Mon. Sept. 17, 2018 – jeez, same old stuff

By on September 17th, 2018 in Random Stuff

71F and saturated this morning, here in Houston. Must be fall.

A quick scan of headlines shows just the same stuff as always.

I’m headed out to do a pickup today. I’m just hoping it doesn’t rain all day.

It’s good to be home, but there is even more work to be done. Entropy never sleeps.

Guys and gals, this is why we prep….

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6175377/Entire-North-Carolina-city-cut-storm-Florence-floodwaters.html

So we don’t have to wait hours for 3 cases of soda (note the machete in the back of his truck), so we don’t get killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, so we don’t get electrocuted, so we don’t have to wait for the rescuers to come…..

    n

added- and look at the photo of the “canoe” and see why we avoid exposure to flood water.

  2. JLP says:

Good eye. I don’t think I would have seen the machete if you hadn’t pointed it out.

I’m grateful that I live where flooding is extremely unlikely. I’m >30 miles from the ocean and 235 feet above sea level. The nearest water is 35 feet of elevation below me and is just a trickle of a stream. The highest it has ever been is not even close to reaching my home. One less thing to worry about.

I’m glad to see that Trump mobilized the Guard and Marine Corps units. Those guys have got good deep water equipment.

I saw claims of 45 inches of rain over the weekend. Nobody can prepare very well for that other than getting to high ground (bugging out).

“Brett Kavanaugh DENIES being at the drunken teen party where professer claims she was sexually assaulted by him in the 1980s – as Supreme Court nomination again tells senators he is innocent and believes his accuser is ‘mixed up'”
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6176221/Professor-claims-Kavanaugh-sexually-assaulted-testify-Congress-says-attorney.html

At least Kavanaugh is fighting back. This is a he said, she said situation. And the other he said guy is denying it also.

And note that the not so dumbocrats waited until the last possible moment to release this accusation even though they have had it for months.

This is nothing but an over the top false accusation to try to sully the reputation of a good man. They did this to Robert Bork, they did this to Clarence Thomas. Worked in Bork’s case, did not work in Thomas’s case.

  5. lynn says:

From one of my neighbors, “Attacked outside my door”:

“SO YOU Punks think you’re tough because you jumped me?? Waited for me to be alone….in front of my own home??? I still handled all of you, left 3 of you on the ground laid out!! You’re lucky I don’t have any marks on my face. I have some on my arms and neck but so what!!!! I bet you didn’t expect me to swing back since it was 6 against one. I might be nice but I’m not too nice for this! Yeah, I’m not gonna lie I was getting tired of fighting and just wanted to give up and give you what you wanted, but I kept on swinging and made sure you got yours.. PUNKS!!!!! All I have to say is, you started this!”

“This exactly why I don’t go out anymore, it’s always something! What did I do to deserve this? Crazy mosquitos!!! That’s what you get!!! And yeah I really hate Mosquitos!!!!!!”

  6. JimB says:

@lynn, you had me going there for a moment. Good one! I also hate the little buggers because they like me.

We don’t have mosquitos here in the desert, although some claim to have seen one or two, but I think it might be some other similar-looking bug. When I mention this to some of my friends and relatives in other parts, they are incredulous.

    ‘Course we do have SNAKES!!

  7. lynn says:

If we ever move to another planet, I vote to leave the mosquitoes behind. I see no necessary need for them.

  8. JimB says:

@lynn, I agree we should leave mosquitoes behind. I did that! There are probably many other bugs we would like to leave behind, although some are useful. However, some of my best friends are snakes.

    https://www.amazon.com/Conflicted-Home-Survivalist-9-American/dp/0996696040/?tag=ttgnet-20

Book number nine of a ten book apocalyptic action series. I read the well printed and bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback. I will order the tenth book in the series soon. I do not know if there will be any more books in the series.

It has been almost a year since the EMP went off over the USA. There has been a military coup in the USA due to a lack of leadership. Very few people know and no one cares since the day to day maintenance of life without food, transportation, clean water, and electricity is so hard to deal with.

The USA military nuked the Chinese invasion fleet off the western coast of the USA. In response to that, the Chinese nuked various military bases around the USA, including MacDill AFB in Florida. Just a couple of hundred miles from our protagonists.

Russian and Cuban soldiers are prowling around Florida and the east coast causing mischief and such. Not knocking over the trashcans mischief but mortaring small villages mischief. Softening up for a possible invasion.

England, Europe, Australia, and India are sending food and necessities to the USA but there is no means of distribution. People are having to travel to the military bases in order to get food and fuel. Travel meaning foot and bicycle in most cases.

Stay out of the FEMA camps !

Yup, Anita Hill all over again. One hopes that Kavanaugh is affirmed anyway.

We deserve what we get when such obvious liars are allowed to publicly accuse good men or women. Soon, all of the good people will not even bother to allow themselves to be falsely accused in the public spotlight.

