Tues. Nov. 3, 2020 – going to get the whole family’s fangs scraped

Cool and clear.  Still damp though.  Should be a nice day.

Yesterday was nice.  A bit chilly, 45F at 6am, 49F by 7am, and warming throughout.

It was a bit cool in the shade when I was pressure washing.  Still, not freezing.

So I pressure washed the north side of the house.  What a difference to have the green and black off the siding and eves.  Did the driveway too.  Took in and put away some more decor.  That will continue for another day or two.

Kids have remote learning today.  Not sure why, they were scheduled to have the day completely off.  We’ll be headed to the dentist later, and OH, wife and I will be voting in person.

If you haven’t voted yet, and you are eligible, please do so.   Vote your conscience but consider the plans each of the candidates has for America.   If you seriously can’t pick, leave President blank and at least vote NO on all the incumbent judges.   If they’re well loved, it won’t hurt them, and if they should go, you’ll be helping.  For the other local positions, I hope you can make informed choices.  If you know nothing at all about them, the Republican party doesn’t want to go socialist, and the Democrat party does.  Vote on that basis.  Local matters and it’s where your vote DOES count.

Lots of predictions.   I’ll say that I think it will be Trump by a wide margin.  I’m basing that mostly on enthusiasm.  His base is fired up and WILL go to the polls.   Biden is the negative candidate, his base is reluctant, and might just say “F it” and stay home, or switch.  I hope I’m right, because I see dire changes to the US coming if the Dems take control.  They’ve TOLD us what they want, and it isn’t for you and I to live in peace and comfort.

Short term, keep your eyes open and your options open too.  Treat crowds like flood waters and ‘turn around, don’t drown.’    Take another route.  Try another time.  Give my druthers, I’d stay home today.  There are places that are going to explode tonight.  Stay away from them if you can.  If you can’t, WIN.

And remember that there are cameras everywhere.

Stay frosty.

Indeed – best wishes for peaceful election day, followed by a clear and undisputed result.

Our older pooch had some sort of problem today: collapsed, had some sort of twitching fit. Then stood up and shook it off, but seems wobblier than usual, and wanting extra pets and reassurance. At 17-1/2 for a mid-sized dog, we know his days are numbered, but this is the first seriously bad sign we’ve had.

Meeting with the building company today, to discuss the final bill for the house. Lots of little points to discuss, nothing too huge: 2% to 3% of the total costs of the house.

Also discussing the possibility of building a small annex for projects and guests. While we really like our open-plan house for the two of us, it may be a bit too open. There is literally no room that guests could sleep in, where they could close a door. Offering this second project should ease the discussion about the disputed charges.

  3. Nick Flandrey says:

@brad, good luck. I’ve done dozens of high dollar commercial installations and the punchlist always seems to be endless. At the end of the day, as long as you are not asking for something you didn’t contract for, you should expect the work to be complete, and to a high standard.

41F and clear this morning. Kids are sleeping late, as did I (15 whole minutes) because even though they have class, they don’t have transportation… so we get to save an hour in eldest’s case. That is the nicest thing for us as parents about remote learning- no leaving the house early for the bus or to drive them.

Given my habits and eyesight, I’m really glad to have the classics in a zoomable format, with a backlight, and weighing the same for one as 30…..

I love my Kindle, but am currently reading on an iPad Mini. Having a net connection for references really helps when reading manuals, etc. Plus with Apple Books, I have all my pdf and epubs available. I’m one of those people who need all their “digits” available like email and apps.

If I ever go on a cruise post Bat Cooties, I’ll have the Kindle to read in the oceanic light. Can’t beat e-ink.

The only think better that a tRump Electoral Landslide would be if he lost the *popular vote*. Imagine the ProgLibTurd heads exploding! “Quick, someone get Rachel Madcow a beer to cry in!” I also want Ted Cruz to push ending Twitter and FaceCrack conservative oppression. Putting them out of business would be good for the Nations kids (and adults).

That’s why I splurged something like $400 when the first Kindle came out! That, and hauling dead trees to India. It was quite the conversation starter at the time, too.

Of course Trump will lose the popular vote thanks to all the antics in California. It doesn’t matter, however.

