Hot and humid, more rain later. Although cooler in the morning and late afternoon than the hottest of days, it’s still getting hot in the early afternoon, especially when the sun is out. And someone in Houston is getting rained on every day.
As I drove around town yesterday, I was in and out of rain, and it rained at the house.
I spent the morning sorting and packing auction stuff. I had a bunch that hadn’t been sorted that I found when I moved some of the other…. Packed four bins worth and got it to the auctioneer in early afternoon. Then did a round of pickups and headed home. I’d have taken more on that trip, but that’s really all that fit in the Expy. Today I will pick up the Ranger pickup. The mechanic called and it’s ready. Lots more room for ‘stuff’ in the back, if the rain holds off.
The Ranger needed a bunch of work and I don’t have the total bill yet. If it’s under $1000 I’ll be happy. I haven’t spent much on maintenance over the years so it was due. There is still other stuff it needs too, like a windshield, and the insurance body work. I need it for a week though, so that will be put off again. It’s always something. At least with the two trucks I’ve had some backup, even if the usage is different.
Getting out in the world and talking to people can get you all sorts of information. You never know what you’ll hear, or how important it will end up being. Yesterday I got a bit about the presence of a respiratory virus in kids hospitalized with covid. A bit of confirmation when I got home, and it’s a real thing, although the magnitude and impact is yet to be determined. One practical bit, it gives us a really good reason to continue with masking our kids in indoor social settings. RSV is nasty enough, and if it opens you to bad covid, I’d just as soon skip it.
So today should be packing up and delivering more auction stuff. Followed by a second round if the rain holds off, or if not, then I have a couple more pickups-one needful thing, and a carpet “pet stain” cleaning machine.
While young Zeus is much better at going outside when he needs to, he still will soil the floor when he can. Spray cleaner and paper towel looks like it does the job, but I’d like a bit more cleaning, hence the machine. Our dog sitter has one and uses it multiple times per day.
Apropos of nothing, did you know that Black powder pistols and long arms are not considered to be firearms in the state of Texas and may be freely carried either open or concealed without permit or prejudice? And that there is a muzzle loader only season for deer? Or that there are very modern muzzleloading rifles, many available with scopes? Some things to look into…
Things happen slowly, then all at once. You can adjust the scale afterwards to figure out how slowly, or how long ‘all at once’ really was, but when you’re in it, I’m sure it feels pretty dang sudden. Even if you’ve been expecting it, when the reality hits you, I’m sure there is ‘that moment’. We’ve been in the ‘slowly’ part for 20 years. ‘Bout time for the ‘suddenly’ part. I’ll note in passing that several of the bloggers I read daily are emphasizing prepper themes all of a sudden. Medical, food, location, and defense being primary among them. It ain’t just me tellin’ ya… get crackin’ on yer stackin’!

What? RSV in hospitals? I’m Shocked! Shocked!
Start firing the guys with the mops because they won’t get vaccinated, and a lot worse is going to pop up among the patients in hospitals.
I’ve definitely noticed a shift in tactics to frightening mommies in the last week. The same woman with the nasal Berkeley accent keeps popping up on local Faux News advocating that Austin ISD defy the Governor with mask mandates.
I still believe the real target with all the media is the DC suburban voters. Early voting there starts in a month. I can hear the conversations in the breakfast nooks in Fairfax from here.
“You DON’T want to live like Texans. And you definitely DON’T want to be Florida Man.”
“Remember the incident with the man outside the Publix in Florida when you went to buy pool noodles for the kids while spending the week at Disney World? Do you recall what he said when you both were walking out of the store and you told him to put on his mask around your kids?”
“Florida is getting what they deserve. Texas too. They don’t have fine Governors like we do here in VA who put the safety of the children first.”
Never mind the Covid. Disney keeps finding ways to pack ’em in tighter and make more money at the same time.
Mickey says, “Don’t forget your mask, kids.”

