and the long weekend isn’t over yet.

Some notes, arresting known criminals works. 18 yo male is only a “boy” or a “teen” when in the news.

Gangs are the problem. not “due in part to people living in poverty, along with a combination of inefficient emergency care, and criminal investigations failing to progress quickly enough.”

Stay out of alleys with groups of gangbangers.

I am still really sore and the doc said take limited duty with a max 5 lb lift for five days. So I am going to call into the boss and take Tuesday and Wednesday off.

    From Lynn, yesterday:

Well, that would have been stupid on a stick. I wonder how much McCain got paid for that ?

During his 2008 primary campaign, he had to discharge his no. 1, campaign contribution extractor when it got out that he was the number 1, top level lobbyist in the swampland. The extractor, the foremost lobbyist represented the EU Airbus production consortium. RINO did not want Boeing to produce the replacements for the decades old SAC KC-135 tankers whose mission was to refuel B-52 tankers on the over the arctic and back. Yes, USA combat aircraft could be assembled outside of the US.

  5. Ray Thompson says:

Well, since it is labor day I am going outside to do some labor. Time to mow the lawn.

Airbus was going to build the tankers in Mobile with *non-union* labor. Instead, that facility will be cranking out A320s to compete with the 737s.

Boeing may live to regret having that tanker contract reopened after Airbus won the bidding. Assembly in Renton isn’t economically viable anymore, and the 767 was obsolete even before the final decision by the Air Force.

How about: Airbus assembling the airframes in EU and Lockheed installing the top secret communications devices in Mobile?

You can thank the EPA for that by holding the steel and aluminum mills to unreasonable standards. Unreasonable standards have a cost and they allowed the foreign manufacturers to sneak under our pricing.

  10. CowboySlim says:

I will admit that I never read the Lockheed Martin proposal to the DoD where they specified what company would assemble the airframe and where that would occur. OTOH, I have no doubt that it was of Airbus design, a modification of one of their commercial planes being assembled overseas.

I do know that they dropped out of the competition when the facts pertaining to their far greater operating costs became known.

A frequent-flyer friend of mine prefers Boeing to Airbus because the latter’s airframes incorporate a little too much shake, rattle, and roll.

From @ITguy1998 yesterday, “I just put a new battery in my wife’s 2015 Crosstour. She drives about 6 miles to work…not enough to consistently charge up the battery. I finally bought another battery tender and throw it on her car several times a week. Got the battery at Costco – best price by far.”

I’ve had a Costco Interstate branded battery for a year. Definitely the lowest price I have found, but actually made by either Johnson Controls or Exide. Both companies know how to make good batteries, and how to make them to a price. We’ll see how this one holds up. So far, its full charge open circuit resting voltage is a bit lower than my other flooded batteries; this means very little, but might be a concern.

Another very good battery for the money is the top Walmart brand EverStart Maxx, made by Johnson Controls. I had one of those for several years, but sold the car it was in, so don’t know how long it would have lasted. They are more expensive than the Costco Interstates, but have their following, with great reviews.

Our biggest problem is heat, which leads to high self discharge and sulfation. Keeping the batteries fully charged with a good temperature compensated float charger helps a lot, in my experience. High frequency pulse desulfators are claimed to be helpful, but the jury is out; the latest claims are that most commercial units use current pulses that are too low. Since most car batteries die of neglect, those who use desulfators also tend to care for their batteries, clouding the issue. Best is prevention. Never let a starter battery go below 90% charge for very long, if possible.

Driving six miles should be plenty to keep a battery near 100% charge. OTOH, newer cars have many ways to drain a battery. Using your Tender is a good idea. There may be better units, but Battery Tenders are popular and can be had for low cost. Also recommended are the Battery MINDer brand. These can be more expensive, but might be of higher quality and longer lasting. Your choice. All others are taking a chance: some are probably great, and some cost a LOT, but are of questionable added value. Again, your choice.

Some batteries are designed for hot climates, and some for cold. If you can identify them, of course buy the appropriate one.

I have also tried AGM batteries. My first lasted 17 years with good care. It was an original Optima Red Top, made in Colorado by a division of the Swedish company that bought the rights from the company that originated the spiral wound VRLA cell. Later, Johnson Controls bought the factory and all branding rights. My second one, made by Johnson, lasted only five years. My third AGM battery was made by Enersys in Pennsylvania, and was branded Odyssey. It is only about five years old, and is already weak. I am reluctantly back to flooded batteries.

AGM batteries seem to be an excellent idea, but if they ever get sulfated it is much harder to reverse than flooded batteries. They also seem more sensitive to heat. Eventually, the industry might go to LiPo, but these have their problems, too. Meanwhile, the automotive battery industry is full of mergers and buyouts, so we rarely know who made a given battery. In the end, it matters more how well it was made, and figuring that out is a challenge.

Saw this later: solar panels are good for maintaining batteries IF they have good output regulation and temperature compensation.. Most don’t. I am not very knowledgeable, because I keep all my cars in the garage a large percentage of the time.

As for outlets, formerly known as “cigar lighters,” I my newest car has two next to each other, one ON all the time and the other switched. The ones on my older cars are ON all the time, but the newer cars are all switched. I have no use for the ones that are switched, so will eventually modify the ones that are. I wish the industry would adopt a better connector.

EADS/Airbus was going to do final assembly of the airframe in Mobile using the A330 as the basis for the design. They never would have won the bidding doing airframe assembly overseas due to the politics involved.

