Thur. Sept. 27, 2018 – already? yep.

By on September 27th, 2018 in Random Stuff

A cool 70F and drippy this am…

And it’s already Thursday again. Jeez. And I got new stuff added to my list. Dishwasher needs replacement at the rent house. It’s probably 20 years old and a latch has failed. Seems a shame to not to just fix the latch, but it’s 20 years old and not a particularly good one anyway. Depending on the actual latch, it could be 1/4 the cost of replacing the whole unit. Le sigh…

https://www.zerohedge.com/ is full of doom this morning, and confirmation bias…..

Well, this list ain’t gonna check box itself….

Maybe fix the latch for the short term. Then after 6 months or a year, if the new tenants look like a good long term option, replace it with a new one as a “reward.”

  2. Nick Flandrey says:

That is not a bad idea. I’ll be meeting them for the first time today…

It was a cool 70f at commute time but it’s now 57f and drizzling. No complaints from me.

Still only 74F and overcast. Nice change. Maybe fall is here.

59º and clear, with little wind. It will be a good day to get outside at lunchtime. (Now).

I’m paying as little attention to the circus in DC as possible. I’m just waiting to see if it will be a Thomas vote or a Bork (not) vote. In either case, the comity of the institution is long gone.

I now expect Collins to fold to #MeToo. Gotta keep her fem creds up. Murkowski will probably fold, too. They’ll say there is too much damning “evidence”, so another FBI investigation is needed. The FBI will simply say there is no evidence. It won’t matter since Dumbo’s get what they want.

Maybe one of them will vote yes and Pence can swoop in.

I’m not watching the circus, just reading blurbs as they come out. A Kavanaugh confirmation puts a nail in Ginsburgs coffin (pun). BTW I read the old crone is firing up the #MeToo crowd. Yeah, she’s a justice on the highest court. You would think evidence meant something. Nope. Political cow.

  10. mediumwave says:

The witch trial is currently on…

    Adjourned for lunch.

The Dem Senators are predictably grandstanding.

The questioning by the surrogate investigator brought in by the Rep Senators would be more effective were it not sliced and diced into five minute segments (but that’s no doubt done on purpose.)

So far my opinion of CBF’s credibility hasn’t changed one bit.

  11. MrAtoz says:

Fox News’ Chris Wallace on Dr. Christine Blasey Ford: “This was extremely emotional, extremely raw, and extremely credible”

So…guilty? I’ve always thought Wallace was a Dumbo/MeToo/SJW/BLM. An emotional story is jackshit. Dumbos claim “this isn’t a trial” so he’s guilty until proven innocent. Echoed by more and more Dumbo Senators. The Constitution is just birdcage liner to them. The Redumbos need to get their shit together and if K isn’t confirmed, make Dumbos pay dearly for it. tRump would be behind them. Is that a sexual micro-aggression?

  12. Greg Norton says:

    Murkowski will probably fold, too.

Again, Murkowski is the reason we have Kavanagh.

If she votes ‘no’ it will be due to her own daddy issues. Anything to avenge the father unit’s loss to … Sarah Palin (oh, God, no).

  13. MrAtoz says:

Dumbos are using the “Rules For Radicals” ploy of just saying the same thing over and over. There is another *anonymous* letter the Dumbos introduced into the record saying K *gang raped* her in the back of a car. No name, date, location, just K was there. That backs up the RFR ploy specifically to get Collins and Murky to roll over. I have no doubt Frankensteins’s lackys are putting this shit out.

  14. MrAtoz says:

LMAO! Frankenstein invited *Alyssa Milano* to the hearing! Everywhere this SJW loser goes means complete Dumbo loss! Kavanaugh is confirmed thanks to Hollyweird.

  15. mediumwave says:

Can’t tell if spectators are present in the peanut gallery.

If so, will there be a sudden (unexpected!) eruption of violence when Kavanaugh makes his appearance?

  16. MrAtoz says:

lol! Sheila Jackoff Lee shows up and hands Ford’s attorneys an *envelope*. What’s in it? Another anonymous statement? Paycheck to the attorneys so they don’t *fumble* their client’s lies? A sworn statement from Alyssa Milano that she believes Ford? Gingsburg’s death certificate to fire up Dumbos?

The Redumbos should come up with their own anonymous statements that BJ Klinton was seen raping Ford. Bill Cosby?

