait on the Mexican side for refugee status.

Went for my “old guy skin inspection” today. Figured that I need to start the yearly check at my age (70). I’m not outside much, so others may need to do that at an earlier age. A yearly inspection is a good idea.

Got rid of a few skin tags (easy process). Found one possible melanoma on my left (face) cheek. Biopsy taken, results next week. Other areas fine.

Dermatologist recommended I start wearing SPF-50 hats, and use sunscreen. Recommended the Coolibar site. They have larger size hats to fit my 24″ head, so I ordered one (free shipping for new customers). Another place the dermatologist recommended for sun protective clothing is Solibari

Those of you that work outside might want to consider wearing SPF-50 clothing and hats and sunscreen.

There’s a reason that outdoor workers wear long-sleeve shirts and wide-brim hats. Others here may want to consider same.

This story has gotten up my dander this morning and I went ahead and signed the petition.

First of all, I find the “a dog’s killing”” headline INFURIATINGLY reductive. The dog died, yes. More importantly, the only reason she did not also die is because of the dog. The man also attacked HER with a stick and has done so before. It really is just a matter of time before he kills a human.

If we want to play identity politics, which I would rather not, but if we are….then I find this piece completely sexist in its disregard for the safety of women in the park. I am so tired at the foibles of men being elevated to the same level as the safety of women. Having said that, I think that is a very narrow way of looking at absolutely anything. But if that is the lens you need to use, go back and read this paragraph. We all deserve safety. That is a basic right.

To me, it is very basic, We either have laws in this country, or we don’t. We either treat everyone under those laws, or we don’t. We can have a separate discussion about mental health in this country and indeed, we need one. We can talk about prison reform. What we don’t and can’t do is use those things as excuses to allow someone to attack others.

Even so, I think the point that gets lost is one of grace. We can feel sympathy for this disturbed but whatever caused his illness DOES NOT EXCUSE NOR JUSTIFY violently attacking people. How is this even a debate?

…ust the stuff that gives the right fodder for saying we are nuts.
