Fri. Oct. 18, 2019 – school daze school days, dear old golden rule dayz

By on October 18th, 2019 in Random Stuff

Cool and damp? Probably. [54F and 99%RH]

Got a bunch of stuff done yesterday but not anywhere near enough to make TODAY easier….

I’ll start at the rent house installing the craigslist/facebook dryer. If it actually works, I’ll be happy. If not, the number of jailhouse and gang tattoos on the seller will have me pulling parts and putting them on ebay, while trying to find another replacement. Guy and his girlfriend might be completely honorable, but I don’t need to find out for the small change I’ve got invested…

Then some personal care, and placing some items where they might sell locally.

Then to round out the afternoon and evening, I will be installing temporary and fun! lighting for our school’s Fall Festival today. Then I’ll be packing it up, a bit later. No roadies or tour buses for me, but my wife will help. I’ve got a 400w long throw UV floodlight, a rock concert venue sized fog machine, and some colored lights to put the fun! in dis-functional… I can’t wait until my daughters need me to start supplying sound systems or bigger light shows. I’m a one man rental house 😉 and I like my geezer rock LOUD…

Geezer rock. Hmmm… Geezerock could be a good name for a band, heavy metal. Of course it has to be loud – we’re all going hard of hearing.

@JimB: Check LATimes, 1st page, for Garlock fault info.

Great opportunity to get rid of all the crap we don’t want to move. I had a friend help me the last couple of days move heavy items into the garage and clear out the attic. It’s very difficult with the wifes health issues that need constant attention. We have about 8 (cheap) book shelves, two nice tables and chairs and LOTS of unused stuff we bought but never needed. I plan on pricing things really cheap. For example, if I think an item is worth $8 second hand I will price it at $2. I plan to avoid pricing at $5 & $10 by dropping to $4 and $7. I figured that I would more likely buy something for $4 than $5.

  4. Nick Flandrey says:

I was determined to get rid of a whole bunch at my hamfest this year. I priced very aggressively and it flew off the tables.

Even money prices can help because you don’t need to make change, but lower prices sell….

    Union jobs. “Closed shop” state.

  7. SteveF says:

Sabotage or untrained, undocumented “best and brightest” workers?

  8. Mark W says:

IIRC AvE got comments on his first video that union workers would never have removed all the pins. In a followup video he called them out. He was right.

  9. JimB says:

CowboySlim, I checked on line, but there was only a story about the Compton quake. I am currently in Mission Viejo, too far away to feel it.

I do monitor two sites, and Ridgecrest had two 3+ quakes, a 3.0 Wednesday at 2134 and a 3.9 Thursday at 2234. These were quite a distance from the Garlock fault. Any more info?

Lots of illegal labor in Seattle, but that’s a very visible project.

Thanks, CowboySlim. I found it. Here is a direct link:

There is some good info in the article, and I will follow up later today with the sources at USGS and others.

One thing the article gets wrong is that the Garlock fault has been quiet for a long time. Our local geologists have said it is one of the most active in the world, but the quakes are low intensity. It does have the potential for a big one (8.0 claimed in the article), and I think there was a fairly large one in the 1950s.

Hah ! I saw a mountain lion on my large commercial property about five years ago. He was a big dude, about a four foot long body and a three foot tail. He had been watching a deer fawn until I came down the road in my truck.

Here’s the latest on the Hard Rock Hotel collapse in New Orleans: Lawsuit: Shortcuts, bad design, shoddy construction, warnings ignored:

Among the more serious charges, the building did not have steel framing or bracing on the upper floors. And insufficent use of horizontal beams, fill beams, and pole jacks. Also claims that concrete was not adequately cured and that dips in the concrete flooring appeared on the upper floors.

One of the (non-union?) workers who was killed was a Mexican citizen. At least one surviving workman had to be interviewed via an interpreter.

The cherry on top: Tomorrow the city is planning on bringing down the two tottering tower cranes via “controlled explosions.” What could possibly go wrong?

“Angry Londoners Drag Climate Change Protesters From Roof of Train”
    https://summit.news/2019/10/17/angry-londoners-drag-climate-change-protesters-from-roof-of-train/

“Angry Londoners furious at having their lives disrupted dragged ‘Extinction Rebellion’ climate change protesters from the roof of a train this morning.”

