Month: January 2019

Fri. Jan. 11, 2019 – another week gone, and we’re just getting started

64F and 40%RH… hmm, not sure I trust that number, but if true, hooray.

There’s a truism in construction that everything costs more and takes longer than you think. Trump knows this in his bones. His enemies and even his supporters don’t seem to know it.

It takes a while to get the vast machinery moving, but once moving it takes another large effort to get it stopped. Our .gov and .mil are both famous examples of how that inertia works. This is normally a good thing. It protects from spurious changes and ‘flavor of the month’ policy making.

Our country has been moving toward socialism and tyranny since the 20’s at least, why expect we can undo that overnight? The real question is ‘can we push on the rock long enough to get it moving, and keep it from immediately rolling back and crushing us?’

Some very interesting thought developing in some dark corners of the web about the whole process, when it started, and who’s been pushing it. Timothy Leary was born in 1920…and worked at Harvard…

Extra credit for remembering the question “Are you a Harvard or a Yale man?”

Thur. Jan. 10, 2019 – It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it

64F and 40%RH. Stunningly dry.

Getting the Christmas decor in just jumped up my list. I turned most of it off last night. I was the last in the neighborhood. I’ve been waiting for it to dry off before putting it back in the garage attic.

I try to put my political thoughts in the comments area and leave the post for more concrete stuff. But. I was struck by these two headlines.

” Deutsche Bank To Spend About $2 Billion On Bonuses, Despite “Cuts”

“Deutsche Bank has a severe talent loss problem and this bonus cut will exacerbate the problem. Focusing on top performers is not new…”

–these would be the ‘top performers’ whose efforts resulted in the bank losing a large chunck of it’s own stock market valuation, while “The bank’s revenue for 2018 is slated to be the lowest since the 2008 financial crisis and the article notes that the bank’s fourth quarter was “negatively affected by police raids on the lender’s headquarters in November””.

And this one:

“Nancy Pelosi Says 66,000 Opioid Deaths and 25,000 Illegal Alien Murders Is a “Manufactured Crisis””

–this would be the same Nancy Pelosi that dances in the blood of every shooting victim when she wants to justify eliminating one of our Constitutional rights- manufacturing a crisis where none exists.

Bonuses for failure- paid with other people’s money.
Your death, or the death of a loved on- just not more important than scoring political points.

We are on our own.

Wed. Jan. 9, 2019 – 19-19 – not as satisfying as 2020

56F and 70%RH. That’s almost bone dry considering the last few weeks…

Missed the TV spectacle last night, played a game with the family instead. Haven’t read much coverage, so it must not have been very controversial.

I’ll be headed to Austin for a pickup today and off line for much of the day.

Got a few of my items off my list yesterday, but not enough, so I’ll roll them over to today, and tomorrow, and Friday…

In the mean time, “talk amongst yourselves.”

Tues. Jan. 8, 2019 – busy day

Writing this early, so I hope we don’t get the rain NOAA is forecasting for the TX gulf coast. Had dreary and warm until afternoon, then it got pretty nice for a while yesterday afternoon.

Kids go back to school today. Feels like they’ve been out FOREVER. I’m sure they will be difficult in the morning, so I’m putting this up on time delay so I have some extra time for wrangling.

I got so little sleep, I decided not to drive today. I’ll do local pickups and catch Austin on Wednesday. That should have me out of the house most of the day. We’ll see.

It’ll be interesting to see what Trump has to say later tonight. I just can’t believe Pelosi’s open border shtick is playing well with the unions and blue collar workers that are the Dems traditional base. They’ve got to see the effects of cheap labor first hand, and while the Dems were making the right mouth sounds, they could convince themselves it would be alright, but with Pelosi saying things like NOT ONE DOLLAR for a wall, how can anyone fool themselves anymore? I can’t believe this is where she chose to make her stand, but I guess she must be feeling full of oats, or something.

Change is coming, for good or ill.

Get prepped!

Mon. Jan. 7, 2019 – feels weird

60F and damp, but not raining yet…

Really doesn’t feel like a new year yet. I guess once the kids are back in school it will hit me. That’s tomorrow by the way. Still home today.

Wife is working, so I better get her breakfast ready 🙂

Sun. Jan. 6, 2019 – First week gone

46F and sunny. Yesterday warmed up a bit, and was sunny with a clear blue sky for most of the day. Really nice.

Well, the first week of 2019 is gone. I got no prepping done. No garden, nothing. I did do some stuff around the house.

I re-aimed one of the security cams to get more coverage of the street and the approach to my house. On our “Neighbors Night Out” the Constable’s Deputies who patrol our subdivision asked that we provide more coverage of the street if possible. While I don’t want .gov surveilling my street, I don’t mind if my neighbors do. If it comes to the new stazi, well, some of them disappeared in the middle of the night too. Listening to the scanner the last two days, the police are able to use citizen video to track down and apprehend serious offenders. It takes a lot of effort, and it should. It should not be used trivially. Even just a Ring or equivalent doorbell cam catches the approach to your door, people passing by, and vehicles on the street.

I did a bit of maintenance around the house, cutting back some tree branches, and re-leveling some flagstones in a walkway. I’d like to pick up some of the branches and logs my neighbors have set out for heavy trash, but don’t know if I’ll get the chance to drive around before they finally pick up. Pickup was supposed to be the weekend before Christmas, but they are delayed. There is a lot of debris out that still looks like Harvey flood damage. The volume of debris and heavy trash is probably higher than normal. It sure looks like it.