Short term, Boeing will take a financial beatdown on every one of those tankers. Long term, Airbus learned about producing airframes in Mobile, and the A32os will start rolling out of the factory next year.

Sooner or later, Boeing’s unions will have to accept that Renton is done.

Rick H: I’m getting rain right now, but not necessarily related to Gordon. A current radar snapshot shows outer bands that are going to get us tomorrow, but the NHC’s current best guess has it headed for the LA / MS border. This is more or less the same place that Katrina came ashore, but from a different direction. Our Houston correspondents will get less rain than I will; such is life along what one poster likes to call “the world’s largest hot tub”.

  15. lynn says:

“Heavy rains wind down, Gordon intensifies in the Gulf”
    https://spacecityweather.com/heavy-rains-wind-down-gordon-intensifies-in-the-gulf/

“Starting close to home and working outward this afternoon: Heavy rain to the tune of 6-10″ or more along the immediate coast has caused flooding from Freeport through Galveston to High Island. As of early afternoon, High Island had seen over 11 inches of rain, Jamaica Beach had seen north of ten inches, and Galveston was nearing seven inches so far. This has created waterlogged scenes in Galveston today.”

Somebody done has sloshed the hot tub over the edge around here already.

“In a pair of tweets, Trump seemed to blame the attorney general for the timing of federal charges last month against Reps. Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter.”

I cannot believe how bad an Attorney General that Jeff Sessions is. It almost makes me wonder if this is a big show.

Currently sunny and pleasant at my house. There is about an inch and one half of rain in the gauge so we got more than I thought.

I’ve been doing a report for the job I did on Thursday. 4 pages with an additional 4 pages of sketchup model… Bit of a rabbit hole, and more than was required, but it shows my abilities better than just sending the invoice…..

The only sense I can make of it being a “show” is if Trump wanted the Republicans to lose Congress so he can come roaring back along with a clear Senate majority in 2020.

Interesting news at the end of the article. John Kerry. I guess the Dems don’t have enough wheezebags running already.

After the 2004 election, when Kerry snuck his military records out to the press as promised, the big reveal in the files was that Kerry’s GPA at Yale was a point lower than George W’s “gentlemens’ ‘C'” average.

There is a rumor floating around out there that Sessions is going to charge Hillarity, Comey, Mueller, and Rosenstein with conspiracy before the midterms.

Yeah, I know. Stop reading Infowars.

Indicting Hillary isn’t going to happen. That’s a dangerous precedent that starts us down the road to being more of a banana republic than we already are.

I know but a guy can wish, right ? And we are a banana republic now, been one for decades. This is what a rich banana republic looks like, we may get to see what a poor banana republic looks like (Argentina, Cuba, … Venezuela). Trump is trying to forestall that but I doubt that he can.

They will indict Trump the day that he gets out of office. They will hound him until the day he dies as punishment for daring to run against them. They are going to indict one or more of his children soon. I would like to see Mueller on a slow plane to Guantanamo then but I doubt it.

The wife and the dog and I went for a short walk before dark. I was wearing a long sleeve shirt with very loose walking shorts and shivering with the cold (probably 80 F). All I walked with them was about 1/4 mile. I am quite the pansy now. But, getting better by the day.

Both of my legs are quite sore with those three 9mm catheters that he shoved into my body and up into my heart. I look forward to those fully healing up but it may be quite before I am back to 100%. That is, whatever passes for 100% nowadays.

I am quite amazed that I do not need pain meds. Nor antibiotics, other than the 50 mg of doxycycline antibiotics that I take each day to fool my autoimmune disease into remission.

The pain meds are over-prescribed in the US. Unfortunately, “quality of care” surveys from the insurance companies often include “Describe your pain on a scale from 1-10” questions, and a lot of doctors will just issue the script without a second thought.

Texas has a “shadow” DEA to monitor doctors to prevent “pill mill” operations like the one which ran for about a year on my way to work in Tampa 10 years ago. Any state within ~12-18 hours driving distance was represented with license plates in the parking lot., and TPD looked the other way to the point that they would even be out directing traffic on occasion.

Of course, Texas has out-of-control drug problems of its own, particularly ADD meds. If my wife didn’t push back at her job, limiting the hour-long whine session appointments, the management would have her writing Adderall scripts all day long.

  32. Ray Thompson says:

Going to give Rip Van Winkle a run for the record? 🙂

Even the VA is part of the problem. When I go to the clinic for checkups they ask about my back. I tell them about the discomfort, pain if you will, that is almost constant. The VA says they will right me a prescription for the some pain medication. I tell the VA no, I will not be taking pain medications that are possibly addictive. I can live with and manage the pain better than the possibility of addiction. There is also the adverse side effects that I am concerned.

Good for you. The VA is working on the problem. I read an article years ago about the VA trying to get people off opoids using yoga and other methods. Here is another article on the problem.

Exactly. My one knee hurts all the time (along with a few other keepsakes of a few exciting jobs and hobbies). I deal with it, well enough that I don’t think about it unless I’m too tired to successfully ignore it. No drugs, especially no addictive drugs, thank you very much.

  36. paul says:

Yeah, nix on the pain meds. I have four “pins” in my thigh bone and sometimes it just freaking hurts enough that I want a pair of crutches.

“Pins”, as in six inches long. Motorcycle wreck and I wasn’t anything like the Flying Nun over her car and into the gutter. Broke it where the bone narrows to go into the hip socket.

But. I have a leg. Doc said it was 50/50.