Know what I DON’T see all over the place this year? I don’t see people wailing, angsting, and lamenting about picking the lessor of two evils, holding their nose to vote, debating the merits of voting, or similar things.

I don’t LIKE President Trump. He is so much better than the alternatives that there really isn’t any choice. Secretary Clinton and Vice President Biden are known, corrupt, quantities, and the Secretary was vindictive to boot (See the WH Travel Office scandal, for instance). Senator Harris is just so far from what I want in a Federal Government that I can’t even picture it. Ditto Senator Biden, Senator Warren, and Representative AOC.

Oh how far the leadership of our country has fallen.

I got a Kindle XL when it came out in anticipation of text books on it. What a dud! I think I still have it in a box somewhere. Or the trash during moves. My iPad Pro is great with text books. Full color to boot.

Try unloading the XL on EBay. I worked with a guy in Seattle who bought one of the last ones sold by Amazon, specifically for PDF handling.

(It is amazing what kind of tech people will seek out on EBay. Working Alphasmart devices still bring decent money, especially the later versions.)

Technical textbooks have never been great on Paperwhite Kindles, but the devices are the only way to go for Law, Literature, or other subjects with lots of citations from texts. When I took Forensics, highlights I made in the text while reading got shared with the Kindle Windows app via Whispernet, and everything was ready for cut-n-paste into assigned papers. With the backlight off, the e-ink devices have extremely long battery life.

I voted. Polls are open here from 8 AM to 8 PM. I had to wait in line about 30 minutes. Not too bad considering it was the morning “rush” at the polls. I think the worst ever was 2000 when I had to wait in line for like 90 minutes when voting after work. They’ve fixed a lot of things around here since then. Surprising to some people, if they don’t get enough volunteers to work the polls you can be drafted for election duty just like you’re drafted for jury duty.

Yah. My daughter didn’t care for the remote learning in the Spring, but she really liked the extra hour of sleep.

In topical news, I voted. Short wait (caused by the coincidence of the five people in front of me all living in the same ward and thus directed to the same person with a name book). Straight R choices, though only Pres and Congressional Representative contests were contested.

  13. DadCooks says:

Yeah, that one. The effort to search for it right now is too much. Like Mr. Lynn’s unopened boxes after his move.

–I’ve got a DX I’m willing to sell, and at one point I had a pallet of alphasmarts. I’ve got at least one NIB, and I’ve got the serial to IR link dongle too.

Got back from the dentist. We did a ‘health screener’ by text before arriving, then waited in our vehicle until they were ready for us. Once up in the office, all that was different was a one minute peroxide based mouthwash and then the exam and cleaning proceeded as normal.

I forgot my voting guide at home or I would have stopped on the way. The place I normally go was empty looking. My wife went to an alternate location this morning around 730 and was in and out.

I watched Rambo: Last Blood last night. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. I wonder what Stallone got to make/star in this piece of excrement.

Watched Labyrinth with our 8 year old daughter last night. Today she’s cracking up every time she gets us to do the ‘You remind me of the babe’ bit with her. Perfect age for that movie. Really fun watching her reactions to it, and to David Bowie.

Recovering from the windstorm. Dang I can’t believe we didn’t get badly injured, after seeing the state of the frame. Phew.

I bred two rabbits on 10/02/2020 (before moving was on our horizon). Today there were 7 kits and 1 stillborn. I’m using a technique called ‘shelving’, which simply means bring them to a warm environment for most of their day, and take them out to the doe twice a day to nurse. Doe’s do not ‘watch’ their kits, very hands off mothers. It is 10 Fahrenheit out there. The kits were warm this morning at 10 f, not the furnaces they were at 40 f though. It seems prudent to bring them out of that harsh cold. As I intend to breed through the winter and the temps will drop lower, this litter is something of a ‘learning litter’ for me. I expect to lose some, possibly all, of them while I work out my learning curve.

I have three young rabbits to slaughter. My slaughter tent was the greenhouse destroyed with the windstorm.

The automatic watering winter water system is working great. I adjusted the nipples again to reduce flow as I was getting stalagmites of ice where the nipples dripped. At 10 f the water is flowing freely and a small amount of ice has formed on the raw surfaces of the barrel and at the rim of the water. Not bad. That’s with the 250 watt heater.

