10:19 – Barbara is heading down to Winston this morning to run errands and meet friends for lunch and then dinner. She won’t be back until mid-evening, so it’s wild women and parties for Colin and me today.
We got another batch of biology kits built yesterday, so we’re in pretty good shape for the next couple or three weeks unless we get a large bulk order for something. Starting today I’ll be making up more chemical solutions to fill still more bottles.
One preparedness category that’s often overlooked is having the means to prepare food during a long power outage. You may find yourself having to cook over a fire. You could use your current pots and pans, of course, but unless your everyday pots and pans are cast iron using them over a fire will probably damage or destroy them. I found that out by experience back before I met Barbara, when I tried to cook over a campfire using standard thin metal aluminum and stainless steel cookware. It just doesn’t stand up very well to flames.
With the latest delivery from Walmart.com, we now have what I consider the essential minimum cast-iron cookware: a Lodge 3-Quart Combo Cooker–which is a standard skillet and a deep skillet, either of which can be used as a lid for the other–and a Lodge 8 Quart Cast Iron Deep Camp Dutch Oven, whose legs and flat top optimize it for use over a charcoal or wood fire. The Combo Cooker can be used on a standard gas or electric cooktop, but the Camp Dutch Oven is really not suitable for use on a standard cooktop, gas or electric. We unboxed the Dutch oven to check it, but then reboxed it and stored it downstairs. The Combo Cooker lives upstairs in the kitchen, and we’re starting to use it routinely. At some point, I’ll probably add a larger skillet or two and perhaps a standard Dutch Oven for use in the kitchen.
I’m really at the point where I’m ready to blow away the Fire OS on my Fire HD7 and replace it with vanilla Android. Amazon has really butchered Fire OS, all in the interest of locking people into their walled garden and preventing them from using ad blocking software. I’ve had it. I’ll wait a couple months, until the next major release of Android, because the current version has a serious vulnerability that won’t be addressed until then. If I end up bricking my Fire, so be it.
On the personal security front, this is the THIRD story of this type in the last couple of weeks.
“Family are terrified to discover their home was invaded in the middle of the night after seeing robbers on their security cameras the next day
Invasion occurred around 3 am Monday in North Woodmere, Long Island
Four men broke into the house while the family inside slept
Two entered while the other two waited outside on guard
Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3745132/Family-terrified-discover-home-invaded-middle-night-seeing-robbers-security-cameras-day.html”
People only knew they’d been violated when they reviewed the footage.
Harden your access, get at least a basic alarm (DIY wireless is easy to install, relatively cheap- has some issues but better than nothing), get some cameras up.

“… what I consider the essential minimum cast-iron cookware: a Lodge 3-Quart Combo Cooker–which is a standard skillet and a deep skillet, either of which can be used as a lid for the other–and a Lodge 8 Quart Cast Iron Deep Camp Dutch Oven…”
We’ve got some Lodge stuff here, also some old yard-sale cast iron stuff that I’ve cleaned up and re-seasoned, plus an assortment of the Le Creuset enameled cast-iron pots and pans. You may wanna look into picking up one or two cast-iron cookbooks; Lodge has several.
“I’m really at the point where I’m ready to blow away the Fire OS…”
I’ve had my Fire HDX or whatever it is for a couple of years now, maybe three years, and the only complaint I have is that it takes a while to charge back up, like 2.5-3 hours, from zero. Haven’t had an issue with the ads except for theirs when I first turn it on, and then not again. And I still mostly use the Silk browser, too.
Before you brick it you might wanna glance here:
http://www.lovemyfire.com/
Also, AdBlock-Plus should work on the Fire OK.
You can also “side-load” apps to the Fire.
Some more info here:
http://www.mobicpc.com/how-to-block-ads-on-amazon-kindle-fire-hd.html
You can’t install the Firefox APK directly on the HD7?
Mozilla makes the APK available as a download. Enable developer mode on the Kindle and use the Android adb tool to perform the install.
I installed Firefox and FDroid on a Fire Phone without any problems via APKs. Adblock Plus, Ghostery, and the other supported addons are available inside Firefox. FDroid installs email apps (K9 Mail and others) that work reasonably well as an alternative to Amazon’s ad-supported app.
To answer the question in advance — I bought the Fire Phone surplus on EBay and don’t run a SIM in the Fire Phone. The privacy invasion with the phone and cell network combination is truly a Deal with Satan -er- Bezos. The camera and photo sharing is really handy for vacations, however; photos sync to the Amazon cloud as soon as we get back within range of hotel WiFi.
UPDATE: Taking another look at my Fire, I remember that I was able to install the APK directly from the Amazon browser. Start at “firefox.com/m”. The security settings may require changes to allow the third party app.
I should have mentioned that I downgraded my Fire HD7 from Fire OS 5.x to 4.x because I couldn’t stand having the home and back icons at the bottom of the display instead of the side.
I did have Firefox installed on FOS 5.x as you describe, but apparently there’s no Firefox for FOS 4.x. I ended up installing a complete piece of crap from Firefox’s development stream, called Aurora. It crashes literally every four or five minutes. I ended up doing a reset to factory defaults on my Fire. I expected it to install FOS 5.x, but it reinstalled FOS 4.x. I can’t figure out how to upgrade it back up to 5.x.
AdBlock Plus on FOS5/Firefox was total crap. I ended up installing uBlock Origin, which worked pretty well. I wish I could get back to that config. Having the icons at the bottom of the display is a PITA, but it’s better than what I’ve had since I downgraded.
WRT to cooking without electricity: This past weekend I browsed a bunch of what I’ll call “alternative lifestyle” rather than “prepper” sites, all on YouTube.
This lady:
Appalachia’s Homestead with Patara has an interesting site with an interesting perspective.
This is the start of series where she is cooking stored food in cast iron on a wood stove:

