75F and wet, forecast calls for pain.
OMG this scratch hurts. I was finally able to sleep when the meds kicked in after an hour. Woke up, didn’t feel bad until opening the eye. OMG 11!!!111!!
Hard to read, or do anything. So naturally I have a full plate.
I’m gonna try and cancel the pickup so I can eat painkillers.

First to post finally!
I feel for you on the eye injury. I have done it twice and it can really hurt.
First time was when I was a kid working construction. I got an eye full of wet cement. The foreman washed as much as he could out with a hose and ran me in to the hospital. I had to wear an eye patch for a few weeks. The bad part of that is the injured eye follows the good eye, so every time you move your good eye, the bad one sings out.
I don’t remember any lost time except the day it happened. Just went back to work the next day like normal.
The 2nd one I did sounds minor. I stuck an eye with a pine needle while mowing. I had on glasses but it got me anyway. That was as bad as the cement and left a flap. For probably 6 months, every morning I opened my eye the flap would be disturbed and hurt like crazy.
None of this compares to a friend of mine who lost an eye on a ski trip. He crashed and knocked his eye right out of the socket. It was hanging on his cheek when his brother got to him. He said all the adults just gave him a horrified look and went on down the hill until the ski patrol showed up. Not a good vacation!
I have had scratches a couple of times. They are painful, uncomfortable, and make it impossible to open the eye. Lots of tearing.
Get to an ophthalmologist immediately. Call one and explain what happened. They will get you in immediately. I got chewed out by my doctor because I did not call his office on a Saturday and waited until Monday morning. I told I did not think it was an emergency, he stated otherwise. Antibiotics, steroids, and an eye patch for a couple of days.
Don’t mess with your eyes. Get into a doctor immediately. And you will find the eye medicine, ounce for ounce, is some of the most expensive medicine on earth. Worth more than it’s weight in gold.
Headed to the Dr now…

My one experience was as a teenager. In a haunted house, of all places, my sister ran into me in fear. Hurt like the dickens, and I needed a new pair of glasses. It could have been worse.
Here’s hoping you did no lasting damage. Eyes are incredibly important.
88F and sunny yesterday.
43F and raining today. Not much of a Fall this year.
Penny walked out the door and made a u-turn. Missy looked out and backed up.
I scratched an eye once. Cutting down a cedar tree… it hit the fence, rolled, and got me. Hurt like crazy.
Added: Just went for a coffee refill. It’s now 40F and over half an inch in the rain gauge.
As usual, Ray’s advice is right. I would add that for the first couple days an anesthetic drop can do wonders to promote comfort. I have had many eye surgeries, and know. Eyes are incredibly tough, but will expire if pushed too far. Prompt correct care is essential. Hope you get a good doc. Best wishes. Oh, canceling heavy work is good. That safe can wait a few days.
@Nick
I feel your pain. I’ve had many corneal scratches and abrasions beginning with getting poked in the eye with a pool cue when I was a kid. very important to keep the eye closed and covered because corneal cells reproduce very quickly and just the act of blinking can wash the new ones away.
I would like to express my appreciation to whoever mentioned the 1965 movie, _Crack in the World_. I happened to come across a nice copy on yesterday’s lazy Sunday and found it a very good bit of sci-fi, and a very good bit of movie making in and of itself. Of course it always boils down to the writing¡ Given a good story you do not need flashy special effects, or stylistic Hollywood camera work with edits every 3 seconds. I miss the old days of miniatures…
I remember seeing Crack in the theater. Love Dana Andrews. Now I’ll have to acquire the movie.
Mr. Nick, take care of that eye. Talk Like A Pirate Day has passed.
Home. 3mm scratch right across the center of my eye.
Contact lens as a ‘bandage’, drops for pain (but not really, as they don’t prescribe anesthetic drops and that’s the only really effective thing.) They did an extra drop to help for as long as possible. Antibiotic drops continue…
Body does NOT like Tramadol.
Inch and half of rain in last hour, still coming down, more later too.
Now I’m going to bed.
Thanks for the concern and well wishes,
n
Results of my colonoscopy. Pre-cancerous polyp was removed. Will need to have the procedure done again in five years.
@ray, all things considered, that is an excellent result!

Congrats ! And thanks for reminding me that it has been 8 years for me. But I was clean last time (was also the first time).
I having my two Chicago sisters fly here, JWA, Santa Ana, and back for Thanksgiving. Is it financially best to have them make reservations ASAP?
@cowboy slim- yes, advance rates are almost always cheaper than later rates, but typically don’t change much until the last couple of weeks before departure.
Thanksgiving is a VERY BUSY time to fly and they will want to book early, and get assigned seats. Be sure to add any baggage, early boarding, or assigned seat charges when comparing prices as each airline is very different in their policies.