I’ll bet the woman on the Faux News with the nasal Berkeley accent screeching for mask mandates in the schools took the kids to Eisney World or a beach in Texas or Florida this Summer … just like the rest of the country.
And off course UT Football will proceed with full capacity at the stadium in two weeks, just like the soccer games, gosh darn it.
And a full house at Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.
All right, all right, all right!
(He has an orange suit for the UT games and a green suit for Q2 stadium soccer. Green, like what everyone voting for him wants legalized if he’s elected Governor.)
Yeah, that is making it even tougher for me to get on board for one more trip before the boy is off to college. I’ll probably do it though.
On another travel note, I didn’t know that to re-enter the US, you have to show a negative COVID test, even if vaccinated. So illegals are welcomed with open arms yet tax paying citizens are shite on? Yeah, I know. But seriously, when will enough be enough?
@Lynn – TWC seems to be catching up. The appeal I filed at the end of October finally seems to be moving in their system.
It is probably still a good time to fire someone, though. I had to make a lot of noise to get things moving, and TWC has contractors answering the phones as well as their new ombudsman line.
RE: Clothes Washers
The matching sets and the stainless steel exteriors are amusing. The sets because the assumption is that if a manufacturer makes a great washer then that same manufacturer’s matching dryer must be as equally good? Don’t buy a dryer because it’s the best dryer for you. Buy it because it “matches” your washer. lol The stainless steel exteriors are nice when you are throwing a cocktail party and guests are mingling in the laundry room.

When I checked before our trip to South Texas for the 4th, a negative Covid test was required for anyone not holding a US passport or card at the land entry points on the border. Citizens were waived through but travel to Mexico was “discouraged”.
No, we did not go. I’m often accused of being careless regarding the virus, but the risks I take are very carefully calculated.
While at El Disco just inside the border one afternoon, I noticed that their delivery van took at least two trips south. I can’t imagine that the driver is subjecting to a twice daily Covid test, but who knows. That could get pricey, and the store wasn’t doing huge business beyond bits of kitchenware and garden statues from what I saw.
Nuevo Progresso has a lot of medical and dentistry tourism from the Rio Grande Valley and points north. People would complain, even be blatantly hypocritical, if that access required a test to return every trip.
I did see the illegal alien Motel6 and Whataburger gift card operation in action our first night. *Everyone* in the restaurant locked eyes on the door when the family walked into the building, not speaking a lick of English, in the middle of a tourist area an hour (winding) drive from the border.

When Number One Son buys a new house, he wants everything to be a statement. I have direct experience with the Chinese mindset, but I’m sure the thinking is similar in the H1B houses in the next development over.
I had to laugh in Seattle one night while visiting the “boss” uncle’s house. He had some high end import set featuring a front loading washer that they never used, swapped with their 25 year-old pair which resided at Number Two Son’s new house because Number Two Daughter-in-law from Korea, used to non-Chinese appliances, got tired of the washer not cleaning right and the dryer never getting dry.
25 year-old Kenmore actually worked. Imagine.
Real magnets will not stick to stainless steel.
The continuing policy of plugs (Obola 2.0) to put Americans last. All the crimmigrants flooding the FUSA will overwhelm ERs with COVID Omega Strain.
And many other types of diseases. Anyone from a turd world country probably carries multiple diseases. They will also be allowed to vote, multiple times if necessary, to keep people like Plugsy McSpongebrain in office.
Yeah, that is making it even tougher for me to get on board for one more trip before the boy is off to college. I’ll probably do it though.
Disney World in Florida isn’t even pretending to limit numbers anymore. Don’t buy the PR and go thinking that the crowds will be smaller and consist of the “bravest of the brave”, with an appropriate mindset.
The EPCOT monorail reopened yesterday because they can’t pretend that the bus system can handle the load anymore. Kids want to ride rides and see Mickey, but Mom and Dad need to get liquored up at World Showcase at the end of the day.