Because these are YouTube “bloggers” it takes them forever to get the information out, so be patient.
BTW, the href tagging works, but even with cutting and pasting to a “format” takes some time and care.
The problem with installing Cyanogenmod is that paid development stopped. Support for various devices will be hit or miss.
I run a Nexus 7 2012 model with Cyanogenmod, and the security patches have been spotty since Cyanogen Inc. laid off the paid OS developers in Seattle to focus on apps.
(Gotta wonder if the Cyanogen Inc. management has been imbibing a little too much of the legal weed in WA State.)
Enjoy your new cast-iron cookware! We don’t seem to be able to get Lodge brand stuff here in Europe, which is a great pity; Le Creuset cast cookware, from France, is ubiquitous and of wonderful quality, but very expensive, while the cheaper alternatives are not really acceptable.
You might take a look at the “cooking” and “camping” sections of the late Junior Doughty’s website at http://www.castbullet.com/ for some decent recipe ideas and techniques for your new pots and pans.
For your preparedness, remember that you need a way (or several ways) to start your fires. Even if you have plenty of matches, saving the cotton lint from your dryer makes for great tinder. If you soak it in petroleum jelly it is a great portable firelighter, provided you have some means of making a spark.
“Because these are YouTube “bloggers” it takes them forever to get the information out, so be patient.”
Doncha hate that? A lot of Toob vids could be cut drastically. The usual two minutes of shitty unknown blaring rock and then a lotta blather and chatter before they get to the nuts and bolts. There are a handful of guys that don’t do this and I subscribe to them only.

Doors and windows. Timers on lights and radios. Get a dog; if nothing else, one with a good loud bark on him or her.
A potential use for the dutch oven.

I was experimenting with that recipe when we still lived in WA State, but I got busy and haven’t had time recently.
Even the failures (I produced several) are still delicious.
There’s nothing like a 17# wiener dog charging down the stairs in the middle of the night to wake you up. I hate it when it’s windy and he’s growling and charging all night. Better safe than sorry, though.
I keep my WP account open in a tab next to ttgnet. If I post with links and stuff, I compose it in “visual” on my WP and change to html view to copy and post. With advanced editing on, it has everthing I need to post html correctly.
That recipe is very similar to the one we’ve been using for a year or so. We just made it last night. We’ve tried various no-knead bread recipes, but the one we keep coming back to is this one:
http://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/no-knead-crusty-white-bread-recipe
We tried it using silicone loaf pans, but we both prefer simple ball loaves. We make the dough as specified, but divide it into only two ball loaves rather than the three or four they mention. We bake it on a cookie sheet with cooking spray or parchment paper. The real trick is pouring a cup of water into a hot pan on the lower rack to generate steam that causes the crust to brown.
Minor variations don’t seem to affect the finished loaves much. The really important thing is the ratio of flour to water in making up the dough.
I’ve switch to making no-knead in a bread pan. The family likes it better for small sandwiches. We’re going through 3-4 loaves a week now.
We still make sandwiches with store-bought bread. We just eat the homemade bread in chunks with dinners and so on.
Incidentally, a bit of the Augason Farms butter powder mixed with vegetable oil makes a pretty decent substitute for butter.
I’ve been reading articles on Obolacare now that is fully “implemented” and bragged about by libturds. Is everyone enjoying that $2,500.00 savings you should be getting by now?
I appear to have given my savings to someone else, and then given the same again to the insurer….

