Wed. May 29, 2019 – counting down May!

By on May 29th, 2019 in Random Stuff

79F and humid.  Sunny with clouds yesterday, no rain for me.  Super hot in the sun with any exertion soaking me in sweat.  Summer is here.

Amazing how little I get done while minding the kids.  I was  a project managing high flier, priding myself on finishing jobs and driving through any issues.  Now I’m lucky to get minor tasks done the first time.  Good thing I’ve got a strong ego *cough*.

The news is already moving on, back to cute royal kids, girls in bikinis with big bottoms, and insult politics.   I do note for AOC, “Welcome to the big leagues kid, now quit your whining.”  Even with something like death threats, she exposes her hate for men and inbuilt prejudices.

Does she really receive death threats? Every one is logged and forwarded to Capitol Hill Police?

Nutters of America, please don’t make Ocasio-Cortez a martyr. We’ll have the Green New Deal shoved down our throats in less than two years “in her memory”, candles burning underneath her picture on the steps of the Capitol. And God only knows what will be in the bill. Remember, Obamacare nationalized student loans under the radar.

Go watch “Milk”. Revisionist history glosses over that Harvey Milk and George Moscone were sleazebag politicians with ties to Jim Jones cult.

When powerful men stop finding Ocasio-Cortez sexually desirable, she’ll be banished back to Westchester to live out the rest of her life in obscurity. I want her to live a *long* time with the stink of her current antics being the first thing that pops into the neighbors minds when they see her at the supermarket.

“‘Don’t say we didn’t warn you!’ Chinese state newspaper uses a code word for WAR to threaten the U.S. as it hints it will ban the export of rare earth minerals – essential for nuclear power plants and LED lights – if Washington refuses to back down”

so, rare earth elements aren’t. We’ve got huge mines in CONUS that we just don’t use.

I guess headline writers don’t realize we don’t build nuclear power plants or LED lights in the US.

Why, things might get so bad that we have to go back to incandescent bulbs. The Dark Ages!

What’s next? No more avocado toast? Oh, right, that’s a trade war with Mexico — avocado toast and Key Lime pie.

I want TidePod Evita to be found dead, with evidence of her having drunk herself to death on very rare, expensive booze, in the finest commissar style.

The wife just had an interview call from the US Medicare office. They wanted to verify if she was eligible to start receiving benefits (7 months) early. Based on the facts, the pleasant woman (surprise) from Medicare said once the forms are filed by her doctor, she should start receiving Medicare benefits in July. She opted for part “B” at $138 per month, automatically deducted from her SSI payments. This takes a worry off my mind as I am concerned that I may be forcibly retired before year end.

Well. Ain’t this grand? KXAN in Austin re-did their antenna. Ah, they “might” have reduced power, too. Just click, and off the air for me. 42, CBS seems to have vanished at the same time. TVFool.com shows /no/ CBS for Austin.

Waco is a bit far for UHF….

If it was just me, I’d say the hell with it. But there are other people here and they like their Wheel of Fortune and Price is Right … and then Nascar goes to NBC from Fox FS1 later this season.

I’m not going back to DirecTV. We both burned that bridge. From what I’ve seen, Dish is sketchy. But they are the other choice.

KEYE (Austin CBS) isn’t going anywhere.

I get all of the Austin affiliates in Cedar Park/Round Rock with antennas mounted on Pyle stands in the attic, no amplification. Mohu “mudflaps” aren’t sufficient beyond the Fox affiliate, PBS, and a couple of others.

Call Antennas Direct and talk to their reps. They won’t sell you more than you truly need.

  9. paul says:

Ok, thanks for the Antennas Direct suggestion. But it all worked until a few days ago. And it’s not just me.

I have an antenna outside. It hasn’t moved. (marked it!) But TVFool not showing KEYE existing is strange.

Sometimes I get channel 2 out of Fredricksburg. Not much there to watch… and I do pick it up from the back side of the antenna with a metal roofed house in the way.

Today we left monument valley. On the way, we stopped at the point where The Doctor, Amy, and Rory all met up with River Song in “The Impossible Astronaut.” From there, we drove to Lake Powell and stopped at Glen Canyon Dam. Nice visitor center, and we took the tour. Now we are at Lake Powell Resort for two nights. Relaxing this evening. The tour director, er wife, has told me the future schedule many times, but I just wing it and go where I’m told. She has done a great job, as usual, of planning the trip.

David Tennant’s “Good Omens” streams on Amazon starting Friday.

I’m hoping the series is successful and inspires the BBC to make some changes on “Doctor Who”. Even if they stick with the current lead, the writing for the last season left a *lot* to be desired.

spent the morning with the kids at swim practice. Went to my ham radio lunch and chatted about the upcoming field day. Kids were well behaved. Hit a Goodwill and then stopped at the gub store. Had nice chat with friends there, kids watched tv. Not many customers during the hour I spent there.

Made it home to dinner and an online auction.

    Off to bed soon.

Not much really got done today. I hope tomorrow is more productive.

TVA just added a Gen 2 nuclear power plant in 2016 (that it started in 1980 or so):
    https://www.tva.gov/Energy/Our-Power-System/Nuclear/Watts-Bar-Nuclear-Plant

Southern Company and South Carolina Power are adding four new new Gen4 ??? units due in 2021 – 2025. Gen4 units can reputedly not meltdown.
    http://www.world-nuclear.org/information-library/country-profiles/countries-t-z/usa-nuclear-power.aspx

Several other companies such as Florida Power and Light are very close to starting about 5 or 6 more Gen4 units. What is spurring this is government guarantees.