Speaking of truck brakes. I had a sense my brakes were dragging on my truck. Turns out the parking brake had failed and was dragging rear brakes. The entire assembly must be replaced as there is no adjustment. Rotors were ground beyond repair and must be replaced along with the pads. Almost $2K in repairs. Parts have to be ordered and will not be here until tomorrow, maybe. Ggggrrrrrrr.
Thanks to everyone who answered my clothes washer request. I am still researching this, but my wife took her usual more direct approach. She went to our local Home Depot and looked at the floor models. Home Depot is the only local source, because our Sooper-dooper Walmart elected to not carry major appliances, another long story. Other local sources have gone out of business for various reasons. We are used to all this. For comparison, I ordered a dish washer a year ago, and had it shipped all the way from New Jersey. That was “free” and painless. Home Depot will deliver for $25, saving me the trouble of picking it up at the store. They drop ship freight from a warehouse out of town, and it only takes a few days, not an issue for me, but an interesting point. It is looking like we will go with the wife’s choice, usually a wise decision.
Remember, I want a top loader only, and added that it must have an agitator, something I quickly learned reading a few reviews. My wife said all of them had very similar controls, which surprised me. She chose one particular model, and the store did their usual printout from their web site. The choice, which I am purposely not going to disclose yet, was among the lowest priced pair (women must have a matching dryer, and it does make sense in that our dryer is also old.) I looked the washer up, and was surprised to find many good reviews and comments. It might be the best choice for us. The washer has “electronic” controls, but simple knobs for the UI. The dryer is all electro-mechanical. Our present pair is all electronic, and that has not been an issue, but the UI is overly complex and confusing.
Now to Speed Queen. Thanks to drwilliams and Nightraker for the links, and Nick for his experience. That Wirecutter site is excellent, and I have used it before. The SQ factory tour article was most interesting. My take is that I might like to buy one of the older models. It reminds me of the Volvo (?) commercial where the pitchman says how good the 25 year old car is, and I think I would want to buy one of those rather than the new one. The newer SQ washers (top loaders only) seem to either not clean as well as the ones they replace, or might have reliability problems. No thanks, though the comments do seem to differ. One hidden gem is https://blog.yaleappliance.com/most-reliable-top-load-washers which does more than the typical “reliability” articles that simply add up the service calls and omit the reasons.
If that seemed a bit harsh on SQ, so be it. I purposely left out a lot of pertinent issues that have nothing to do with brands and types. One is that we are planning a major renovation, that will probably include a relocated laundry room and new appliances, so anything we buy now doesn’t have to last forever. It does have to be fuss free, which our present washer (details purposely omitted for brevity) is not.
More later. Right now, many things are tugging at my cape. Thanks again.
Miss the generally reliable brand.
We have 21 year-old Kenmore set which is rebadged Whirlpool. All electro-magnetic controls on the washer.
When we bought our Florida house, Sears was an automatic first stop for the appliances and lawn mower.
We don’t have the mower. Mowing 10,000 sq ft of St. Augustine every week burned through the self-propel drive on two 7 HP mowers in ten years.

Push button parking brake? I’m suspicious of those.
OTOH, the level of force I have to use to engage my Camry’s mechanical parking brake makes me wonder how long that system will hold up.
Yes, I’ve been to the dealer twice for adjustment.
No, pedal activated. Push to set, pull a knob to release. Started using the parking brake when pulling the trailer. Something broke I guess. The rear brakes are disc brakes and there is some mechanism to force the pads against the rotors. I suspect the release mechanism failed. Brakes were fine two months ago. Shirt(-r) happens I guess.
Something just did not feel right at times when stopping or starting motion. When braking after backing up sometimes there was an odd feel. I suspect having it looked at earlier would have made no difference as the damage was done.

