Thur. Aug. 30, 2018 – almost the end of another week

By on August 30th, 2018 in Random Stuff

A bit cooler this morning after a slightly cooler night. 73F and very humid. Wonder what the dew point is?

Gonna do some work for hire today, so I’ll be away from my desk. Hope I can remember how!

I’m sure there is something out there to talk about….

Nick, or anyone else, have you heard anything from Mrs OFD? Now that I’m back in NY I was going to swing up to his hospital and visit him. However, it’s 3 hours away and I don’t want to waste a trip if he’s in a different hospital or can’t see visitors. And the hospital will neither confirm nor deny the existence of any such person as Mr OFD. If you have any confirmation that he’s still there or anyone I can contact, I’ll drive on up. Thanks.

  2. Nick Flandrey says:

I haven’t heard from her, but I’ve emailed you her addy.

I get to interview another thirty-ish developer to whom I will be subordinate.

At least the guy has a PhD and my bosses have cover for the age discrimination.

Yeah, I know. PhD. We’ll see how he fares today under fire.

Dew point is 33F here, headed to 15F at 1500 this afternoon. That’s 100F dry bulb and 5% RH. Glorious desert dessications!

I’m curious as to why they guy isn’t teaching at the place he got his PhD and is currently doing postdoc, a well-known agricultural and mechancial institution here in the state.

Passing thru SEA on way to SFO.
Why are so many travelers in flip flops?

That’s like trying to outrun lava in swim fins.

I detest current air travel however the flight itself was ok. Plenty of good, free, coffee. My connecting flight is an hour + late but I’m not stressed. I’ll get there when I get there. Hoping to stop at House if Bagpipes in San Francisco by they’re appt only and haven’t returned my calls.

    @SteveF
Finished reading your story to my daughter. She enjoyed it and laughed in all the right places. She requests you write (and publish) more.
Plus, you were right. Bagpipes are hard. Feral and disobedient. My musical background keeps screwing me up. Having a good time making an awful racket on my practice chanter.

Flip flops are everywhere, but shoe removal is a standard practice with air travel.

SEA is still dreadful, but I miss PDX. It is one of the few things I miss about Vantucky. Austin’s airport is a wreck, and, IIRC, it is less than 20 years old.

Between the time OFD went MIA around February and the beginning of this month I have mailed two cards to the medical facility in which he is supposedly ensconced and two letters directly to the hobbit house asking for info on his condition, none of which have elicited a response.

I can appreciate the plight of OFD’s better half; having to care for an invalid while holding down a traveling job, fending off the IRS, and funding Princess’s unending education would be a monumental task even for someone who didn’t have her own health problems. Still, how much effort does it take to dash off a quick comment here?

I was actually going to suggest that @SteveF, since he lives the closest, visit the hobbit house. Hopefully that won’t be necessary, but it shouldn’t be ruled out.

Anyone in the resident brain trust have any suggestions?

I usually wear my lightweight Under Armour tac boots when I travel. Never take footwear off on the plane. Geez.

  11. MrAtoz says:

I fear the worst for OFD since we know nothing at this point. I hope he is OK and on the mend.

Mr. SteveF, if you need funds or anything for the trip, let me know. I can Paypal sumpin’ to you.

    Ditto.

Landed at our first RV outing. Uneventful. Consumed about 10 minutes to get unhooked from the cowboy Cadillac and get the connections to the trailer, power, water, sewer and cable TV. Internet is via WiFi. Lot of big ass motor homes in this park. One next to us is the size of a large bus, dual axle, four slide outs, must be huge inside. Park is OK from what I have seen. Not ready to explore as we are cooling off under the A/C. A couple of shouting matches with the spouse, part of the learning curve. We will eventually establish our roles and know what needs to be done. Some work to figure out what we need in the trailer and what we don’t need. Part of the learning curve I guess.

Yeh, things may not have turned out well for OFD. Any extended stay in a hospital is never good. I had a feeling that RBT would not get out and I have that same feeling for OFD.

  14. DadCooks says:

I had better keep my mouth shut about how I feel about Mrs. OFD. It will not be pretty.

I never expected any responses from my cards/letters/emails, but it is really odd that no one has heard anything. Most long-term care facilities and hospices have a person/volunteer/clergy who ensures friends and relatives have some news and acknowledge those who are contacting him.

If @OFD is still alive, I am afraid he is feeling like an abandoned lump.

I sent a Xmas card to the Hobbit House and it was returned as “address unknown”. Err…. looking at Google maps, the PO is like 5 city blocks away.

  16. paul says:

Why are so many travelers in flip flops?

If you have to take your shoes off for security… flips are the way to go. And a pair of socks in your pocket to use as “foot sweaters” on the plane.

My plan for any future air travel is to go commando. I’ll just drop my jeans. If there is no “happy ending” get yer mitts off of my junk. Might miss my flight for indecent exposure…. but.
Or maybe I’ll identify as a Moslem lady in full dress. They get a pass, right?