“The incident happened at Canning Town Tube station, located in London’s poor east end – a particularly stupid venue for Extinction Rebellion activists to try to pull such a stunt.”

“One decidedly middle class looking protester climbed on top of the train but was pelted with objects before being dragged back down to the platform.”

“Almost immediately, another protester climbed on top of the train but was also pursued and dragged back down.”

“London Underground staff had to intervene to prevent the protesters getting a substantial beating.”

Why did the Underground staff intervene ?

“Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of $25,000 for information on the shooting death of an Australian man who died protecting his family during a home invasion in the Katy area earlier this week.”

“Brenton Estorffe, 29, was killed during a break-in at his home located in the 6900 block of Glen Rosa Drive Wednesday, according to a release from the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. Two male suspects allegedly broke into Estorffe’s home late Wednesday night by sneaking through a back window, police said.”

    This makes no sense whatsoever.

ADD: Why would two guy invade a home in the middle of the night ? Unless, they knew about something and were looking for it.

Had a fun night at the Fall Festival. Ate pizza, cookies, and 5 kinds of chili. I didn’t hear who won the chili contest, but they were all edible. Kids had fun.

I did some face painting with my UV reactive paints. That was cool.

Touched base with a couple of other parents we only see at school events.

I’m hoping to get a bunch of home stuff done tomorrow, as there is not much more than one volleyball game on the calendar. I’m sure something will come up.

Finished up at the rent house. Installed the dryer and tested it. Works fine. Tightened a few bolts that I noticed were loose- toilet seat, kitchen cabinet handles… got a haircut, bought some stuff for the kids’ Halloween costumes.

Short day because of getting the festival set up, but I did manage to do a few things.

Now off to bed. I’m wiped out.

The London Underground incidents: WTF are climate protesters doing, protesting public transport? That makes zero sense. Anyway, I’m frankly glad that they got a beat-down – maybe it will sink in that Joe Average doesn’t support stupidity. And the next idiotic protestors will re-think their clever plan.

On the subject of deliberate stupidity: It’s all over the interwebs, the way Trump claims that the US and Italy have been allies since Roman days. Now, Trump emits some poorly worded statements, but that just wasn’t believable. It took a while to find the actual quote, where he is talking about a common cultural heritage. The journalists are getting desperate…

The same on the Syrian withdrawal. Why would anyone object to the US GTFO of the Middle East? He ought to withdraw a lot more troops from a lot more places. It’s pretty hilarious, watching the news media spin this. Unfortunately, it also seems to work.

@Lynn: I absolutely loved the Honor Harrington series. But after the 1234th volume, I stopped buying them a few years ago, because the story arc seemed to be very over-extended. I know Weber hit a gold mine, but the newer books didn’t seem nearly as good as the earlier volumes. Have you found the last few books to be worth buying?

  27. Ray Thompson says:

Why would anyone object to the US GTFO of the Middle East?

The US needs to GTFO of all countries. Quit meddling in other country’s business and problems. The US would be livid if some other country interfered with the US.

If some country wants military aid, pay up, in advance, in gold. No pay, no help. And stop any foreign aid to any country that protests the US.

In exchange we will send them Nancy Pelosi, Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson and Oprah Winfrey. No charge.

  28. SteveF says:

The friends of liberty everywhere, the guardians only of our own.

I want our troops out of other countries and positioned instead along our southern border. I don’t want a wall. Instead, drones and other surveillance devices can tell the helicopters and the infantry squads where to go. And no more of the luxury detainment centers or catch-and-release programs. If you’re in the US and you aren’t supposed to be, ten years of slavery is your fate — recall that slavery isn’t actually forbidden in the US; it’s still allowed as a punishment for a crime. It’s kind of rough on little kids, but if the invaders don’t care about their children, why should we?

  29. Nick Flandrey says:

Regarding Syria, anyone who talks negatively about the withdrawal in person near me, I ask them if they can tell me in one or two sentences why we were there in the first place, who we supported, and why.

Haven’t had anyone yet who could do it.

We should change the Constitution so “Congress shall lead the charge into any foreign country.” I wonder how many conflicts we would be involved in after that. Chicken Hawks. Buck, buck, buck.