We had a push button brake on our rental in Florida in March. The car wouldn’t move without pushing to disengage, but I don’t know if that was a physical mechanism or something the computer controlled.
I got all our appliances from Sears up to 2009. Our current fridge, a Kenmore (relabeled LG), is the last appliance I bought from there. It’s still going strong, although I had to replace the main board (60 bucks, and pretty easy) and the water dispenser has recently stopped working. It’s on my list to troubleshoot that – real soon now as JEP used to say.
I think that’s the other way. Kenmore was never a manufacturer and for years they were Whirlpool.
Speaking I’m trying to decide if I should sell mom’s five year old set of Whirlpool washer/elec dryer. Matched pair with very low usage bought from an independent dealer here. OTH I may just offer then with the house which I hope to have on the market real soon now. Same for the refrigerator, also Whirlpool.
I don’t need any of them. We have a set of Samsung. Top load impeller and gas dryer. I bought them two years old at half price. No complaints. Gave my sister the old set.
My ATS has a push button parking brake. So far it hasn’t given me any problems. I suspect the hill assist uses the same mechanism. Makes starting out on a hill with a stick shift trivial for even a novice.
My (limited) experience is that including washer/dryer with the house does not increase the sale price.
“Ron DeSantis Responds to Joe Biden and Rips Him Apart Over Afghanistan”
https://redstate.com/bonchie/2021/08/19/ron-desantis-responds-to-joe-biden-and-rips-him-apart-over-afghanistan-n429379
“Yesterday, Joe Biden gave the most surreal press conference of his presidency. As Afghanistan descended into further chaos and thousands of Americans remained in harm’s way, the president returned to the White House to give a minutes-long statement on COVID. Biden attacked Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, pledged retribution for anyone not forcing masks on children, and then just walked out. No questions were taken on the issue that was dominating not only the news but also his presidency. An existential crisis was simply ignored.
The absolute absurdity and dereliction of duty weren’t lost on DeSantis, who went on Fox News last night to respond.
As DeSantis notes, while showing obvious anger at the situation, Biden was inexplicably (or it’s completely explicable if you assume he’s got dementia) on vacation at Camp David while Afghanistan collapsed. Instead of rushing back to the White House as a normal president would, he remained there until late Tuesday evening. He then gave his ridiculous presser, not even mentioning the tragedy unfolding and taking no questions, and is now scheduled to head to Delaware for a long weekend. It’s insane, and it’s evidence that this president is not capable of executing the duties of his office.
But it’s not just Afghanistan. DeSantis went through the laundry list of crises that are facing this country right now largely because of Biden’s awful decision-making. The border has reached levels of anarchy not seen in modern history. Hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants are pouring across per month in the middle of the hot season, a time when things are supposed to slow down.”
Oh yeah, if you had any questions if DeSantis running for prez in 2024, here is your notice.
Hat tip to:

We sold our last three houses with the washer/dryer included. One because the washer was a front-loader we didn’t like. We left the master bed in the last house. Got a new power adjustable bed for the current house.
Current house came with a washer/dryer (older model, top loader, still works great) because the seller was moving to a retirement home and downsizing. We also arranged (at a slightly extra cost) to get her living room furniture, and the dining table/chairs/hutch. Older design – the house was about 20 years old, and she was the original owner, so probably the original furnishings. Just replaced the living room furniture with new LazyBoy recliners and couch. Also got the stereo equipment.
Selling the washer/dryer with the house means you don’t have to move it. And you get new stuff.

He lives in an area of lightning strikes (FL), and his precautions saved some of his equipment from a big strike near his house. Other items failed.
The diary entry is a ‘lessons learned’. One was that fiber isolation (via the network connection to his computer) saved that computer from damage. Thought you might find it interesting.

Push-button parking brakes? I always heard that system referred to as “emergency brake”. And it *is*
I was once driving along, and had a total brake failure. This isn’t supposed to happen, but it did. Total failure of the brake cylinder, including the wall between the separate chambers. In the middle of traffic, on a big road.
That cable-attached, lever activated emergency brake let me drive, get through traffic, and get safely off the road.
I’ll avoid the push-button brakes, thanks…
Costco was busy. The Charmin blue had been restocked and was down to one full pallet at noon. It was $5 off, limit two. It was flying off the floor. Ditto for bottled water, most people had at least a case, someone had about ten, no sale going on, just demand.
They have some christmas toys out. There is a LEGO baby yoda, and a 20″ squishamellow baby yoda. I grabbed both, as I expect them to sell out and the kids will squeee.
Truck was $1600. New pads and rotors in front, new control arms and ball joints in front, oil change, smog, and a/c work – dryer, relay, freon. Runs and drives like new. Brake pedal feels too high and hard compared to what I’m used to. Probably the new feel is what it should have been for years. Interesting conversation with my mechanic and his partners (auto dealership and some other investment thing, persian immigrants, lotta hustle.) More on that later.
Need to get some stuff loaded and delivered.