Sweden got an Ebola scare, just a bit earlier than predictions. Thankfully it was not ebola, but it should be an eye opener. Africa’s problems won’t stay in Africa. I’d suggest being ready to spend 45 days in your house under self quarantine as a minimum goal for pandemic preparedness. That means being ready to earn money and care for your kids too. Probably not a bad idea to look at your PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) situation. Use any bleach that is more than a year old to wash the deck, sidewalk, and driveway, and refresh your stores. If you can’t smell the ‘bleach’ smell, it’s lost its potency. The closest I expect to get to real zombies is some sort of pandemic like ebola breaking out in the first world.

With the incoming House democrats and extremists look for prices on guns and ammo to rise. You did take advantage of the lull to stock up didn’t you? If not, you might want to consider it. If you’ve been thinking about getting your state’s version of a CHL, get off your duff and do it. Get some additional training, and then actually carry. Get comfortable with carrying.

Work on personal fitness too. My goal for the year is to lose some of what accreted around my waist over the last two years, and to work on flexibility, balance, and a bit of strength. Nothing drastic, but I need to stop jamming sugar into my pie hole every night. I need to do a bit of stretching and something for balance, like Tai Chi Chuan, or yoga. It would be nice to swim and rock climb with the kids this year. I’ll start with some stretching at home, and maybe a bit of form, while I wait for all the other New Year’s Resolution goobers to get out of the gyms…..

Hard times are coming. They always are. Sometimes they actually get here. I look at the situation in Venezuela as an example of how quickly (and yet without a specific incident or tipping point) things can change. Five years or less was all it took. Most of their issues were brought on by their ruling class and destructive politics. Do you think ours will do any better?

Robert thought we were headed for a slow decline. I’m arguing that we’re already well into it. I look around and see scavengers everywhere. Ordinary middle class people are dumpster diving, and doing youtube channels about it. Scrap buyers are springing up everywhere to service all the people out picking thru garbage for scrap. Lots of people are becoming ‘resellers’ (like me) and scouring the used marketplace for something they can resell. And the kicker is- they ARE reselling which means other people are buying. They are looking to that secondary market because they can’t or don’t want to spend the money for ‘new’ from a traditional source. Think about what that means in a consumption driven economy.

[aside- first it was the Cash for Gold and Payday Loans storefronts. Then the check cashers, and Car Title Loan places. Now it’s the scrap metal buyers. In other words, people have already sold their gold, leveraged their second biggest asset, no longer have checks to cash, and now are picking up scrap…]

We tolerate a degree of violence, filth, homelessness, public disease, and drug use that is simply astonishing when you take a step back. San Diego and LA wash the streets with bleach in an attempt to stop the spread of serious diseases. San Francisco has needles and feces littering their streets, and NOT just in a Bowery area, but everywhere. Houston has giant tent cities downtown under the freeways. Cali has mile after mile of tent city. MS13 is literally CHOPPING OFF HEADS in NYFC! Long Island for Pete’s sake! But NYC is more concerned with bodegas selling loose untaxed cigarettes and oversized sodas than the serious crimes and gang violence.

The decline has started. Compare five years ago with today, then extrapolate five years hence. What do you need to do today to make that survivable?

Sat. Jan. 5, 2019 – nice day!

If you like 48F and sunny, that is. Beats rain, and maybe I’ll be able to get some decor down and put away.

Late start today. Kids are sneaky little ninjas when they think they can watch some unauthorized TV. Loud as 10 people in a bar most of the time, but now I know they can be quiet and go 10 minutes without fighting. Silly kids, should never have tipped their hands.

Speaking of kids, we’ve got a basketball game today at the Y. Noisy, crowded, and gun free…. joy. And a great example of prog thinking, membership cost varies with income, but facility and programs are the same for all.

I better get started if I don’t want to go in my ‘jammies’.

Fri. Jan. 4, 2019 – appointments today, and kids at home

36F and wet out. That feels pretty dang cold BTW.

Up early because it is family dentist day, YEA! Or not. We’re all in pretty good shape so there shouldn’t be any uncomfortable surprises, nor expensive ones, but I’ll touch wood just in case.

Making sure your health care is up to date is an important prep. Don’t let things fester. Literally.

I guess we’ve got a couple of days to see what the world and markets do now that we’ve put Nancy and a bunch of haters in the House. Anyone think we’ll get a new Camelot? No? Didn’t think so. Pity that time travel doesn’t exist. Imagine a world where Teddy died in a ditch alongside Mary Jo. No change in immigration policy from europeans to third worlders for one. That would have a HUGE impact. Now take out Bill Ayers and eliminate that long game. Those two edits alone might have been enough to save what we had. Maybe interfere with Woodward and Bernstein just enough to prevent the toxic erosion of faith in government, and creating the idea that the activist was the highest form of journalism….

You see Johnny, one person CAN make a difference.

Thur. Jan. 3, 2019 – I forgot we’re in a shutdown….

45F and drizzle. Another dreary day.

A small reminder to give thanks for a roof over my head, indoor plumbing, and central heat…

Hmmm, apple is down almost 10% on some probably honest remarks (that the rumors had been talking about for a while now), construction layoffs are high, Tesla down as it admits it’s having trouble making and selling cars, Ford and GM have previously cut outlooks, luxury real estate is way down (why sell at huge discounts unless you need the money or see bigger opportunity elsewhere?), a whole bunch of the smartest guys in the room have seen their hedge funds crash, and a whole lot of other portents are becoming undeniable. The economy is crashing, at least the money side of it, and the money is what makes it all work. These guys are NOT gonna sit idly by. I don’t see T doing any motorcades any time soon, and he better keep the family close too.

and CHINA landed a rover on the moon!