In the spring, in an uncharacteristic fit of spring cleaning, I removed the screens from the living room windows and gave them a good going over. Then I couldn’t re-install them. I tried for hours. Tried from inside and outside, from top and bottom with no joy. I spent time on YouTube looking at countless videos of how to install screens but none were like the screens I have. Mine have no springs or clips or pins or anything. The weather quickly got hot and humid and I forgot all about them. Till this week when the weather suddenly turned cool / cold and I want to open a window or two. I am stumped. Any suggestions?
Eleven years ago I was in the same situation. Clean and told to come back in 10 years. Missed by a year. I was hoping for clean but I guess not. Research has indicated that any such polyps are very slow growing and coming back in five years is considered OK. Colon cancer is one of those that if caught early is almost 100% curable with proper treatment.
Unpleasant as the pre-exam routine is it is worthwhile in end. (Snicker). Drinking two quarts of fluid in two hours is difficult. Last dose was at 12:00 AM (midnight) and had to be completed by 2:00 AM. Not a lot of sleep that night as drinking another two quarts was slower than the first two quarts. Then the wait for inevitable. What little sleep I got was over two folded towels over the critical area.
The anesthesia was remarkable. Gave me something that made me drowsy, rolled over on my side, scooted up on the table, and boom, totally. Next I remember was being told to wake up, electrodes were gone, butt was clean, and I was in a different room. After a couple of minutes I felt no drowsiness and was basically functional. Much different that first time I had it done.
Do the screens just slide up into a groove at the top, put in, and dropped down into a groove on the bottom?
My screens go in sideways. I forget how, it was a “let’s try this” and that’s all. Double hung windows that tilt in so removing screens isn’t a big “need”.
The kitchen window is a different brand and has sliding latches on the screen.
I just tried one window. There is a spring of some kind on the right side while looking out. I don’t know if the spring is part of the screen or part of the window frame. At 42F and drizzling rain, today isn’t my day to figure this out.
Call me a hater. 🙂 I’m cool.
Ray said “Do the screens just slide up into a groove at the top, put in, and dropped down into a groove on the bottom? ”
I have seen windows like that. Snug fitting…
Tomorrow is going to be something. Annoying is a good word for a start.
I’m chauffeuring a friend to the hospital for a rooter-rooter job on his prostrate. The original plan was get there at 9:30 and leave at 1:30. So, no breakfast for anyone.
No problem, I’ll wander off and spend the wait time to get some Taco Bell crispy tacos for breakfast. Quit laughing. I like the local Taco Bell. Or maybe an Egg McMuffin from McD’s. I’ll find something. Then go to Tractor Supply for cat and dog feed. Home Depot is next door to TS so I can look for a faucet that doesn’t cost $13 bucks for a $2.95 part and also pick up some foam pipe insulation. I’m not sure I need any pipe insulation but I haven’t crawled under the house lately. You never know what the hell the dogs have decided to chew on. Then hit the HEB for a few things. Canned tuna in oil and beer. Maybe, max, two hours of shopping if I walk slow.
So they call him this morning and for whatever reason his appt. is changed to 10:30. Which pushes his release time to 2:30. Call it 3 or 4 PM. Because 2:30 is assuming they get to work on him at 10:30. Oh…. and for some reason I’m supposed to stay there the entire time. He didn’t say if they were providing lunch. I assume not.
Without any food from right about now, 7pm Central, all day with naught but a cup of coffee, you don’t want to be around me. Trust me. Crabby is the nice word. I was born October 30 and missed being a witch by one day.
Nope. No sitting in a waiting room all day for me. I’m going to run my errands.
Anyway. The rooter-rooter prostrate thing isn’t they way it use to be…. with a couple three days in the hospital peeing blood. Now they use a laser. Not sure how the mechanical part works but it’s about an hour of laser beams and go home and pull the catheter out the next day. No follow up visit needed. Trippy.
That is how mine work.

added– screens not prostate!
wrt no food, I always try to have a couple of the costco fig bars and one or two of the Epic Meat bars in my cars and in my little EDC bag. I’m not good missing meals.

If anyone cares, it’s still 42F and my rain gauge is showing a bit over 2.5 inches for the day.
The dogs finally went out when I went to feed the cats and chickens. Missy pottied. Penny, I don’t know…. she tends to go further for potty. The chickens were all in their coop and raising hell. Perhaps they’ll lay in their nest boxes today. Five chickens and not an egg for a couple of weeks. But I hear their just laid an egg fussing.
Good times.
Well. It just started to rain like heck again. It’s good, water the trees.

You win the Internet today. Bonus points added for scratched cornea. Because OUCH!!!!

Minor, except for the victim, but here you go, right on schedule:

Most non-Africans could match that much of their DNA if not more to Native Americans.
Warren just proved that she was more white than previously thought.
The media were set up and played. Right now, a lot of damage control is underway at the Times, CNN, and Post.

The current state of the economy in Seattle proper is the end result of more than a decade of work by Paul Allen to rejuvenate the city core. Amazon is just the tenant and would have bolted for the suburbs years ago if Allen hadn’t laid the groundwork for redevelopment of Lake Union.
I wonder what will happen to the Trailblazers and the Seahawks. Unlike baseball, the NBA and NFL prefer to deal with one person as clear majority owner.
Bed time for me, I’ll see y’all in the morning.

Heaven forfend a Capitalist could add to the common weal! Yet he did, in a quiet (except for that damn Sci-Fi and Music Museum) fashion. Even if his interest was partially motivated by greed, he saw the bigger picture and his own place in it. I kind of like the fact that he and Gates and Buffett jointly decided to give most of their fortune away upon their departure, even though the foundations they created consist of nothing more than a another layered network of paper pushing bureaucrats! I wish any one of them had guaranteed the overhead cost to not exceed 15% of the capital. Taxes, pensions, parking included.
Not to mention health insurance!
Case in point: Epsom salts are about $7.00 per kg. A bottle of bisacodyl tablets is probably about the same. A few TBS of the ole MgSO4, a couple tabs of the bisacodyl; wash, rinse and repeat and Bob’s your uncle. On the gripping hand (pun intended) Holly Golightly is like $100.00 or more…
I have had two colonoscopies in my life and both times I Did It My Way. No general, either. 3 mg Ativan IV… I like to watch and ask questions.
What a stud. But I really want to know how you got your head so far around you could look at your ass. 🙂

I have mixed feelings about mPOP (or whatever they call it these days), but the restoration of Cinerama was something people still don’t fully understand or appreciate beyond that is where Bill Gates sees “Star Wars” movies.