Austin’s airport is a wreck, and, IIRC, it is less than 20 years old.

It opened in 1999. I have never used it. From where I live, it’s about 100 miles down 281 to SA and a nice airport. To ABIA, gah…. you have to go through Austin. Not worth it to save 30 miles of gasoline.

Mueller was a nice airport. But the “make it go away it’s so noisy” bull crap happened. Personally, I thought it was AWESOME to stand in the parking lot at Highland Mall and watch a huge jet fly over. Noise? I have fingers to stick in my ear holes.

  17. paul says:

I never expected any responses from my cards/letters/emails, but it is really odd that no one has heard anything.

Not a thing? Wow. Maybe a stamped postcard addressed to you would get some kind of response.

  18. mediumwave says:

Maybe a stamped postcard addressed to you would get some kind of response.

IIRC, OFD’s missus wasn’t good at opening her mail, much less responding to it. 🙁

  19. paul says:

Maybe addressed to the hospital with a note?

  20. DadCooks says:

I have sent self-addressed stamped postcards and envelopes to all possible addresses. No response.

  21. paul says:

    Ah.. That seems strange.

So… back to my alter ego conspiracy plan.

Oh, please. Any Prog who didn’t know the political leanings of the Snyder family hasn’t been paying attention.

The boycott will work about as well as the one against Chick-fil-A did.

What about Hardee’s/Carl’s Jr. When we went to the Reagan Library a few years ago, the Karcher (founders of Carl’s Jr.) family name was listed as the donors of the garden behind the museum.

  24. Nick Flandrey says:

I’d almost do the ~3hr drive just to get In N Out. If I pass by one, I stop. LOVE them and would mortgage the house for a franchise if such a thing were possible. But franchising would ruin it, so I’ll have to just give them my money for food.

    From Mrs OFD:

Thanks so much. You and your comrades mean so much to him and I am honored to be included in your friendship. Please pass this message along.

The reality, dear friends of my beloved, is that he is dying , as the docs have tried everything they could, but this damn disease paralyzed his gut so he could not get the nutrition through a feeding tube, which made it impossible for him to ever getthe protein needed to build him back up. He is now unable to talk, unable to breathe unassisted, and the docs gave given up hope for recovery . I’m the hospital every night so I apologize got not getting to Yall sooner. He is totally with itthough paralyzed from the neck down . Every evening we watch s movie in his IPad so suggestions sre welcome . God Bless You All.

She also told me he’s too weak to receive visitors, but she’ll let me know if he wants me to come up. I’m going to send a card tomorrow with a cute cat or a dumb dog or something in an attempt to cheer him up.

    His address

  26. SteveF says:

Thanks, all, for the offers to help pay for my trip to see OFD, but it’s only a couple hundred miles each way. Even in my less-than-stellar minivan I’m pretty sure I could afford it. (Unless gas in VT is $5000/gallon, in which case to hell with programming for a living, I’m going to open a gas station in Vermont.)

  27. Nick Flandrey says:

    Oh shit, that sucks.

  28. ech says:

Or maybe I’ll identify as a Moslem lady in full dress. They get a pass, right?

Nope. My facebook feed had a woman upset because they did a full patdown and then a strip search in private. No cavity search.

  29. Greg Norton says:

Or maybe I’ll identify as a Moslem lady in full dress. They get a pass, right?

Don’t even think about that unless you want a lot of grief. YouTube has a video of what happened when a few Australian males decided to hit the streets in full burqa.

Crossdress as a nun all you like, but don’t mess with Club Hijab.

  30. mediumwave says:

    From Mrs OFD: …

Neither as good news as we’d hoped for, nor as bad as we’d feared.

Let us keep in mind that miraculous recoveries do happen.

  31. MrAtoz says:

I will say a prayer for Mr. OFD and Liz tonight. The World won’t be a better place without him. Liz and OFD’s family must be devastated.

  32. mediumwave says:

I’m going to send a card tomorrow with a cute cat or a dumb dog or something in an attempt to cheer him up.

That should nicely complement the one I’m sending with the seedy-looking cat, the hairball-hacking theme, and the “hang in there” message.

  33. Mr.K says:

    Regarding Mr.OFD..
That is not the news we were hoping for..
Also thanks to Mr. SteveF for taking the time to visit on our behalf..

  34. CowboySlim says:

    Unfortunately, I am totally unsurprised.

  35. JimL says:

Now I am sad. I’ll say a prayer for Mr. OFD, and send a card. Neither will do much more than is already being done, but I’ll do it anyway.

  36. DadCooks says:

Going out to get new cards for OFD and his wife today (Friday).

Thanks so much, @SteveF for finally getting some word, I was wishing/hoping/praying that it would not be this.

    Sad, Peace, Hope