I am actually saddened by this cartoon as I am beginning to wonder if our culture is actually headed this direction. Somehow, a battle has started between men and women in the USA and it is threatening to become a war. Our culture is getting sick. I know what the solution is but not many people want to hear it.

  18. mediumwave says:

I know what the solution is but not many people want to hear it.

One possible outcome is described here, in the final paragraph:

“Spreading the false message that most or all men are dangerous is a setback not only for men’s rights, but also for women’s rights. If a prudish society decides that women must be “protected” by not being allowed in the presence of males, most work opportunities for women will disappear.”

Yep, and purdah won’t be far behind.

  19. MrAtoz says:

I’m sure Islamifuk countries are laughing their asses off at the US right now. “We our wimmenz in line!”

  20. SteveF says:

most work opportunities for women will disappear

Already happening, at least to the extent that mentorships and mixed-sex senior-junior work relationships are reduced. I don’t know any numbers about how much they’re reduced from some nominal high-water mark, but I do know that women are complaining about it.

(With the note that no matter the event, it is not difficult to find some women complaining about it.)

When I worked at HEB as Cash Controller, the office had two cameras and the business center had another. There were a couple of times where all that needed saying was “smile at the camera” and any kind of flirty girl stuff stopped like a car hitting a brick wall.

Never mind I’m the age of their fathers. I don’t look my age. I’ll teach my job to anyone. Heck, I’ve had customers hitting on me. Is that normal? I’ve never tried to pick up someone while they are at work. Maybe I’m the weirdo.

I learned at one of my first jobs that “you don’t get your meat where you get your bread” and when I saw the rule broken all sorts of stuff got crazy. Sometimes quite entertaining, too.

  22. paul says:

No mowing today. This morning my back informed me that if I got on the mower today I would be crawling for a few days.

The weather is almost perfect today. Blue sky, a few thin clouds, humidity down, and I’ve only have 3 skeeters get me. 57F this morning, high of 81F. House temp is 73F with a few windows open. Nice time of the year….

  23. lynn says:

@Ray, how was your MRI ? I had two of them for my heart surgery. They were a total blast. Not.

  24. paul says:

I’m making a mess tonight. It’s cool enough today to run the oven. I have chicken nuggets. Not great nuggets but edible. I don’t have any french fries. Rats. Oh, wait, Nick has the rats. Pizza sounds good.

But pizza or a bag of frozen fries from the grocery store isn’t happening. Too lazy / sore to drive to town.

Ok, 2 quart Corning-ware dish. Cornflower Blue, of course! A can of Chef Boyardee ravioli spread out. A big handful of shredded mozzarella. And another handful to make sure I have enough cheese. A layer of pepperoni slices. Some Parmesan just because and black pepper. Another can of ravioli spread on top and into a 325F oven with 30 minutes on the timer. Until bubbly. Or the smoke thing happens.

So…. sorta like lasagna? Without ricotta?

We’ll see. I like all of the parts. Not a fan of pull tab cans…. it seems that when stuff goes to pull tabs you get less content with more juice and sugar.

  25. Nick Flandrey says:

The pull tab cans seem less sturdy too. They must be, as the metal is scored thinner.

Ran all over town today. Home to take out pizza.

Got lots to do and little time to do it.

Yup. And I am trying to hold back right now. I do not want to offend Jenny and any other ladies who visit on the board by continuously harping on the false accusations that are being made on a good man. He is certainly not a perfect man (there was only one of those) but he is a good man. Other good men and good ladies are watching this now and trying to decide if they are willing to spend some of their time in the barrel.

There were several times during his initial statement that it seemed that Kavanaugh was going to break into tears–and who would blame him? It was heartbreaking to watch, but it was inspiring to see him fighting back during the subsequent grilling by the despicable Dems.

And good for Lindsey Graham for calling out the contemptible behavior of his (D) colleagues on the committee!

Speaking of despicable Dems, Kamala Harris and Corey “Spartacus” Booker once again revealed themselves to be real pieces of work.

  28. MrAtoz says:

And good for Lindsey Graham for calling out the contemptible behavior of his (D) colleagues on the committee!

I found that particularly refreshing. Graham is usually a wishy washy Rino. He also made a statement before the hearing saying he’s voting yes on K. I hope Collins and Murkowski were paying attention.

