Mon. Dec. 2, 2019 – counting down, new week

By on December 2nd, 2019 in Random Stuff

Chilly and damp.

I had a nice weekend doing stuff completely unrelated to prepping, civic duties, or even family duties. And I’ll pay for that this week 🙂

Seriously though, it’s good to have outside interests.

This week I’ve got a continuing ed class with my Citizens Police Academy alumni on human trafficking (part two.) I’ve also got a couple of auction pickups, but not much else. I’m hoping to catch up a bit. Then in a couple of weeks, I’ll be headed to the midwest with the family for Christmas. Lots to do before then including several social and school functions.

Lots of year end stuff to do too, that’s not currently on my lists or calendars.

Better do something besides sit here….

Sarah’s in fine form today…. go, RTWT

“It begins with what Epstein was and what he did. Back int he early two thousands I heard of Bill Clinton and flights in the Lolita Express leaving out of Mena airport in Arkansas. Dark mutterings of young girls and drug traffic. And all the time, all the time I thought “Right-wing fever swamps. I guess we have nutters too. Because if that were happening, involving someone who later became president, there’s no way it wouldn’t have come out. Everyone would know.”

Well, dear fever swamps, I want to apologize to you. You were right, I was wrong. It turns out the Lolita Express was flying and Bill Clinton was part of the party and no one NO ONE, not one man jack in the main stream media thought this news worthy? NOT ONE. The Omerta held it as silent as they held Obama’s grades or what courses he actually took in college, or how he got to be president of Harvard Law Review without ever publishing a single thing.

Now, how do you expect me to laugh when someone says all leftist politicians are lizard-beings from Ganymede? HOW can I say that’s insanity because someone would know and report it? They might know, indeed, but they wouldn’t report it. Not on leftists. (And to be fair mad uncle Bernie does look like a reptiloid. Oh, my bad. He’s just a communist. After a while it starts showing in their features.)”

Coming soon to a city near you… one of three coordinated incidents….

“Chilling moment heavily armed cartel ‘hitmen’ storm Mexican hospital and kidnap a stretcher-bound patient who was later found brutally murdered and dismembered in the middle of a road

Heavily armed with rifles, the seven masked assailants – believed to be members of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel – stormed the General Hospital of Salvatierra
Holding a security guard hostage and forcing him to help them find their target, the men move quickly down the hall before hauling out a patient on a stretcher”

“The area of Guanajuato has been experiencing a difficult period of conflict between local criminal gangs of late, officials said, primarily between Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel and the Jalisco Cartel.

On Wednesday 27, Mexican authorities responded to the three hospital sieges with raids on various homes said to be used by the cartel as safe houses.

To stem their efforts, gang members reportedly blocked surrounding roads with large vehicles and set them on fire.

In Guanajuato in the last few days alone, at least 37 murders have been reported across 10 different municipalities.”

Granted that we don’t know the backstory for the patients, possibly rival cartel members already injured in previous conflict, possibly normal people marked for death who thought they’d survived…

Watch the video. Look at the pix of the hospital. It was designed with those broad sidewalks, and the vehicle ramp. Wonder why they put up that fence?

Please. Everyone in The South knew about Bill Clinton, Roger, and Mena Airport in the 90s. The people in Arkansas got tired of his BS in 1980 and swept Clinton out of office. Hillary and Dick Morris engineered their return to the Governor’s Mansion in 1982.

All of it was out there for anyone who cared to look. Don’t even get me started on the story of why we had Jocelyn Elders as Surgeon General for eight years. It was the economy, stupid.

And Ross Perot. He’s why Ginsberg sits in the Payola seat on the Supreme Court.

I’m still surprised that Clinton made it past the moment when Ginnifer Flowers stepped to the podium and played that tape of the phone calls, particularly the line about Cuomo being “a mafioso … or something”.

“Joe Biden: And by the way I sit on a stand, I got hot, I got hairy legs that turn, that, that, that, turn blond in the sun. And the kids used to come up and reach in and pull and rub my legs, and watch the hairs rise up again. So I learned about roaches. I learned about kids jumping up on my lap. And I love kids jumping on my lap. “

    Watch the video.

Biden didn’t drop out Labor Day Weekend on schedule. The candid video will get worse before he walks away.

    From @Greg yesterday:

I am not getting my bills from DirecTV and Citibank.

Double check your DirecTV customer settings on the web site. My former corporate masters are very sly about sneaking in “electronic billing only” configurations. They are loathe to send out paper, but I make them bill my landline that way — keeping the paper flowing isn’t easy.

Well, I will not be a customer of DirecTV much longer. A month at most.

Lots of people aren’t going to be customers of DirecTV much longer. That’s the big problem for AT&T.

    https://www.hydrocarbonprocessing.com/news/2019/11/us-energy-related-co2-emissions-rose-in-2018-for-first-year-since-2014

“Total U.S. energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2018 rose to 5.27 B metric tons, 2.7% more than its 2017 level. The primary reasons for the increase were higher natural gas-related emissions resulting from more extreme summer and winter weather and growth in transportation-related petroleum emissions, linked to a strong economy. U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions declined in 6 of the past 10 years and were 12% lower in 2018 than in 2005, according to a data series published in the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) Monthly Energy Review.”