Speaking of youtubers who go on and on….
TRX Bench is an awesome channel for learning about radio repair and ham electronics. His step by step troubleshooting is the best.
Mr Carlson’s Lab is another great radio repair channel, but focused on tube radio and test equipment.
Both are long winded, but that is often exactly what you need when trying to learn about this stuff. Too little explanation and it just looks like magic. I will admit, I often fall asleep watching the more ‘classroom’ videos. I still recommend them if you have an interest in the subject matter.

“I appear to have given my savings to someone else, and then given the same again to the insurer….”
You, too? It must be “going round.” With another hefty slice for the gummint.
Another Toob channel for ham radio is Dave Casler’s. He walks you through the various license exam topics among a bunch of other stuff and it’s well organized.
Isn’t Mrs. OFD getting the special rate of $0 since she can’t even qualify yet? What a bargain!
No shortage of gummint bargains and they’re making every effort to satisfy us and make our lives so much easier! My hat’s off to these sterling examples of how we can all work together and herald a whole new age of wonders and marvels and the brave new world to come!
Just wasted some time on FB. The stupidity on display is astounding.

There is an entire couple of generations with no real knowledge of history, and no critical thinking skills, who get their news from FB memes and satirical comedy shows. We’re fucked.

Is everyone enjoying that $2,500.00 savings you should be getting by now?
You bet. My price for insurance for just my wife is $731 a month with a 2,500 deductible and $5,000 maximum out of pocket. What a bargain. Of course if I was a loser who was too lazy to work my cost for a better plan would be about $50 a month. I have only a $1200 a month income yet have to pay two thirds of that for insurance with Obuttwad. Add in my medicare premiums and supplemental the total amount is $1,000 a month. All because I made too much money before my retirement.
Next year when I get SS along with my wife (who will be 62 but will start drawing against my earnings), I will still be paying about $12,000 a year, fully a third of my income from all sources. What a bargain. For crappy insurance.
Thanks Obama, you flaming asshole. What do you care? You have a three or four private physicians and surgeons, round the clock medical attention, all at zero cost. Have you any concept of paying for anything Obama you blithering idiot?
“Just wasted some time on FB. The stupidity on display is astounding.”
Bailed out from that quite a while ago for the same reason, plus the ‘preaching to the choir’ of “friends,” where we simply just rehashed old shit and reacted to any new shit with the same kinda shit. Waste of time, effort and bandwidth while Zuckerberg and his minions watch you, sell shit to you and rake in billions themselves while pushing lefty causes and projects and practicing censorship on “conservatives.”
“Of the top of my head, I could have answered ABE LINCOLN, if freeing the slaves doesn’t count WTF would?”
It counts for shit in my book because it was a terribly cynical ploy to punish the South, prolong the war and make himself look like the Messiah’s return. A wartime tactic, pure and simple. And the worst President in our history, who got us 600,000 war dead, countless civilians dead and their properties destroyed, the South’s economy decimated, and to this day rancor and bitterness in spades throughout. Most in the North were taught, as I was, the North’s radical abolitionist version of that history. A tiny minority of us found out differently, eventually.
“There is an entire couple of generations with no real knowledge of history, and no critical thinking skills, who get their news from FB memes and satirical comedy shows. We’re fucked.”
There it is. And it’s all been deliberate and with malice aforethought. They are now fodder. And yes, we’re fucked, basically.
My generation is probably the last one to still have regular readers of books and some kind of grasp of fucking reality. Though, truth be told, it’s also the Boomer Generation, mostly spoiled-rotten libturd asswipes, most of whom never served in the armed forces or worked with their hands at real manual labor.
“Have you any concept of paying for anything Obama you blithering idiot?”
Nope. And neither did/do the Klinton Krime Family, the Bush Crime Family, etc. A total clusterfuck that is impoverishing the working generation/s for lousier benefits, if any. And again I say, done deliberately and with malice aforethought.
We can expect to struggle the remaining years of our lives after busting our asses and/or serving in the military for decades and decades, like that snail on the edge of the razor; on one side is poverty and sickness; on the other, repression.
And expected to welcome hordes of hostile crimigrants with open arms and joy and wallets.
If you needed another reason to stay away from walmart:
“Shoplifting, a meth lab and a violent offense a DAY: America’s Walmart stores are crime-ridden ‘because cost-cutting company relies on cops to do its security work’
Walmart is under fire from cops across America who say it attracts crime
One violent offense occurred a day in Walmart stores in the past year
The company has cut staff and increased profits dramatically since 2006
Cops say reduced staff means more crime, and they’re filling the gaps
But to get staff levels back up to 2006 levels would cost $3.25billion
Walmart says it only needs to retrain and relocate its existing staff
It has been running a crime reduction plan since last year
Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3745665/Walmart-stores-crime-ridden-company-cut-staff-increase-profits-relying-police-gaps-cops-say.html”
One way this can affect people who don’t even shop there– many people who do craigslist will meet in a walmart parking lot. The idea is that there are cameras, lots of people around, and everyone knows where walmart is. It’s NOT safe! Meet in front of the police station, at a bank, or look if your community has set up monitored ‘exchange areas.’