Home safe from another round trip to Austin…

Picked up about 70 solar panels. They are small, and I have to go thru and check condition, but they are Kyocera brand, and look great (for being used, and set up alongside the road for a couple of years.)

I guess I’ll have to learn about building a small array from these things.

    n

(also hit the Goodwill outlet (“the bins”) and bought 100 pounds of stuff for $100. The biggest items was a new open box genie garage door opener. Hey Mr Lynn, if you are up for it, Texas Law Shield is hosting a Range Day at a range on your side of town.

“In celebration of our new friendship with Texas Gun Club, Texas LawShield is hosting a range day from 10 AM to 6 PM this Saturday, September 22nd. Texas LawShield members will receive 50% off range fees and no initiation fees for new range memberships.

Come join Independent Program Attorney Emily Taylor for a day of fun at the highest rated shooting range in the Houston area.

Texas LawShield members are invited. If you aren’t a member, you can join at the event and take advantage of the benefits we have to offer.”

Yes, they will try (gently) to sell you their service. You should have it or something like it anyway. Their newsletter and website always have topical info, and they sponsor other classes (like the trauma first aid class I took.)

Anyone who carries, or might pick up a gun in self defense, should have something like Texas Law Shield, or Massad Ayoob’s Citizens Defense Network, or their own attorney (if they understand defensive gun use.)

It’s part of the burden we assume when we train to use deadly force.

Ever seen the original “9 To 5”?

Sooner or later, work will move us out to an office park near the state surplus store, just west of the airport. It probably won’t happen until after the New Year, however.

  18. lynn says:

Huh, new place to me, Texas Gun Club. Wow, 50 yd indoor range. I have been to a Lawshield presentation before, it was great getting the explanation about “officer friendly” and “officer scared”. I’ve thought about getting the carry insurance but I have not done it (yet).
    https://texasgunclub.com/

Huh, that new gun range is just a block away from where I went to high school. Wait, is that the old bowling alley ? And, I had to google maps their location as there is not a single map on their website that I could find.

I had a little setback over the last few days. Am really tired and find myself breathless quite a bit. Not unexpected, I have a new 9 mm hole between the large chambers of my heart that is going to take 6 to 12 months to grow closed. Plus the ablated areas inside my heart are still bleeding and apparently I had quite a few.

Did a few things around the house Saturday in preparation for a church small group meeting at our house next Sunday. But, I did not get to Sam’s Club as planned. Or, to Walmart. But I did make it to the church small group meeting last night and then came home and walked a mile with the wife and dog (in her wagon). I was going to pull the dog in her wagon but the wife would not let me since I was breathing hard after 100 ft.

Getting old sucks. And there is no way that I will repeat this ablation surgery, even if I need to.

  19. Nick Flandrey says:

Holy cow Lynn, don’t overdo it! You just had heart surgery man, take a break!

  21. lynn says:

Holy cow Lynn, don’t overdo it! You just had heart surgery man, take a break!

Oh, I did. I had to reattach a drawer false front to the kitchen island that fell off for the umpteenth time a month ago. Took me five+ hours to permanently fix with one hour breaks every 30 minutes. I started with two inch wood screws, moved to 2.75 inch wood screws, and then to 3.5 inch wood screws. That drawer front will never come off again. My 18V Makita drill is an awesome tool for tasks like this.

My son came out of Marine Corps basic training with the motto “Pain is weakness leaving the body”. They are not kidding according to him, he lost 45 lbs in basic training. Not a bad motto until it kills you.

A tactical nuke on the Interbay Peninsula wiping out everything south of Kennedy Ave. in Tampa would be an improvement.

    Just kidding … Maybe.

I’ll have to take a look at the book just to see how much the author really knows about Tampa. Florida used to be whacked in a good way.

Work pays something like $3 million a year for all of us to park downtown. The new office manager cleaned house on parking validation and hang tag abuses, but the basic number didn’t change by a whole lot.

$48 to park is cheap by West Coast standards. And that’s on top of the tolls like $6 on the floating bridge running from Downtown Seattle to Medina, near Bill Gates’ house.

Not impressed. The “complete list” of barter items doesn’t even include items I know we discussed over there in the comment section.

Small, light, easy to come by now, but almost impossible post collapse–

needle and thread! Zippers, buttons, thimbles, all the sewing stuff (notions)
    Batteries
    primers
    colman mantles
    oil lamp wicks
    lighter flints
    screws/nails
    fishhooks

depending on the collapse, there are other things too, but you could fit a town’s worth of the simple stuff in a shoebox.

    n

EDIT- found the announcement over there, someone named Dan Sullivan is writing new content and managing a group of contributors. The barter article was not written by Tara, she does the WDIDtoPTW? column.

It’s got the light, breezy, cursory feel of most of the prepping sites.

    10w seems a little … low.

