Thur. April 19, 2018 – did WWIII already start?

By on April 19th, 2018 in Random Stuff

65F with 43%RH fluffy clouds this AM. Very pleasant, but is unlikely to stay that way….

So, did WWWIII already start? That’s what my 8yo asked me at breakfast today. Says one of her classmates said it started with some bombs.

Is she right? Some headlines:

” Largest Chinese Naval Drill “In 600 Years” Begins: Live-Fire Exercise In Taiwan Strait

State-run Chinese papers said the number of warships assembled “the largest of its kind in 600 years.”

“The Road To 2025 (Part 1) – Prepare For A Multi-Polar World”

“US Sub That Attacked Syria “Not Welcome” Back To Italy”

“‘There has been nobody tougher on Russia!’ President boasts of killing ‘many’ of Putin’s troops in Syria and says he WILL impose sanctions when they deserve it”

I know, it’s all ‘doom porn’ but SRSLY, if we were looking back from next year, would anyone be surprised?

added- ugg, I never hit “publish” and was poking around on the stats page instead of checking that it did publish, as I normally do….

Let’s pause a moment to remember what happened 23 years ago today

My sister in law worked in the Baptis Medical center just a few blocks away and was one of the first responders. My wife was on our farm 10+ miles outside OKC and heard the explosion. I was in Dallas on an LAN install and rushed home as soon as I heard.
    Where were you?

Most likely at work doing that rocket science stuff. Like GPS satellite launches that everybody uses nowadays.

It’s on sale [totally random seller] in a kit from Adventure Medical. I’ve used and recommend Adventure Medical before.

To add a “blow out kit” something like this recommended list [there is some duplication you can eliminate, or add some bandaids to the blow out kit.]
[and I’d put the quikclot in the basic list]

    Where were you?

Working for pre-Verizon GTE. I’m unclear on what I was doing specifically that day.

  7. Greg Norton says:

@Lynn — you missed the battery-powered rental scooter stupidity which debuted in Dowtown Austin this week. As if the Millennial tech workers didn’t already act like overgrown children, they have now reverted to the pre-bicycle mastery phase.

I did get accosted by three college age people aggressively asking for me to take a survey on the Nature Conservancy project on their iPad while I was waiting to cross Congress street. I suspect that they were then going to ask me for money. The man was 6’4″ or so and violated my personal space by closing to within 2 ft of me while yelling at me to do his survey. I put my arm (37 inch sleeve) out in a stiff arm and he jumped back before I pushed him back. You don’t close to anyone that close without knowing them or having a connection.

I know about the Nature Conservancy project too well. My sister-in-law’s younger sister is now running it in Texas. I have had to hear about it now several times from my SIL. But I am not allowed to talk about politics to her which gripes me to no end.

I don’t venture up to Congress very often.

During SXSW, walking down to take a look at some of the freak show, I was accosted by two “youts” aggressively distributing their rap album CDs. I’m not their target demo, and, unlike many tech types, I don’t pretend to be a fan.

(My last new album was Cats In Space “Scarecrow”)

I thought things were really going to be ugly when, walking backwards away from the offered CD, I brushed against one guy’s vintage black suede Converse “kicks”. Fortunately, the crosswalk light turned green at that moment and I headed back to the office.

23 years ago today I was sitting in my recliner recovering from surgery on my left knee (stupidest thing I ever did and paying for it dearly now). Watched CNN and listened to talk radio (as little as it was back then, mainly Limbaugh and Neil Boortz IIRC). My phone kept ringing from my boss out at Hanford’s N-Reactor. DOE in downtown Richland went into full lock-down mode. Hanford Patrol pulled out all the heavy armor, ready for an attack. The pucker factor was way off the charts and did not settle down for months.

Personally I believe it was a gooberment sting that got out of hand, but we’ll never know for sure. If somebody comes to you offering large quantities of fertilizer, run.

FL dodged a bullet when Janet Reno lost the primary to run for Governor against Jeb! in 2002. Fortunately, even FL Democrats knew she was bonkers.

@Lynn – Which ASUS laptop are you buying for employees these days?

I donated my T420 to the OFD laptop project because I was tired of hefting it around the country as my Windows laptop, but after buying/returning two Lenovo models and a Dell, I’m beginning to realize that I am spoiled on that build quality. Weight = structure.

My new company gives us HP EliteBooks. They’re ok.

  13. lynn says:

@Lynn – Which ASUS laptop are you buying for employees these days?

We don’t use laptops, we use desktops. I did buy a ultra lightweight laptop last year for the office manager (wife) to take on the road with her when she visits her father. “ASUS ZenBook Flip UX360CA 13.3″ 2-in 1 Touchscreen Laptop, Intel Core m3-7Y30, 8GB, 256GB SSD, Windows 10”
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075DHGBG5/

SSD is important for overall speed. Touchscreen is nice until you muck up the screen. The battery life is awesome since it is a 4W cpu with no fan. I took it to Austin with me and never opened the case, I just used my smarty pants phone.