A lot of folks with those gigantic RV’s were parking in Wall-Mutt lots, overnight, too; dunno if that’s still the case.
With all due disrespect for WalMart, any crowded busy venue
is gonna attract crime, just statistically. Of course, a high
cost of admission will filter out most of the riff-raff, like at a
sports event or concert… or not…
“Of course, a high
cost of admission will filter out most of the riff-raff, like at a
sports event or concert… or not…”
Hmmmm….I wonder what the admission price was for that club in Orlando…
…and that rock concert in Paris…
The fucking billionaire family that runs Wall-Mutt needs to spring for better security staff and training thereof on its properties, cut and dried. How many billions do they need? And no, I’m not a commie agitator, either. But as a biz owner, you’re responsible for YOUR property, not the local constabulary. Who tell us repeatedly that they ain’t responsible for shit, anyway. Spend a few mill on retail security, beef it up in the parking lots. Forgo a minute’s greens fees or yacht berth rental. Or eventually get sued to hell and back by somebody who gets hurt.
Hmmmm….now I’m wondering if there have been any such suits and if they went the distance or got settled….
The diffs between the Daily Mail version of that WalMart story
and the original(?) at Bloomberg are interesting.
I had already read the Bloomberg version…
May I suggest using (sadly enough) Google news instead of
Drudge for your news summaries?
I am certainly no fan of “main stream media” but I try to
avoid tabloids… (or, OK, keep the real usefulness of a story
in mind, and consider the source)…
I once talked to a WalMart lawyer named, I shit you not, David Billions.
Wally does all they can to beat down any claim of responsibility for
anything (a customer fall, in that case) and I do agree that they should
do more to keep customers safe. Unfortunately, keeping the business
going and profitable has to be priority one for a business. I think there’s
likely to be a tipping point at which customers are afraid to venture there
for even crazy low prices, if they don’t maintain a safe facility… duh.
WRT Walmart security: How secure is a place that uses very senior citizens (many walk more unsteady than I do) and Special Services (handicapped/retarded) people for greeters and store security. These folks may be nice and I make it a point to be nice back to them, but to daily put them in extremely compromising situations is criminal. It’s great that these have jobs, but these are not appropriate jobs.
Our local Walmart (there are 3 in the Tri-Cities area) is the best of one in our area; clean inside and out, well stocked, and Mexican clerks who can speak understandable English. I have only been in about a dozen other Walmarts and they were places that I would never return, no matter how good the prices.
(Did I get in enough microaggressions?)
Spook, google news has a well documented far left slant, with outright censorship. [added thru suppression of search results]
Most of the mainstream media now exists as nothing more than a mouthpiece for the political elite and the progressive agenda.
At least with a tabloid based outside the US they will print the stories. I’ve made the case for the UK Daily Mail in other posts, based on what they report, not necessarily how they report it.
You’re right, the Bloomberg story is an interesting contrast:
https://www.bloomberg.com/features/2016-walmart-crime/
And worth the time to read and compare the two versions as a lesson in media manipulation.
Doesn’t change the fact that walmart is NOT a safe place to be, relative to other retailers.
nick
“”Hmmmm….I wonder what the admission price was for that club in Orlando…