Well, yes. But I bought 70 of them for about $2 each. They are basically one foot square. There are at least 3 or 4 panels that are twice that size but I didn’t pull them off the truck yet.

Individually, I think each panel would drive a camera with an appropriate couple of gel batteries, or a gate opener. My plan is to put them on a rack and gang a bunch together. And Ive got the 80w panel too.

    It’s an adventure….

The false drawer front had six wood staples holding it on. The idiot installer put a handle on it so people keep on grabbing it and pulling it off. No way gorilla glue would have done any better job. I thought about removing the handle but the idiot installer broke off the bolt heads too.

The yearly boiler support is a very essential work that is ideal finished in the hotter months of the calendar year, but did you
know all-around ninety% of us never have the boiler serviced.

The boiler for some explanation looks to get overlooked until eventually something takes
place, you go to have a shower and uncover you have
no incredibly hot drinking water. Then you begin to panic seeking
to uncover someone to repair service the boiler.

So why is the once-a-year boiler service essential?

eleven many years ago the higher efficiency-condensing boiler became obligatory in the United Kingdom.

With the boilers just before condensing it was not as essential to
have them serviced as it is now. The rationale is that the boilers then did not have
so lots of areas inside of as they do in today’s condensing boilers, sure they went
improper but were being a large amount much easier and cheaper to repair, even though it has always been a recommendation by the boiler makers to
have the boiler and any fuel appliance serviced yearly.

It really is much more vital now than ever prior to to have an yearly boiler services and the boiler checked in excess of to make guaranteed it is carrying
out as really should be, and most critical that it’s Risk-free.

With an once-a-year boiler support one particular of the most important checks is the flue pipe, this has to be checked to make positive all joints and seals are not
leaking carbon monoxide or items of combustion into
the area the boiler is situated in.

The superior performance or condensing boilers as they are identified though running make condense, this is
an acidic h2o, mainly because it is acidic, it can start out to corrode the flue-pipe, and really should this transpire the flue will commence to leak solutions of combustion (carbon monoxide), which
as we all know can be really unsafe to life, this is a
single of the most critical pieces of the services.

All condensing boilers have a condense trap created in, this
wants to be cleaned out and checked for leakage it’s also element of the boilers flue program.

When the boiler is managing the water it generates cleans
the combustion chamber of any residue and this ends up in the trap.

With a lot of boilers of these days they function below high
stress and have an enlargement vessel linked to the pipe operate, this can be both internally or
    externally.

The growth vessel will more than time will get rid of tension and will have to have to be recharged to maintain the
boiler doing the job to it is really complete efficiently.

The enlargement vessel is a incredibly vital section of
the once-a-year boiler company that requirements to be checked.
After the vessel loses the charge it places pressure on the pump, the interior h2o elements
and the total O rings inside of the boiler.

Have you at any time observed when your boiler is managing that
the tension gauge either fitted on the boiler or on exterior pipe
starts to increase then when the boiler cools down the force drops down to zero.
You may even have seen that the discharge pipe or overflow pipe as some people contact it, is
showing signals of drinking water discharge. If you have then this is usually
an indication that the enlargement vessel has lost its charge.

Aspect of the once-a-year boiler services is to test the boiler combustion rate.

This is to make guaranteed the boiler is burning gasoline as
it was built for, this is carried out using a flue gasoline analyser which is inserted into the flue-pipe and a examining is taken, if the readings are inside of the boilers recommendations then no further motion is essential, but if the readings are out of the suggestions then more investigations are required to
    discover the issue.

With the previous style of boiler the burners were being eliminated
and the flue-approaches were being cleaned and checked, but with the condensing boiler the flue-fuel examining tells us when the burners want
to be taken out. In truth Vaillant boilers now say the burners may possibly never ever need to be eliminated if the boiler is established up and
preserved adequately, they as soon as advised that the burners be taken out
just about every 5 many years.

With an annual boiler services these are just a several
of the checks that will need to be carried out, and since many
boilers now come with lengthy warranties, to maintain the boiler warranty legitimate you have to have an yearly boiler support.
As soon as the service has been carried out, then the engineer demands to
day and indication the guarantee booklet to hold the warranty legitimate.

I have spoken to quite a few clients with extensive boiler warranties, and for some rationale they appear to be to believe they do not need an annual boiler assistance simply because of the prolonged warranty.
This is not so, you need to retain up with the annual boiler service otherwise, should really you
need to have to make a assert beneath the guarantee you may well locate you will have a massive maintenance bill, all simply because you failed to hold up the annual boiler company.

One particular last factor in advance of we finish, really
don’t neglect that any variety of gas get the
job done, be it fitting your new cooker, the once-a-year boiler services whatever it
might be has to be carried out by a Gasoline Risk-free Registered individual.
If they are not fuel secure registered then you will have no warranty on the boiler and most significant you will
uncover your dwelling insurance plan also gets void
    must some thing materialize.