The chickens are disgruntled. There’s going to be some frost bite for the unfortunate birds that have large wattles and combs. Other than ‘dubbing’ them as new hatched chicks, I haven’t found much I can do about that that doesn’t cause worse problems. It’s why I prefer Chanteclers, but barnyard mix was what I could get my hands on last Spring.

We may close as soon as 11/16. Had the plumbing inspection yesterday and will see a quote this week. Encouraging information from the plumber. Based off what he saw he thinks we will spend less than we had budgeted.

Politics. I just can’t. We will vote today and are prepped to hunker down in the coming weeks. Alaska has some pretty important races going. It’s a toss up whether money money money incessant advertising will win, or common sense will prevail.

Your daughter is about 10 years too young for the flick, but the craziest 80s David Bowie casting was Pontius Pilate in “The Last Temptation of Christ”.

–I think that about sums it up.

I think that the smaller rifle is more than a standard M16 with an aftermarket foregrip…

The mag well is too smooth, and the mag looks very square instead of rectangular. Something bigger and longer than 556 anyway. Don’t be fooled by the 60s era stock. It’s a flattop (no handle to match the stock), doesn’t have a forward assist, has very smooth upper. Really long barrel, and nothing at the end, no flashhider, nothing.

Compare it to the M4 the solo guy in the next picture is holding. It’s about twice as long….

    n

Yeah, the guys on https://gunfreezone.net/ are saying that it is a 7mm magnum. But former USMC son slept with an M16 for two years. Then he slept with an M4 for two years. And he says that it is a highly modified M16. I disagreed and said that the cartridge case is too big. He disagreed at that also.

    https://gunfreezone.net/its-gonna-be-lit-at-the-whitehouse/

Yeah, that third picture looks like an M4. I did not ask the son, he loved that weapon. Almost as much as he loved the M2.

    Voted.

No line at all, only one other person while I was there. It’s always sleepy at that polling place though.

They stopped me at the door and “asked if I’d mute my phone and not take it out” while voting. I said “my voting guide is on it” then she said “we’re asking people to write it down on this paper”. Um NO. “Sorry, I decline.” and then I checked in and voted. I had a sample ballot with me, for all the danged judges. One of our friends works in the courts, is a LMI, and she does a voter’s guide to the judges every season. Her emphasis is law and order, and work ethic. It’s a bi partisan list. I was shocked by the number of Dem judges running unopposed. at least 6 or 8 out of dozens. WTH Republicans? You can’t win a race you don’t enter. I left those blank.

I wore my mask and gloves. As I checked in they offered finger cots, sanitizer, and gave me an alcohol wipe and instructions to wipe the machine when I was done. Easy peasy, except for the no phones thing.

Disney is making a remake of Labyrinth. It will be a dud. David Bowie was a unique individual. And the songs in the movie are great. Along the Bog of Eternal Stench that Bowie kept on threatening to throw Hoggle into. And yes, fart jokes are always funny to guys and kids.

    Wow, you are moving FAST.

My new rule of thumb is to double all quotes for the actual spending in a house. I got a quote for replacing the dead water “softener” with a “Pro” unit. The base was $3,000 for just a polisher. I thought it was going to be $2,000. Adding a whole house filter and a backwashing charcoal filter cranked it to $6,000 (with a plastic shed also). But we definitely have a lot of impurities in our water (iron and calcium) plus chlorine since our subdivision wells have issues.

The Williamson County “Judge” is done in two years. Raging hypocrite about the lockdowns. The problem is that he is a Republican and likely to face a loon.

So, on our ballots it just says “Do you wish to retain Judge First Last?” (plus a mention of what court/jurisdiction they reside over) and you choose Yes or No. If they’re not retained a new one is appointed. Typically, they’re retained.

It’s mostly predicable. If people seem generally happy with the government the “don’t retain” votes hover at 1/4. If people seem pissed at the government the “don’t retain” push closer to 1/3. Generally, people have no damn clue how good a judge is or isn’t.

Every single judge, administrative or legal, in Texas is elected. Goes back to the corrupt carpetbaggers during Reconstruction after the Civil War I. We even elect our Governor and Lt. Governor separately. As a result, our Lt. Governor has real power in the state since they control the State Senate.