Uh oh, we are all going to die.

BTW, at $75/metric ton of CO2, that forthcoming carbon tax will $395 billion/year. Just think about what an energy tax of that amount will do to the economy. Not good.

The long standing rumor in telecom is that the legacy Uverse tech will get pushed off onto Frontier, the phone companies’ dumping ground for unwanted land line territories. Essentially, Frontier is the old GTE, but another long standing rumor is that AT&T will throw them CA land line..

Kind of a shame but it’s their fault. I installed my dish in 1999. My very first eBay bid. I bid $75 max. Won it for $69. Shipping $29. Installation kit $29.95. Total= 127.95. A Sony system.

I forget the original monthly bill. About $35. After a few years, local channels were available for an extra $3. That was nice. Ok, now about $45 with taxes a month.
When I bought the Vizio I switched to their HD receiver. Def not a Sony, that’s for sure. After several rate increases, my Mom moved in, I activated her her receiver on my account. She moved out, and the monthly bill with one receiver (also a DVR) dropped to $142 and change.

Dealing with DirecTV wasn’t too bad other than the whole “big company” thing. After Deathstar took control, it became a real pain in the tail.

There wasn’t much to watch, anyway. The cooking channels don’t cook anymore. The chopped out the reason to watch. Home improvement shows turned into remodel and flip shows. Yeah, when it’s down to watching the local news at 6 and Wheel of Fortune plus some on the ID channel, time to quit.

I tossed the dish onto the scrap heap and installed a $50-ish antenna. I get the five networks out of Austin. In HD. Which was _not_ the case with DirecTv. More like something below 720. The best part was discovering the sub-channels. Add a Roku and I have more free stuff to watch than I have time. 🙂

I have Sling, Orange and Blue, for $48/month with taxes. Some people here like Nascar and College Football. Ok, have fun…..

@rick, I know it’s still a mystery, but MAN o MAN it’s been slow reloads, and 500 errors for the last few days. My current reloads are about a minute….

I thought maybe the edit timer might be an issue, since that’s about the only thing different, but even with ublock stopping javascript, page reload was over 30 seconds.

Is it possible to widen a single garage door from 8 ft to 10 ft ? The new used house has an extended garage with a double door and single door. I have 2.5 ft from the edge of the current 8 ft door to the inside of the wall of the garage. I need to find a structural engineer around here who can tell me the answer and recommend a contractor. I know that the header would have to be replaced along with the complete garage door (panels, rails, etc). You can see the single door on picture number three.

And it looks like Disney Plus will not work on any of the Tivos available today. Fail !

TiVo lifetime is worth the expense if they still offer it.

I receive an offer about once a year to transfer the service to a new box, but my Series 3 is still going strong.

If you get a Bolt, I’ll send a few commands to try to see if the network download interface is still accessible. I’m curious.

Hey Rick, here’s a data point for you, in IE 11 pages load instantly. FF 69.0.
1 they are taking about one minute, while it displays “waiting for ttgnet.com”…. in the bottom status bar. I’m running ublock origin 1.24.2 on FF, nothing on IE.

  25. nick flandrey says:

Of course, as soon as I hit send, that changed and IE is spinning waiting for the journal pages too.

    n

maybe it’s the calendar widget? The pages in IE that load instantly, mainly everything but the current /journal/ pages have oct-2019 calender and most recent comments in the right sidebar….

If you have Cygwin or a Linux machine, get the MAK and IP address of your TiVo and try the following:

    curl -c cookies.txt -s -L –digest \
    -k ‘https://[ip address]/nowplaying/index.html?Recurse=Yes’ \
    -u tivo:[MAK]

Regarding the slow load problems here — just got back from CA (14 hour drive). I’ll look at things tomorrow. No energy tonight.

Re: DirecTV – been a customer for decades. Have had no problems. Do a lot of time-shifting of network TV. Wife likes the Hallmark Christmas movies – tons get recorded to the DVR. Occasional TCM. MeTV for classic old stuff.

No issues with anything. Just works here. The DVR stuff is the main feature used around here.

Quick look at the slow response. Not related to anything on the WordPress side. The initial request to the site, which goes to the Dreamhost infrastructure, is what is taking a long time. I’ll need to chat with the Dreamhost guys to see what the problem is…I suspect something on their end, perhaps with the shared server.

But that will have to wait until tomorrow. Need to catch up on several other things, plus an eye-doc appt tomorrow, and a trip to the grocery store to get fresh supplies after being out of town for a week.

  29. nick flandrey says:

@Rick, get some sleep. Nothing you’re gonna solve quickly anyway, as it’s been a while already.

I never liked directv, mainly because of the interface, and the way they compressed less popular channels. I have my one big customer who has 4 DTV boxes feeding his 15 tvs throughout the house. We don’t use any of the built in sharing or networking features, as we control them and route the video using a crestron system.

Cable was not and still isn’t an option for them. They mainly use the DVRs to pause whatever they’re watching live, and not to time shift.