…and that rock concert in Paris…””
Valid point. I said ” or not ” since I have seen instances in which the
paying patrons did their best to trash the whole purpose of the show.
But, hmm… Orlando killer probably didn’t slow down to pay the
cover charge when he went in shooting.
I guess I meant mostly that lots of kids and punks go to WalMart
late at night out of boredom or whatever it is.
Oddly, too, though, I recall Mom fretting when I mentioned going
to WalMart (or similar) late at night and she just could not understand
that less traffic, much less traffic, greatly lowers the odds of any sort
of confrontation or mishap, deliberate or accidental.
Minor variations don’t seem to affect the finished loaves much. The really important thing is the ratio of flour to water in making up the dough.
Yes. I was working on the right water/flour ratio for Portlandia when bread experiments stopped for grad school.
Shoulda stuck to bread experiments. Much more productive use of time.
“”A lot of folks with those gigantic RV’s were parking in Wall-Mutt lots, overnight, too; dunno if that’s still the case.””
@OFD…
Not sure what you mean in this context? My impression is that the RV folk are
well-behaved, might wake up to report crime in the lot, and probably spend
money (evening and/or morning), bringing benefit to the local community.
I guess if they are in brightly colored wagons, and dance around a fire, one
might be suspicious…
“(Did I get in enough microaggressions?)”
You’ve shown progress but may I suggest Mr. SteveF, myself, MrAtoz and Mr. Ray for some nice examples of being very free with micro-aggressions and not worrying a whole lot about trigger warnings and safe spaces here. Of course, this will also get you a spot next to us against the firing squad wall or up on the gallows…so there’s that…
“Most of the mainstream media now exists as nothing more than a mouthpiece for the political elite and the progressive agenda.
+1,000 And make that “a worshipful and adoring mouthpiece that is virulent, aggressive and hostile to its perceived enemies…” for the political elite, etc.
“… I said ” or not ” since I have seen instances in which the
paying patrons did their best to trash the whole purpose of the show.”
Point taken. Yeah, the miscreants and felonious goblins involved are usually “teens.”
“Not sure what you mean in this context? My impression is that the RV folk are
well-behaved, might wake up to report crime in the lot, and probably spend
money (evening and/or morning), bringing benefit to the local community.”
Oh, agreed; I was thinking of them as potential vics out there, very vulnerable in the absence of any security other than their own and the occasional prowling patrol car from the local huckleberries.
You forgot to mention that when you see a microaggression, you should shriek like a drag queen with a torn stocking.
Oh, wait. Was that a microaggression?
Eeeeeeeeeeeek!
Can’t you hear my shrieking down there in the Capital District? It’s only a six-hour drive…
“”Oh, agreed; I was thinking of them as potential vics out there, very vulnerable in the absence of any security other than their own and the occasional prowling patrol car from the local huckleberries.””
I would reckon that anything short of a small army or a large riot would be
unpleasantly surprised upon attacking the typical rich folk RV.
Of course, this will also get you a spot next to us against the firing squad wall
Yeh, we are already on the NSA radar and every other three letter spook agency (with apologies to Mr. Spook) run by the government. I suspect that blacked out Suburban that runs by my house twice a day is not looking for illegals. Or is that vehicle the local school bus with some special youngun’s.