Number one son returned from Mountain View last night. He flew out on Monday from Houston Hobby to Dallas to San Diego to San Jose. He left at noon and got to San Jose at 11 pm where he got a rental car and drove to his hotel in Mountain View. He had five interviews at G on Tuesday including a lunch interview. He flew back yesterday on a direct flight from San Jose to Houston Hobby. They told him that HR would be in touch with him in 2 weeks to 3 months about the job.

He talked with the interviewers about housing. They told him that one bedroom apartments a couple of blocks away from campus are going for $3,000/month. They said the 10 mile away apartments are $2,500/month now. Wow.

ADD: You know, if I had a business in Silicon Valley, I would move it elsewhere. That place is crazy crowded.

  31. Greg Norton says:

Didn’t someone here speculate that Musk and Tesla were about done?

    Ponzi. Always has been.

I saw Toyota reintroduced what is, more or less, a next generation Matrix for 2019. They used to produce those in the Tesla factory; they will do so again … very soon.

  32. Ray Thompson says:

    how was your MRI

Just got back home. Spent some time at the son’s house as he is only 30 miles from the VA facility. Drove and dropped the wife off and went to the procedure then returned.

I spent a total of 80 minutes in the machine. Hated it. I got trapped in a culvert on the farm running an irrigation water line under the road. Uncle yelled, brother laughed. I was panicked and about to pass out from the fear. Uncle finally got a neighbor to help get a rope around my feet, cut and removed the irrigation pipe for more room and pulled me out.

That machine reminds me of that incident and it was tough controlling my fear. I had them place a cloth over my eyes so that I could not see. I could feel my body getting warm where the MRI was taking place. Not hot, just warmer than usual. Imagination? I don’t think so. Between the noise, the discomfort from being squeezed in, and the closed in feeling I was struggling the last 15 minutes.

I probably won’t know the results for several weeks. I hope the information gathered provides some more information to get my disability rating increased.

Guy that was in the machine before freaked out before he finished. Squeezed the “QUIT NOW” bulb to stop the machine. He said he was done, get me out, not doing this anymore or again. Said that a couple of times before they got him out. He was covered in sweat and had soaked the MRI clothes (basically paper) that they have you put on before the procedure.

This is my third MRI, and was the most extensive, and the longest. I hope I never have to do it again.

  33. Nick Flandrey says:

I don’t like being in tight spaces or being trapped, but I don’t mind the mri. In fact, I usually fall asleep. CT scanner too. Earplugs in, sandbag me or put rolled up towels in place to keep me still when I nod off.

I can’t imagine what it would be like having your past experience Ray. I’m glad I’m ok in the machine.

For people like you and that other guy, would the open, stand up machine be a viable option? Seems like the very thing it was invented for….

  34. Greg Norton says:

Yup. And I am trying to hold back right now. I do not want to offend Jenny and any other ladies who visit on the board by continuously harping on the false accusations that are being made on a good man.

I don’t mean to offend anyone, but I was an 80s kid who saw a lot of weird behavior among my age group after Jerry Pournelle’s “Cultural Weapons of Mass Destruction” hit the suburbs. A low yield nuclear weapon would have done less damage than basic cable and, specifically, MTV did to Gen X in the early 80s.

The 80s truly started when Tom Cruise got away with the “Risky Business” final line, “My name is Joel Goodson. I deal in human fulfillment.”

I remember a great prediction from an otherwise throw-away Dennis Hopper flick circa late 80s, “The 90s are gonna make the 60s look like the 50s.”

Almost, but the prediction is more true about the 2010s.

The whole planet wants to move to Palo Alto and send their kids to Stanford.

Though a lot of families all over the world seem to be accepting a consolation prize — mortgaging everything they own to get their Number One Sons into homes and jobs in Austin.

    This about sums it up:
    https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-kavanaugh-stakes-1538088433

Rule of law and burden of proof matter. The constitution matters.

I don’t know that Kavanaugh will be good or bad on the court. But it is the President’s prerogative to nominate, and the Senate’s job to advise & consent. Absent some compelling failure, the vote should be 99-1 for or 1-99 against, every doggone time. (Somebody from the opposition party should always dissent.)

  38. Ray Thompson says:

For people like you and that other guy, would the open, stand up machine be a viable option

I don’t know if the VA has such a machine within 1,000 miles. Costs money and we are dealing with the VA and the limited funding from congress to compensate people for serving the country. Such service most members of Congress have yet to accomplish.
