*ARLINGTON, VA – MAY 27: Mary McHugh mourns her dead fiance Sgt. James Regan at “Section 60” of the Arlington National Cemetery May 27, 2007. Regan, an American Special Forces soldier, was killed by an IED explosion in Iraq in February of this year, and this was the first time McHugh had visited the grave since the funeral. Section 60, the newest portion of the vast national cemetery on the outskirts of Washington D.C, contains hundreds of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. Family members of slain American soldiers have flown in from across the country for Memorial Day. (Photo by John Moore/Getty Images) *** Local Caption *** Mary McHugh

One of my friends got up yesterday in Sunday School class and told us about his Vietnam army days. He was in a platoon in 1969 and 1970, almost two years before he came home early. Out of the 15 ? 20 ? men in the platoon, six came home wounded, including him. His patrol ran into a VC patrol on the side of a hill, quite unexpected for both sides. Five of his fellow platoon members were killed. I’ve know him for almost 30 years and never knew that he was a Vietnam veteran, much less a purple heart holder. He still misses his platoon members almost 50 years later.

I presume that you are talking about John Bolton. I would be careful assuming that Trump means what he says.

I have come to believe that Trump’s treatment of Pelosi and Schumer a week ago was one of the most masterful manipulations that I have ever seen. Trump cold-cocked both of them simultaneously. Pelosi and Schumer had no idea whatsoever that he was going to stiff them. This took many weeks, maybe even months to setup.

Mustache Boy (yes, Bolton) needs to be watched.

I have no doubt that Trump is playing a long game in domestic politics and in dealing with the Russians, but, at the risk of being accused of flogging an expired equine, a lot happens at MacDill, far from Inspectors General and DoD civilian oversight. I don’t believe he has total control over matters which are the purview of the people at that facility.

It would be nice to boycott stores today, so that it doesn’t pay to stay open, but I need to pickup some things to keep moving.

I installed a new garbage disposal. No choice.

When we bought the house, the inspector noted the old disposal wasn’t installed “to code”. Dunno what that means, but I just swapped out old for new, reattaching to the same cr*ppy plumbing job underneath the kitchen sink.

  12. Greg Norton says:

    Not good.

Great for Tesla shareholders. I’m sure carbon credits are in there somewhere.

In Texas, it will be city and county level. Travis probably first.

Don’t think it can’t happen. The Governor and Legislature didn’t do anything about cities passing paid sick leave ordinances before the latest session adjourned for two years, and Austin’s crazy cell phone law still stands.

But they sure taught Ann Richards’ ghost a thing or two about who is boss in Texas with that “born alive” aborition bill. Yessiree.

  13. brad says:

Garbage disposal: Funny, a purely US thing. Never seen one in Europe. Funny, since they are so normal in the US.

FWIW I don’t miss them either. Big food waste goes into a compost bucket. Little stuff goes down the drain without a blender.

  14. paul says:

Does your dishwasher drain into the disposal? And if so, did you remember to knock out the plug?

Ask me how I know this. 🙂

Someday I’m getting rid of the disposal here. I don’t use it and it smells. A tomato goes bad? It’s plenty easy to toss it out for critters. Or chickens.

  15. Greg Norton says:

Some cities in the US have mandatory composting now, but I think that means the residents can’t simply trash food waste.

  16. Greg Norton says:

Does your dishwasher drain into the disposal? And if so, did you remember to knock out the plug?

    Yup.

I lost the wiring clamp for the original, however, and the new unit did not come with one.

I’ll have to buy a clamp and attach it before I forget.. The house will fail inspection for a sale without that installed.

  17. Greg Norton says:

Went and bought a clamp. Wrong size — measurement on package is ID, not OD. Home improvement stores are a 45 minute round trip minimum in Austin/Round Rock.

While fiddling with clamp, noticed that “rapid replacement” feature is leaking which means that I will have to install the new fixture after all.

Next time, I will pay the $90 to have Home Depot install the disposal and enjoy the increasingly rare day off. The only reason I’m not working for the day job is construction delays due to … the holiday!

  18. Nick Flandrey says:

“did you remember to knock out the plug?

