Month: May 2019

Sat. May 11, 2019 – rain?

Probably cool-ish and saturated.  [68F and 99%RH]  But I’m posting early because I’ve got a full day.

Non-prepping hobby today, sportsball games and swim practice with the girls, an auction pickup, and a variety of other stuff to do.

Not to mention the yard/garden/home work I need to do.

All this while under the threat of catastrophic rain.  [weatherunderground has the rain  coming after noon]  When I had dinner, the sky was clear.  When I went to bed all the sky was starting to fill in with clouds.   The creeks and bayous were back in their banks on the outflow side of the city, but in the area northwest, they were full or out of their banks.  That water will be passing thru the city today, with any new rain added to it.  Our big holding tank, Addicks Reservoir, continues to rise.  It’s doing its job of holding water that would otherwise flood the city, but if you live in its shadow, you get nervous.

Hopefully we’re not getting clobbered today.

I’ll edit this if we are… [not clobbering time at the moment]

Fri. May 10, 2019 – made it through

67F and wet this morning, but the rain seems to have stopped.  Gauge shows 0.6 from midnight to now.  Didn’t see where we ended up before bed.

Schools are all closed.  I wonder if my auction pickups will be available.  I’ll be taking the kids with me if they are…

Some actual prepping info to pass along, I’ll add some links later.  Right now I need to see what the wife’s plans are, and get back to bed if possible 🙂

Thur. May 9, 2019 – quick post

77F and wet. Got some spotty and intermittent rain yesterday, but no big downpours.

According to the police chief, the city is bracing for a lot of rain this weekend.

Joy.

Had a lovely “graduation” ceremony last night, and got another certificate for my “I love me” wall. I’m not the collector that some are, one lady had 6 CPA programs under her belt. I definitely recommend doing it though.

I’m off to Austin for a pickup today, so light commenting.

Wed. May 8, 2019 – lotta stuff going on

71F and wet.

Wife finally made it home sometime after 130 this morning.

I’m so tired I can barely think.

Review of my class last night (full auto on the range!) and a lesson learned later this morning.

Tues. May 7, 2019 – creatures of light

75F and 95%RH. Sopping wet.

Most of us here are creatures of the light. Civilization, learning, sharing, peace- these are our goals and preference. We are also LITERALLY of the light. I think the history of civilization can be traced in our ability to make light, cheaply, easily, and widely.

Our adversaries are creatures of darkness. Chaos, destruction, hatred, instinct, emotion- that is where they thrive and prosper.

Think about what you will do to keep the darkness at bay, metaphorically and literally.

Mon. May 6, 2019 – early post

Probably warm and damp. [64F and 99%RH]

Wife is traveling for business, so I’ve got to get the kids to school for a couple of days.  That means very tight mornings, hence this is going up the night before.

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for commercial aviation and the passengers and crews.  500 days without an accident doesn’t mean you won’t have one tomorrow.  A whole bunch are happening close together, and it could just be that uneven distribution of accidents through time.  Like flooding or major storms.  Or who knows, someone may have it in for Boeing and threw in the russian one to keep people off the trail…  That’s the problem with conspiracy theories, they tend to pop up everywhere once you start looking at the world that way.

It doesn’t help that we often find out that the conspiracy theory was correct.

After dropping off the kids, I’ve got a couple of auction pickups and I need to process in all the stuff I bought the last couple of weeks.  Unfortunately for my pocketbook, much of it was bought for personal reasons.  I usually try to buy enough in the same auction to pay for my personal purchases, if not make money, but it didn’t work out that way this week.  On the other hand, I stocked up on items I use for half or less than I’d normally pay.  It feels a bit like getting high on my own supply however much it makes sense.

And with that, I’m off….  talk amongst yourselves.

Sun. May 5, 2019 – work to do…

70F and 98%RH this am.  Nice weather to work outside.