Dunno about Houston, but the weather people in Austin have been predicting a possible turn for Grace for five days. They will probably still predict a possible turn when the storm hits the center of the coast of Mexico on Saturday.
The media in Texas would love to have another 2017-style gas shortage on Labor Day Weekend in Austin/San Antonio.
I’ll avoid the push-button brakes, thanks…
Avoiding the push button parking brake is close to impossible in the US anymore.
The pull up emergency brake is definitely a thing of the past. Most cars will have the pedal if the manufacturer still provides an emergency brake.
The standard line is the mechanical systems mean extra weight, but I think that the real reason is that indulging the American gadget obsession lets the manufacturers cut corners without getting pushback.
What if… you had a large boat anchor chained to the car’s chassis and just tossed it out the window when your regular brakes weren’t working? Hmm… ⚓🚗💥
But what if I don’t want to drive around with my ex-wife in the car, just in case I need her?
Could you perhaps chain her to the chassis and throw her out a door in the event an emergency stop is needed? It’s worth testing… 😈
Those electric parking brakes are likely in anticipation of some sort of “safety” regulation, or to stave off lawsuits. Most people don’t use a parking brake. The only function it adds is that it locks both wheels instead of just the driveshaft, which can prevent movement on slippery surfaces.
I drove a car that had its (true) emergency brake inoperable for a few years. It was a simple fix, but I never got around to it. Junked that one, avoiding the need. When I hear the automatic parking brake apply when someone near me puts a newer vehicle in Park, I just cringe. I put it in the same category as having to step on the service brakes to get out of Park. I want to go, not stop. Stupid.
Added to my list that is headed by the car thief notifier (key in switch alarm.) I hear those things at gas stations, and am tempted to jump in and just take the car if it is better than the one I am driving. /sarc
Agreed, except for the “/sarc” at the end.

All of the new cars with “drive by wire” systems are now amenable to automation under a central authority if someone ever comes up with a viable system.
The push button parking brake system could also be used to immobilize your vehicle remotely.

The wife sold her rent house in Abilene, Texas yesterday. She expects it to close in a month as the buyer needs financing. The 3/1.5/1 house is a serious fixer-upper with foundation, wall, ceiling, bathroom damage. Her dad rented it out since 1978 and the same tenants lived in it for the last 20+ years. The tenants moved out at the end of January. She got an estimate of $30K after the foundation fix to bring it up to standard and decided to sell it as is. Sometimes it is just best to walk away.

Dr. Sostman: The CDC studied what happened when certain immunocompromised patients were given a third dose of an mRNA vaccine. The symptoms reported were consistent with previous doses and the intensity of the symptoms was mostly mild or moderate.
None of the transplant patients reported any serious adverse events after administration of the third dose, and no acute rejection episodes occurred. None of the patients on hemodialysis developed critical side effects requiring hospitalization.”

Linde will build, own and operate a two-megawatt electrolyzer plant at Infineon’s Villach site in Austria. The plant will produce green hydrogen using proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology from ITM Power, which Linde will then purify to meet the rigorous specifications needed in Infineon’s manufacturing process. The use of this high-purity green hydrogen is part of Infineon’s plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at their Villach site.”
Green hydrogen, blue hydrogen, it all wants to be free !
Green hydrogen = hydrogen produced by electrolyzing water with lots of electricity (expensive)
Blue hydrogen = hydrogen produced by reforming natural gas with steam (not expensive)

“There’s been a lot of yakking and babbling about “Who Lost Afghanistan?”. It’s all wrong. And it’s not because we “lost” Afghanistan. It’s because it never should have begun, as any sort of “nation-building”. Any idea of such is now manifestly and properly discredited as one of the Stupidest Things Ever Thunk. Allow us, therefore, to lay proper blame at the true and rightful owner’s feet:
The Raconteur Report takes pride in recognizing the monumental f***tardation of the man most single-handedly responsible for everything that’s gone wrong in US SWAsia policy for the last 20 years, by awarding him the Robert S. McNamara Award For Epic Stupidity By A Senior Official.”
There is a nice picture of Colon Powell.
And I agree. My son’s first sergeant tried for four hours to get him to “volunteer” for a three month mini tour in Afghanistan after his second trip to Iraq. My son wisely told him “No !”. They needed more Marines to replace the seven Marines killed and a bunch injured in a ambush in a valley by the Taliban. The first and last humvees were blown up and two Russian built .50 cal machine guns raked the convoy. Major screwup by the Marine commander, not a good man to go work for.