    +1,000

We gave up on the latest series – didn’t watch the last few episodes. We did watch the Christmas special, and the only thing I remember is being underwhelmed.

Well, I am an idiot as usual. But so are the Home Depot guys. I rented the boom bucket lift and could not get the bucket console to work. I called the 800 number and complained. The idiot on the phone told me take the console back and swap it. So I took the whole kit and kaboodle back to the Home Depot. The rental guys had me use the other console that they had, no go. I ASKED THE GUYS TO GO CHECK MY WORK AND THEY REFUSED TO. So the Home Depot guys refunded my $300 deposit money and I left. I mentioned that I was going to try Aztec Equipment Rental and they quipped that I needed to be ready for higher prices.

So I stopped at Aztec and they had a boom bucket lift (exact same model). The price was $301 versus the Home Depot price of $372. Both including insurance. So they rung me up and I drove my truck to the back to get loaded up. I then told the guys that I was going to test the boom lift before I took off. I dropped the outriggers, tried the side console, all is good. Then I moved to the bucket and no joy ! Then one of the guys said, hey you’ve got to move the power switch to the boom bucket console position. I had totally forgotten this. Then the boom bucket console worked like a champ ! Home Depot, your customer service sucks !

I get back to the warehouse, stop in the office to sign a three year middle six figure contract that we have been desperately waiting on, and tell my son about my boom lift problems. He volunteers that he remembered that and why did I not ask him ? Smart ***.

Anyway, I got another outside light replaced and an inside light replaced. The old lights are 1,000 watt metal halides, four feet tall, 50 lbs, and 25 ft off the ground ! I had to bear hug the old light fixture to get it off the hook that was bolted to the ceiling I-beam. I am now wearing 15 years of dirt and grime. Plus I managed to break the 18 inch tall bulb when I went back to the ground to remove the old fixture from the bucket and get the new fixture.

I do not owe the boom lift back until 230pm so I will try to grab another inside fixture tomorrow. Or maybe another canopy fixture. I am concerned that the 150 watt fixtures are not big enough to light the warehouse 3,750 ft2. There are 11 fixtures inside the warehouse, after dark one was ok, but it is hard to extrapolate that to 11. There is a 200 watt version of the light fixture and just $34 each more that I may need to check out. There is also a 240 watt version too.

_Revelation: Demons Of The Past_ by Ryk Spoor
    https://www.amazon.com/Revelation-Demons-Past-Ryk-Spoor/dp/1987625196/?tag=ttgnet-20

Book number one of a three book space opera series. I read the well printed and bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback. Since CreateSpace (Amazon) is the publisher, I suspect that this book is self published by Ryk Spoor. I have ordered books 2 and 3 from Big River.

As mentioned in previous reviews, I love space opera. And I love psi. Mix the two together and you get a totally cool mix for me. And there is a new word in this book for me, psispy.

It took me a while to figure out the cover of the book. I was confused about the person on the cover with the bandage around his eyes. Somebody clued me in that it was the Prime Monitor. And it is not a eye bandage, he is a visor boy.

BTW, am loving Dr. Vick the mind blind velociraptor and Dr. Guvthor the 4 meter tall one ton bear who does not fit in normally sized spaceships. Ryk has built an incredibly rich universe here. The Reborn Empire covers thousands of planets with many differently sized intelligent beings.

My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars (13 reviews)

FPL received approval from the state for two more reactors at Turkey Point along with expanded generator capacity, but we’ll see if those reactors happen. The opposition isn’t ever going to back down, FPL and Duke Energy don’t exactly have the best track record running their existing facilities, and the new Governor has already demonstrated that he won’t waste political capital on old fights like abortion … and probably nuclear power.

I remember reading that Disney gave up their rights to a reactor in the state in exchange for some concession from the Legislature. Recently too. They held the permits for something like 50 years.

Instead of a reactor, Disney built Celebration. A reactor probably would have generated less heartache and contamination.

For now, China doesn’t need the feed because they just destroyed milions of pigs due to African Swine Flu. China has cancelled huge purchases of canola-seed from Canada (well, claimed they were contaminated with pests, including some that don’t exist in Canada). This is a two-fer: China doesn’t need the feed anyway and it is also part of continuing punishment for our daring to arrest and hold Ms Meng (Huawei executive and daughter of the founder) for extradition to the US on a US arrest warrant related to technology sales to Iran. It is very messy as Canada is getting squeezed by the US/China trade-war. We have told the Chinese this is not political – they think this is nothing but political and want her released (she is confined to her rather nice mansion in Vancouver). Very early in all this, Trump said he would consider this part of a settlement with China (thereby making it political and throwing Canada under the bus). Trump only said this once and has been silent since, which is unlike him. I assume (no one knows) a number of people (US Secretary of State, US Trade Representative, Canadian PM, etc…) told him to STFU because if he makes it political, the Canadian courts will likely rule against extradition and release her (and there goes any leverage if he wants to use this later – which would of course throw Canada further under the bus. Ugly mess.) For now, the legal process grinds on and the mess with China continues. Canada has yet to make a decision regarding use of Huawei technology and that factors into all of the mess. China will need a lot of feed next year for a new generation of pigs, assuming they get the infection under control / eradicated. Who will they buy from if the US soybean crop is reduced and Canada is to be ignored? There is not that much spare capacity in Brazil, etc…
