Sat. Feb. 23, 2019 – Girl Scout Cookies on sale!

By on February 23rd, 2019 in Random Stuff

74F and wet. Yuck.

It’s Girl Scout Cookie time. Watch for cookie booths where you shop. The cookie sales are their major fundraiser and they use the money in their local troops. GS cookies last a long time in their unopened packaging, some flavors 2 years or more without refrigeration. Good preps!

I’ll be running around all day, working my list and theirs.

Berkshire Letter Highlights: Shocking $25BN Loss; Buffet Bashes “Deficit Doomsayers”, Emerges As Closet “Austrian”

From Berkshire’s shocking $25BN Q4 loss, to the wild fluctuations in the company’s $173BN portfolio, to Buffett’s optimism about the US, his emergence as an “Austrian” MMTer, here are the highlights from Buffett’s latest annual letter.

edit- a quick scan thru the article looks like the COMPANIES he owns are making money while the INVESTMENTS are not. And Kraft is a net zero over 2 years. That’s a lot of money at risk for no gain.

Berkshire holds far more Treasuries than they should IMHO (I hold ‘B’ shares).

They’re doing someone a political favor if I had to guess why. In return, Warren receives things like red tape for oil pipelines — a pipeline is bad news if you hold the company that makes and sells/leases all the train tanker cars in North America.

Buffett an … Austrian. Hmmm. Okay. Buffett doesn’t actually write the letter himself.

Thanks for the heads up. Gotta go the responsible thing and read the letter.

This is actually the last weekend of cookie season … at least in Austin.

  4. Greg Norton says:

Reading between the lines of the Berkshire letter:
    – Watch GEICO CEO Bill Roberts in succession musical chairs in Omaha.
    – Greg Abel and Ajit Jain have moved up the importance ladder too.
    – Buffett is still mad at IBM management after supporting their buyback stupidity.
    – Defecits aren’t so bad.

I think he also sent a message to Apple about not spending their cash pile recklessly on his watch, but I’m biased against an AAPL TSLA acquisition to the point that I’ll join the inevitable shareholder class action suit if the buyout happens.

Why would Apple waste their money on Tesla? Buy Verizon or T.

Why would Apple waste their money on Tesla? Buy Verizon or T.

Buying VZ or T would mean that the other cell companies suddenly became competitors. Apple wants the iPhone to work with any carrier.

As for TSLA, we’ve been down that discussion road many times here, but it is a concept advanced by Valley pundits as a solution for Apple having, in the words of Austin Powers, “lost their mojo”. The theory is that Apple regains charasmatic leadership in the form of Elon Musk and picks up a new growth product area while Tesla benefits from the tech prowess of Apple and the supply chain genius of Tim Cook.

My opinion as an Apple shareholder is that Valley pundits simply want to get rid of their TSLA shares while the getting is good and they covet that $100 Billion+ which Apple has in the bank. Based on my read of today’s letter to his shareholders, Warren Buffett may believe that also.

Valley pundits are not necessarily deep thinkers just because they work around tech. Spend any time in the area, and you quickly realize how many people out there are frauds whose parents or spouse had the deep pockets to afford the real estate required to establish a semi-permanent presence and build a career.

Huh, maybe ISIS is defeated [for a while, and in one place] after all

The brides holding US passports returning to the US should be arrested, tried for treason and, ultimately, put before a firing squad. Of course, that isn’t going to happen. As a country, we don’t want to be in the business of executing women as traitors, regardless of guilt, and it seems like any lifestyle experiment by snowflakes should be tolerated as long as they pay lip service to being remorseful about their choices when it goes wrong.

At least one of the “brides” is a Dreamer. She is being denied re-entry.

When you leave the USA and join a foreign army that is fighting the USA, you just forfeited your citizenship IMHO. None of them should be allowed back to the USA.

ADD: There is a section in the Constitution about this IIRC.

    https://www.nraila.org/articles/20190222/gun-control-to-be-heard-on-the-floor-of-the-house-of-representatives-next-week

“As we reported last week, anti-gun members of the House Judiciary Committee voted to move forward with two gun control bills. These bills will be on the House floor next week, so please contact your U.S. Representative and ask them to oppose H.R. 8 and H.R. 1112.”

