Kids and wife let me sleep.

80F and saturated outside. NOAA forecast has rain for us at some point today. Will it hold off long enough for me to pour concrete?????

I guess we’ll see.

This story, while filled with the usual bad reporting, has some things worth noting.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6144849/Video-released-showing-calm-shooter-walk-Cincinnati-bank-coolly-open-fire-killing-three.html

“Leonard Cain told The Cincinnati Enquirer he was going into the bank when someone alerted him about the shooting. He said a woman wearing headphones didn’t hear the warnings and walked into the bank and got shot.”

Headphones and situational awareness do not go hand in hand. 12 bullet holes in her skin to emphasize the point.

And this one has some interesting stuff too, including in a very meta way, for what they include and how they skew and spin. For fun, look at every line and decide if it’s a statement of fact (even if wrong) or a statement of opinion…..

Note the use of language. “extreme” “gun violence”

Look at the countries compared to the US and ask yourself which one’s are actually more or less “violent”. Ask whether that threat comes from fellow citizens or from state or state supported actors….

  3. SteveF says:

which one’s are actually more or less “violent”.

Some buttmunching commentator (BBC, I think) was smarming about how England’s rate of gun violence was so low compared to the US’s. And their gun suicide rate was almost zero, too. Right, dingleberry. Now tell us the overall rate of suicide and violence, including acid attacks and driving cars into crowds.

  4. Nick Flandrey says:

Or organized gangs of child rapists…..

In other news– It’s coming right for us!!!111!!!11

Thanks for the suggestion re Indiglo watches. Looks like this

    is just what I’m after.

    @Ray Thompson
Remember the old Bic Beam Box? 😉 Was never very good at radio reception in my apartment because I have a hill to the East and a huge concrete building to the West.

BUT… a friend moved into an old-folks home and needs an antenna because he just wants local news and doesn’t need cable or Internetz. Do you think that will suffice, or will I need one of those Radio Shack doohickeys?

  6. Ray Thompson says:

Remember the old Bic Beam Box?

Nope. Have no idea what it is.

Do you think that will suffice, or will I need one of those Radio Shack doohickeys?

Your friend will need a digital antenna. Get one at Walmart and give it a try. Should plug into the RF connector on the TV. And the TV can scan for the channels. Local news should be easily available.

    Thanks @Ray.

I thought we had spoken about it years ago. Must have been someone else.
Quite an interesting gadget — Google it.
    https://www.google.com/search?q=Bic+Beam+Box

I bought the TV for him on the cheap — but good quality if only 720. Unfortunately, it has to scan and do a setup routine before initializing properly. Oy vey. I can’t wait to see what happens when I plug in an old USB drive full of movies!

I just bought an Amazon Fire Stick for $25 (Prime pricing; $40 without Prime): https://amzn.to/2wYFciQ . It will replace an older Roku box that connects via 802.1/n and is not HDMI. The Fire Stick will do 802.1/ac . And the price was ‘not very much’.

We shall see how it works. We do most of our TV via DirecTV; a lot of it is ‘time-shifting’. Not a bit sports fan, so that’s not an issue. We watch Amazon Prime TV a bit, and Netflix. Both of those are on each device.

“Dick Morris: How To Defeat the Blue Wave”
    https://www.westernjournal.com/dick-morris-defeat-blue-wave/

“Alarmingly, all recent polls that have measured “generic preference” by party in the coming congressional elections have recorded a Democratic margin — some by a lot.”

“In this survey question, voters are asked to choose between a hypothetical Democrat and a hypothetical Republican in their district for Congress. Ten polls in a row have shown a Democratic lead — eight by more than eight points and six by more than ten.”

“Republicans usually lose these polls — even if they go on to win the election itself — because of gerrymandering of House districts and the concentration of Democrats in certain lopsided districts. Also, these polls tend to test the opinions of registered voters as opposed to likely ones. (But these same polls indicate a greater enthusiasm about voting in the midterms this year among Democrats than among GOP voters).”

“The Democratic edge has clearly grown in the past two weeks and now is at about the level it was in 2006 when the Democrats took away both houses of Congress.”

Elections are won on emotions. Ted Cruz forgot this and may pay the price. Yard signs are all about excited people showing visible support. Yard signs may not be necessary for wins but they are necessary for motivating the base.

  10. DadCooks says:

@Rick H, I believe you will enjoy your Fire TV Stick. We have bought each new model/generation when they come out, usually in the fall, so don’t have any regrets when the new models come out in a month or two. Our current model works with Alexa, albeit crudely. I predict much better Alexa integration in the next model. We use Netflix and Amazon Prime TV a lot. The WiFi connection has improved with each model, we do not get any buffering with this generation.

    Enjoy

Emotion … and the implication that BETO is Hispanic in some way.

If the ballots say BETO instead of Robert Francis, Cruz is in serious trouble.

I saw MJ Hegar yard signs appear today. The Republican incumbent is MIA.

CA money and TV production talent once again, just like BETO.

We looked at that house … or one just like it. The Progs always move to Round Rock when the kids arrive.

She’s careful not to show the tattoos in the commercial airing on the Fox station.

Wow ! That is professional ! That commercial cost quite a few bucks, maybe a couple of million of them.

Doesn’t your legal name have to be on the ballot ? No nicknames ?

Is Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke a “white Hispanic” like George Zimmerman? Seems like an obvious case of cultural appropriation. Or is Beto “transitioning”, if you get my drift? 😀

  16. ech says:

oesn’t your legal name have to be on the ballot ? No nicknames ?

Here is the law in Texas. Nicknames allowed with given name.