And I’ve got stuff stacked up and waiting, having spent too much of the week driving back and forth to auction pickups.

Cukes seem to have established themselves in the side bed.  No sign of the carrots from seed yet, and maybe never.  Blueberries are mostly getting closer to ripe.  If the animals don’t get them I might get a whole cup of berries this year.   Apple trees are still slowly leafing in.  Not very vigorous.  The two mature citrus trees have a black dirt on the leaves that I’m told is  a fungus.  I’ve got to get that addressed soon, and I believe it means no oranges or grapefruits from those trees this year.

I still have to get the rest of the seedlings I bought into the ground.

I picked up an 8ft piece of oak limb to cut up and add to the pile, and a couple of 7 gallon nursery pots to transfer growing trees into.  They were in a junk pile while I had my pickup truck out.  I’d like to get some more tree limbs for the wood pile.

We’re 26 days from the start of the hurricane season.  Gennie needs to be connected.  Soon.

It’s been 3 months since I saw any evidence of rats in the garage or attic.   Time to cleanup and start restocking the food shelves, especially with the continued threat of ebola.  Seriously, you’ll want to hide from this if it comes to America.  How convenient if it waits until November of next year…

I really need to rotate or reassess the condition of the stuff I have stored at my secondary location too.  I mostly just piled it there, and haven’t been at all good about rotating or restocking.  Some of the obvious stuff like UHT milk is done for…

How have you guys been doing?  I heard crickets when I asked last week, which makes me think “too busy to prep”.   I know the feeling.

Sat. May 4, 2019 -May the Fourth Be with You….

65F and slightly less than saturated.

Geeks around the world rejoice!

And if you are a Trekkie, whelp, I’m not sure what to say, except that you should probably hide your shame 😉

When someone in the future remixes the current crop of Star Wars dreck into something cool, I’ll say “see I told you there was a decent story buried somewhere under all that crap…” Until then, may all the haters who somehow were put in charge of destroying one of the most consistent money makers in Hollywood live long enough to see everything they love destroyed, one little piece at a time.

Today I’m going to what is essentially a very specialized and tiny swapmeet. That will fill my morning, and sports and piano recitals will fill much of the rest of the day. Power bars for lunch again, yum.

No rest for the wicked.

Get out and work in the garden, rotate your stacks, run your gennie/chainsaw/tractor, cook on a Coleman stove or firepit, or talk to your neighbor. It won’t hurt and it might help.

Fri. May 3, 2019 – catch up day

69F and wet. Rained last night. Doesn’t seem to be raining now.

I’m mostly home today, with only a short trip to pickup stuff to sell tomorrow. Hopefully a short trip anyway. I need to spend some time on intake of the stuff I already got and empty the trucks.

An easier day would be nice, as I’m taking some antibiotics and Flowmax to try and narrow down an issue that’s been bugging me for a while. The Cipro is making me feel a bit weird (or maybe the Flowmax as it says it can cause sleepiness.) In any case I don’t feel 100% and would be lying around if that were an option.

Guess I’d better get the kids up and start the day.

Thur. May 2, 2019 – driving day

75F and damp.  Got a couple of sprinkles yesterday but no real rain and no T storms.  Forecast for today had the system looking pretty much the same, so maybe we’ll get the same…  or not.  One site is calling for ‘heavy intense rains’ later in the day.

Had a nice lunch yesterday and talked preparedness with some new guys.  (the lunch attendees come and go depending on whim and what part of town the lunch is in)  Hams are generally a pretty prepped bunch.  Meatspace!

My pickups today are more personal than for resale, hopefully advancing one of my security projects.

Plans for tomorrow include getting some stuff ready to sell at my non-prepping hobby meeting over the weekend.

I’ve noticed a lot of juvenile squirrels in the neighborhood.  I haven’t done a count or anything, but there seems to be more of them than usual.  I have no idea if that’s significant.

Anyway, breakfast ain’t gonna make itself…