“First Congregational Church of Oakland shares a neighborhood with many homeless people who often come to the church in times of mental health crises. Sometimes church members feel unequipped to deal with the erratic behavior: The most heart-wrenching scenes, volunteer leader Nichola Torbett says, are the times when the church is closing for the day, and a person with nowhere else to go absolutely refuses to leave the building.”

Wow. And the other problem with mentally ill people is that some of them are violent with no provocation whatsoever.

I see a lot of BETO stickers on cars so maybe the TX (R) Senate seat is in play this year, but I can’t imagine any Texas Democrat taking out Greg Abbott as long as he wants the job.

Maybe one of the Castro brothers will run against Abbott, and I’ll get the hilarious Univision debate I was anticipating if the stupid one (okay, they’re both stupid) took on Cruz.

Is that the dude running against Ted Cruz ? Dude, you need to get out of the Austin area. Nobody gives a flying flip about the senator campaign until Nov 1. Then about 60% of them are going to pull the R lever.

I would not believe a single poll that is out now. The only poll that matters is the registered and picture id’d voter poll on Nov 6.
    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-04-18/republican-cruz-facing-close-battle-in-texas-race-poll-finds

Looks like Ted is doing the hard thing and gonna get Trump to campaign for him.

Yeah, the BETO stickers are for Cruz’ probable opponent (did the primary happen yet?), Beto O’Rourke. He has a lot of out-of-state money backing him, particularly from CA.

I didn’t say I thought Cruz would lose, just that the seat may be in play.

  23. Greg Norton says:

My phone lit up all afternoon after CGI fired one of my former co-workers.

The guy turned in notice, and “member management” fired him in retaliation within an hour, citing a previously undisclosed expense account irregularity from a report filed three months ago.

When I submitted notice, I called my project manager in Virginia first. I told him that I wanted to let him know in case things got ugly in Belton with my local management.

Texas is always the first primary in the USA on the first Tuesday in March. Both Cruz and Beto won handily. Ted had 2X the amount of votes that Beto did.

Yes, I have been wondering if we should limit out of state money in state elections. Probably not constitutional to do that though. Shoot, I don’t even think that the federal limits on federal campaigns are constitutional once you consider the free speech aspects of money.

Hard to believe that Tom Petty has moved on. I’m sitting here rocking to “Running Down a Dream” when I should be testing my new 10,000+ lines of C++ code that I have been writing since last November. I just ported the code back to the next release version (15.13) from the main line code (16.00).

    Plus 2. 🙂

Bought a Pro 3 Core I5 (only 4GB memory) for wife and it was heavily used for her Phd work. Still going strong.

Finally bought a Pro 4 Starter Pack -or something like that- for myself when the Pro came out and prices for previous gen went down. I use it every day and definitively at night to read Galaxy Magazine. It has the same basic specifications.

The biggest gripe that I have -and a LOT of other people too- is that it would have been nice to have USB C with Thunderbolt but that is still not being provided even with the new Pro designs.

  27. JimL says:

I would agree about the Surface, but Greg was talking about durability. The Surface line isn’t built to take a licking. Other than that, I REALLY like the surface line. I would wish that Microsoft built it up like Apple does the MacBooks.

  28. JimL says:

@Nick – Slab City. Scary. I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised – there have been dropouts for as long as we’ve had cities. But some of the denizens of that fine plot are just scary. Better there than downtown.

I have a relatively recent BBC documentary on Jeff Lynne which you must see if you are a Petty fan. “Full Moon Fever” was part of the Traveling Wilbury’s era for those guys which was truly “lightning in a bottle” IMHO. I can’t believe that was 30 years ago.

I’m paid to experiment with Boost/C++11 as part of my new job. Some of the toys in that box are truly fun to play with and improve productivity.

I understand why hiring managers want to see Boost experience on a resume, but I’m proof that anyone with a solid understanding of the Standard Library can learn it on the fly. The HR droids use lack of exposure to the library as another age discrimination tactic, something which will bite them in the a** one day.

30 years ago at my church in Canberra a guy started attending called John X (I’ve forgotten what the X was) and he was kinda strange. He soon changed his surname to Mac……., I don’t remember what. I used his new surname as a courtesy, for which he thanked me. Then he stopped attending.

Next thing I read in the newspaper was his involvement in the death of a bus driver. The driver insisted that John pay the fare to use the bus, but as we all know wizards don’t pay bus fares, so John refused. The driver got so worked up he had a heart attack and died.