Drudge Report saw a 45% decline in web traffic for September as a result of turning against the President, according to new comScore data. Drudge had 1,291,000 unique visitors in September, which is down from 2,340,000 during the same month a year prior, according to The New York Post.

It is the ninth month in a row that Drudge has seen its traffic decline and, even worse for Drudge, it comes at a time when political news is in high demand as the nation heads into a major general election.

Not going to happen. Nancy Pelosi floating amendment 25 “to get rid of Trump” was merely a smoke screen for the real intention. Pelosi was setting the stage in case Biden gets elected. Her plan is to get rid of Biden and have her friend Harris take over the job of the president. Biden is no more than figure head, too much invested in him to toss. Easier to wait until after election to put forth the real plan. Kamala Harris would be a major disaster, the absolute worse president in the history of the planet.

Voting hours in AL are from 0700-1900. I drove by my local place around 0610 on my way to work this morning, and the parking lot was packed and a big line had already formed. There were reports of long lines all over.

I stopped on my way home to vote. It was by far the longest line to vote I’ve ever been in. It took me 23 minutes to get my ballot. It was a quick moving line though.

    @lynn
I about died during the bog scene. Somehow I’d forgotten all about it. I also had forgotten how they kept slaughtering Hoggle’s name. So many funny bits.

Rules of thumb for spending. A friend taught us his mother’s rule. Each letter of the thing is worth a hundred dollar bill. Fridge has six letters, so anything wrong is gonna cost a minimum of $600. Dog has three letters, you’ll never get out of the vet for $300. Old dog – You’re looking at $600 minimum for any vet visit. Old house – nothing there is going to cost less than $900. Mostly tongue in cheek but sometimes it comes eerily close.

Moving fast – from first walk through to closing about a month. We are putting 20% down and have excellent credit. That has been the biggest factor in the speed. I’m meticulous with paperwork and so are all of the people (so far) working on getting us in. The house listed on Thursday 10/15/2020, I viewed it that night, family viewed it the following day, that same day 10/16 I went from zero to done and pre-qualification letter in hand. We took a day to look at other places and have heart to hearts. Sunday 10/18 did a fine tooth inspection. Husband decided 10/18 he wanted it too, made the offer, which was accepted Monday 10/19. It helps that we had previous home buying experience in 2003, and that I’d been watching the market closely since June, dragging my husband out to a couple dozen places to help him recognize what he likes / hates.

I think we will see the homeless shelter purchased, and possibly even populated, before the end of the year. I want out and our place on the market to minimize the impact to the value of our current home. I expect to take a heavy hit to our current home value, perhaps 15%, the day the shelter is purchased, and another hit the day it opens.

Rabbit kit update – I checked the kits about 2:55 PM. They were considerably toastier than when I brought them into the 45 f garage. I took them to the doe. She hopped into the nest box around 2:59 PM, and out about 3:05 PM. I returned the kits to the garage, all of them had fat round tummies. Success.

    Off to vote.

Fox News just called Texas for Trump. Texas is a sea of red except for Dallas, Houston, Austin, El Paso, San Antonio, and the Valley. But the cancer is growing. My county, Fort Bend County, just threw out all of the republican judges and many others. My republican buddy running for sheriff lost like he told me he was going to. His brother, our current sheriff, may have taken TX-22 House or may not have.

Instead of going to trial and facing possible jail time, a person would have the option of paying a $100 fine or attending new ‘addiction recovery centers’
The state also legalized therapeutic use of psilocybin mushrooms

–hmm, liberal handouts, no jail for drugs, what could POSSIBLY be the social result of those policies?

Maybe. I saw a tweet that one of the valley counties, 94% Hispanic went +30% for Hillary last time. This time it went Biden +5%. That’s huge. Trump was expected to pick up Black votes this time also.

Two names I expect to see batted around for 2024:
    – Nikki Haley. Successful governor, UN ambassador with the most guts since Jeane Kirkpatrick.
    – Dan Crenshaw. Navy seal. Speaks good Spanish. He’s laying the groundwork for higher office, maybe the White House, governor’s mansion, or to succeed Cornyn. He ran some great ads, btw.