Sec. 52.031. FORM OF NAME ON BALLOT. (a) A candidate’s name shall be printed on the ballot with the given name or initials first, followed by a nickname, if any, followed by the surname, in accordance with this section.

    (b) In combination with the surname, a candidate may use one or more of the following:

    (1) a given name;

    (2) a contraction or familiar form of a given name by which the candidate is known; or

    (3) an initial of a given name.

    (c) A nickname of one unhyphenated word of not more than 10 letters by which the candidate has been commonly known for at least three years preceding the election may be used in combination with a candidate’s name. A nickname that constitutes a slogan or otherwise indicates a political, economic, social, or religious view or affiliation may not be used. A nickname may not be used unless the candidate executes and files with the application for a place on the ballot an affidavit indicating that the nickname complies with this subsection.

    (d) A suffix such as “Sr.,” “Jr.,” or “2nd” may be used in combination with a candidate’s name.

    (e) A married woman or widow may use in combination with her surname, if the same as her husband’s surname, the given name or initials of her husband with the prefix “Mrs.”

Slab is poured. Rented a bigger mixer so I could get it in 3 mixes instead of 6. Used 12 bags, 60#, and had about one shovel full left over. Calc said .4 ft3 which is about exactly what I got.

Still need to polish the top when it has kicked a bit more. I feel like I’ve probably over worked it already, but it’s the first real slab I’ve ever poured by myself.

It’s 88F with almost 90%RH so I’m not expecting the water to evaporate too quickly. I’ll be covering it with plastic sheet to slow the cure too. I’m soaked completely thru with sweat.

    Tired too.

    n

  18. Nick Flandrey says:

The handprints and dates are in, the slab is covered with a plastic sheet, and I can head to the shower.

HUGE step forward to finally move on this freaking thing.

  19. Ray Thompson says:

but it’s the first real slab I’ve ever poured by myself

I did an 8×10 slab for the mower shed. 15 inches high on one end, 6 inches high on the other end. Lots of gravel filler in the middle to reduce concrete volume. Required 3.5 yards of cement which was less than the minimum of 5 yards to avoid a delivery charge. Had I known I would have skipped the gravel.

I had the stuff delivered as I needed a mix with fiberglass and needed to have it poured at the same time. No way I could mix that volume using a mixer. I still installed rebar and rebar mesh. Put in foundation bolts while the mix was soft to fasten the shed structure solidly to the slab. Also ran conduit in the mix for the electrical supply.

Even with a delivery moving that cement around and then smoothing it was really hard work. I really had stretched my limits on what I should have been doing.

When I lived on the ranch I poured a 20 foot by 60 foot barn floor 5 inches thick. All mixed by a small mixer. Gravel and sand mix was taken from the creek bed. Had a front end loader to help with effort. Filling the mixer was done by hand. Took a few weeks which was OK as the pour did not have to be done the same time. My uncle was a cheap asshole and figured my slave labor was the better option. I was young and that was still a major effort consuming weeks of exhausting time.

Well, my unranked Texas Aggies lost to #2 Clemson in college football tonight, 26 to 28. Looks like Jimbo Fisher did a great job in motivating his new team, almost good enough.

I keep meaning to pour a small concrete pad for the trash can to sit on. So far, I’ve been able to convince myself that it is just fine sitting in dirt.

Today was car maintenance day. Had a bad u-joint and race on a half shaft on the corvette, so air got the replacement in today. Next was an oil change for the Crosstour. Had my 14 year old help. He has helped before, and understands the concepts, but my goodness, he really isn’t mechanically inclined. That’s ok, because he is willing to try.

Last task was to install a trailer hitch and wiring harness on the Crosstour. I started that this evening. Got the rear of the car disassembled and the hitch mounted. I’ll intall the harness tomorrow. I could have done without the harness, as the main purpose of the hitch is to carry a bike rack. But, if I didn’t put it in, I sure as hell would need it. Soon. I also need to go to Tractor Supply tomorrow morning to pick up some grade 8 bolts.

  23. Ray Thompson says:

And Kentucky beat Florida, first time in about 31 years I think. Lot of sad people in the swamp, lot of happy people moving north on I-75 tomorrow.

If you guys want an example of truly horrible web design and implementation, try ordering this watch:

Ordering it wasn’t worth my time, I swear to God!
And it “supposedly” has a date function, but I don’t see one in the pictures. Someone’s going to get H3ll if it doesn’t!

On the plus side, I found a coax cable and I’ll be damned! The Bic Beam Box picks up HD from local stations really well, even in my secluded location. The old man will be pleased, I’m sure. @Ray , if it wasn’t you, then perhaps DadCooks? Anyway, it’s cool.

ATSC was a pretty good improvement. At this point, the government should stop trying to “fix” it with versions which are not backwards compatible.

It is blatant cultural appropriation. If you watch the recent TV commercials, the candidate puts a little Latin inflection into the ‘E’ when he says, “I’m Buh-ihTO O’Rourke, and I approve this message.”

Evidently BETO is a nickname for Roberto south of the border.

Again, I doubt the CA money people behind BETO and Lupe expected either to win, but Robert Francis might just pull it off.

Enough to make the boosters happy?

I still believe Jimbo’s departure from Tallahassee was due to yet another gracious Texas gift to the taxpayers of the State of Florida.

Charlie Strong coached USF (my alma mater) to an upset over GA Tech this weekend. UT boosters are once again paying him the bulk of his 2018 paycheck ($4 million from UT, $1 million from USF) to coach in Tampa this year.

  28. lynn says:

Nothing will make the boosters happy except a national championship.