“H.R. 8 would impose so-called “universal” background checks. But, this legislation doesn’t address how criminals actually acquire their firearms, it creates traps for law-abiding gun owners, and it’s been proven not to work.”

“While H.R. 8 is bad, H.R. 1112 is worse. Under that bill, gun sales from licensed dealers would be subject to the discretion of federal officials. Through either malice or incompetence, the legislation creates an unworkable system where gun buyers could be placed in an endless loop of background checks and would never actually receive the firearms they wish to purchase.”

I trust that Trump will veto this should it make it through the House and Senate.

That case has made the rounds of media outlets lately. The reporters are never clear whether the girl’s physical passport is intact or burned as implied in one tweet.

Burned it? A man would be done, but, again, we have a different standard in this country for women who are stupid, especially attractive young women who are stupid … cough … Ocasio-Cortez … cough.

The kid needs a genetic test. God knows if he’s even hers. He looks completely different, possibly inbred.

Good forage this afternoon. Stopped by an estate sale, and ended up spending $200 on camping gear, tools, some preps, and garage type stuff.

    -colman camp oven, NIB, $10.
-rolling gas cans, 11 gal, $30
-lots more little bits and pieces for camping and cars that all cost more than you’d think

It was 50% off day, and stuff was finally moving. This particular seller always prices high, so there isn’t much point going on the first day.

now to do some work in the driveway….

If I read correctly, the latest ISIS bride has a child after having three husbands shot. Her father was here as a diplomat when she was born, so, not an anchor baby. Green card? I don’t know but she went to Syria, got married and supposedly slit a few throats herself…. and now that ISIS is pretty much done wants to come back to Alabama. I don’t think so…. But call me a hater if you wish.

I probably have a week of noise mixed up in my head.

And wasn’t McCabe just on TV to sell his book and talking about how they were planning how to use Amendment 25 to oust Trump? Treason, much?

But hey! Look! Trump tried to hang a black (and gay for extra hate points!) guy in Chicago when it was about 9F.

  13. paul says:

Nice! I need to replace my camp stove. I’m pretty sure that when running one burner that there is not suppose to be flames around the other burner’s valve. I need to double check but I think it’s all crimped… nothing to tighten.

I did buy it in ’86. Maybe they just go bad sitting in the original box out in the shed.

I haven’t seen any Girl Scout cookie sales here. They would be a huge morale boost, a symbol that things might someday return to normal. Meanwhile, the whole area is still in crisis mode. Buildings are being razed, some of them rebuilt. Of the 15 houses on my street, 3 still have tarped roofs, and we live in one of the less affected areas. Tens of thousands of people are probably going to lose their temporary living situation once the summer tourist season gets here. The alternative will be for their rent to triple, and it’s typically already much higher than it was in September 2017.

  15. Nick Flandrey says:

    wow, how quickly we forget…

How is your personal situation at home and work? Didn’t your whole department get cut?

(same thing happened with Houston, we still had people in shelters and the public attention had moved on.)

Fort Myers was still pretty torn up in places when we went last July (2018). Irma rolled through in Sept. 2017.

I am ok with this. If cops have to wear body cams then politicians should also.

“The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that just launched an Israeli moon lander will make some more history soon, if all goes according to plan.”

“The Thursday night (Feb. 21) liftoff of the Beresheet lunar lander — which in April will try to become the first privately funded craft to touch down on the moon — and two other satellites was the third spaceflight for this particular Falcon 9’s first stage. The booster came back to Earth for yet another landing Thursday and will be prepped for a fourth mission, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said.”

    This is so cool.

Good to hear from you again. My guess is that it will take a minimum of two years for your region to recover. The Houston area is returning to normal post Harvey but still showing effects a year and a half later. I would say that 98% (SWAG !) of those people returning to their homes are back in them. I have no idea how many people are not returning to their homes though, it is a significant percentage, maybe a quarter (another SWAG !) of those flooded.

Success would push the US closer to on demand access to space out of Launch Complex 39 at Kennedy as long as a Falcon and X37B are around.

The biggest obstacle at the facility is NASA. Fortunately, 39B was rebuilt “clean” and Orbital has one of the high bays in the VAB, free of SLS tooling.