Ask me how I know this.”

    — yup, me too. It ran like that for a year… there was enough space around the plug that it would eventually mostly drain. Tenant smoked a lot of dope and didn’t notice.

I nominally had the day off, but spent much of the day on chores (and recovering from one of the chores; if anyone tells you that allergies are fun, he’s lying) and an hour or two of day-job work, working from home.

And seething a bit at the cluelessness of people wishing “Happy Memorial Day!” as if this is another happy celebration day with presents and happy feelings and sales at the department store and nary a cloud in sight.

    — so why does this girl need to shave her face anyway? Or is it a boy trying to look like a girl? In any case, Costco is selling a version of the Sensor 3 with no Gillette involved. That’s the right number of blades, imho. Or I’ll switch to a single blade, safety or straight. Tolerate, Celebrate, Mandate. The Prog progression.

I just watched “The Wandering Earth” on Netflix. Wild. It is a Chinese made scifi flick about moving the Earth to another star system after the Sun starts expanding into a red giant early. It was not horrible. But it was not awesome either. Maybe recommended ?

First day of vacation. Flew into Flagstaff late yesterday. Took a taxi to the hotel, and then a taxi back to the airport this morning to pick up the rental car. Went to meteor crater and Winslow today. Yep, stood on a corner there.

Tomorrow we head for the Grand Canyon.

Funny thing about the Gillette link above. We stopped at wal-mart this morning to pick up snacks and a case of water. I saw a display for Harry’s razors. I picked one up and a 4 pack of blades. I’ve been using a Gillette Mach 3 turbo for a long time. I’m almost out of refills for it, so it’s a perfect time to dump it. No, Gillette won’t go bankrupt because of me, but this is a pretty easy call. There are plenty of alternatives to their product.

  23. Nightraker says:

Flagstaff is a fun jumping off spot for many places. Antelope Canyon is a great day trip. Horseshoe Bend is becoming tourist-ified although there were articles earlier this year about visitors falling into the Grand Canyon, too. The Segway tour of the town is cool. Don’t forget the Observatory.

  24. Greg Norton says:

Lesson learned — never lose the wire clamp from the garbage disposal in the course of replacing an old one.

The replacement unit will not have that clamp included, and you must have that piece of hardware in place to pass a home inspection.

Home Depot will not sell you the clamp separately, and you may take 3-4 trips to the store before you figure it out (unless you read this). You will be forced to buy the $12 wire kit which includes the clamp and throw away the rest.

I’ll deal with the leaky sink phlange tomorrow. $90 seems like a bargain in retrospect.

My son lost four friends in Iraq on his first tour of duty. Another is still living (outpatient last I heard) in the San Antonio burn unit with two fingers on one hand and three fingers on the other hand.

I try not to wish him a Happy Memorial day but sometimes I forget. He has been known to run over to San Antonio for the holiday to visit a friend. I never served so I doubt that I truly understand.

I wish that my lessons were this cheap. I usually blow $100 before I get a clue.

  27. JimB says:

Hmm, my disposal just uses a standard cable clamp, which probably costs about thirty cents. Two years ago, I replaced our Hobart batch feed model with an InSinkerator batch model. The Hobart was good for almost forty years, and the new one looks even better. Some sort of fiber jammed it, and I couldn’t figure out how to take it apart.

In Nick’s style, I had bought the new one as a display model about twenty years ago, when I just happened to be in an appliance store and saw someone redoing the display. I saw the one batch feed model (somewhat rare) and asked if I could buy it. No one had a price in mind, so I offered $20, and the store accepted. Even processed the sale on the books. I was surprised at a rare stroke of luck.

  28. Greg Norton says:

I probably wasted that much of my time.

  29. Greg Norton says:

Hmm, my disposal just uses a standard cable clamp, which probably costs about thirty cents.

The clamp wasn’t 3/8 or 3/4. I tried both the standard sizes before just buying the wiring kit.

Of course, no one at the store had a clue.

  30. JimB says:

    Of course.

Oh yes, that goes without saying.

And the thing that I hate the most is having to learn the lesson over and over again because my long term memory is full.