No spy, no racial implication.
No, today’s blacked out SUV here was a Tahoe, I think.
I just figured your real name must be Wellington J. Farnsworth.
I figured his name was Sue because his father had taken Johnny Cash’s song as advice. Or maybe his mixed English-Japanese ancestry resulted in his being named Ichi Cockburn. Or…

Wow. I had no idea… Or I just forgot…
Shoulda looked long ago. Thanks! Need to read up on this.

“I suspect that blacked out Suburban that runs by my house twice a day is not looking for illegals. Or is that vehicle the local school bus with some special youngun’s.””
No blacked-out SUVs around here that I’ve ever seen; mil-spec vehicles, though, but we have a substantial Guard and Reserve presence in the greater 50-mile AO. I do see and hear, however, mil-spec choppers overhead a lot. What’s to look at in this little village on the bay??? Well, there’s the border, I guess; and they have caught smugglers and dope dealer types screwing around in the woods up there, about ten miles north of us. Also, one musloid that we know of. And illegal crimigrants occasionally. Plus the lake extends well into O Kanada. So I doubt they’re the least bit interested in little ol’ me, just a decrepit, dilapidated ol’ semi-retired pooter jockey.
I have seen quite a few military helicopters in various places,
and I was able to “justify” them with the presumption that
they had training missions on some arbitrary routes that
had nothing to do with me… but…
Did have the local cop chopper buzzing all around one night.
I hit ’em with a big 12-volt spotlight (not all that serious, like
an H-3 bulb) and they have never buzzed close in the years
since. It did hit me that they probably “investigated” me and
decided not to SWAT me that night, but I guess I’ll never know.
Choppers orbiting are so common in Los Angeles that you learn to tune them out. One night, I kept turning the tv up, and finally cried out in frustration, “Why can’t I hear the F’ing TV?” My roommate laughed and said “Maybe it’s because of that chopper hovering over the back yard.” F’ing chopper was orbiting over our yard, sun light on, shining down into neighbors yards for about 10 minutes. Then it just left. I hadn’t even noticed it.
nick
“”I hadn’t even noticed it””
If I notice med-evac helicopters, of which there are plenty
around here, it’s just long enough to hope for the best…
Those copters do have a pretty distinctive sound, and they
obviously are not circling around.
“med-evac helicopters,” whenever I see one I acknowledge that someone is having a bad day, and offer up a bit of what someone who was religious might call prayer.
n
At least one of those crypto-choppers had to have had MrAtoz flying it. Didn’t even call me for door gunner tasks.
60s here tonight after several days of mostly light, but sometimes heavy, rain. Praise the Lord.
Contractor coming tomorrow to give us an estimate on installing the new windows in the studio/shed for Mrs. OFD.
And I gotta do a new minor re-org of the office here; stuff just seems to keep accumulating and piling up.

Or it’s an affluent commuter who got the black-out options package.

Yep. Like I said, hope for the best.
Same for ambulances, fire engines…
Just have to hope that cop-cars haulin’ ass don’t kill somebody
on the way. They scare me almost as much as the dump trucks.
Blackhawks around all the time here out of Nellis and A51. The Vegas RJ is reporting a lot of unmarked civvie jet traffic to A51 lately. Getting ready to activate Cankles’ clone when she kicks, I guess.
No blacked-out SUVs around here that I’ve ever seen
Or it’s an affluent commuter who got the black-out options package
Actually see a lot those vehicles around here. Security vehicles for trucks transporting nuclear material. A black Surbuban heavily armored followed by a heavily armored tractor and trailer, followed by a couple more Surbubans heavily armored. Truck may just be transporting a kilogram of material if that much. Tires are all able to run at speed for miles with multiple bullet holes. Try to open the trailer doors (there are multiple doors to get through) without the proper procedure and the interior fills with toxic gas (as in deadly), axles jam and all kinds of alarms activate. All vehicles tracked by satellite. Drivers and others in the vehicles heavily armed.
I have seen as many as five such convoys leaving the plant. Only one of them has the actual material, the others are decoys. All take different routes to the final destination and some even go to completely different destinations so you don’t know where the material is being transported.
Of course I will now get a visit from the NSA and multiple other spook agencies for telling you all this (I am under no secrecy oath). If you don’t hear from me for awhile you know what happened.
I was hoping for an uparmor package to come up in one of my auctions but the ‘local huckleberries’ don’t go in for armor, I guess.
n
http://www.pro-gard.com/product-tag/bullet-proof-door-panel/
“I was hoping for an uparmor package…”
Huh. Nuthin’ for MY vehicle there. Bummer. I may have to jury-rig something, maybe as simple as opening up the inside panels just enough to slide ballistic plates in there. And get ballistic film for all the glass, ditto the ground-floor windows here.
“If you don’t hear from me for awhile you know what happened.”
Yeah, sure. You’ll be called back to your old job and busier than a one-legged guy in an ass-kicking contest, trying to fix all the damage done by your successor and fill in until they can start the hiring process again for someone else.
So fah as I know, the only nuke material in Vermont is at the now-being-decommissioned Yankee power plant downstate on the Connecticut River.

Something that might amuse some people here. It’s a transcript (typed by yours truly) of a BBC “Best of Today” podcast.
Zack Twamley, at least in the first several months’ of episodes that I’ve listened to so far, doesn’t have the dry sense of humor of Mike Duncan (“The History of Rome” and “Revolutions”) or Scott Cheswick (“The Ancient World”). Still, he has an interesting take on what he covers.
My favorite Cheswick line: “Imaninbred III died of a hippo attack. He was the first king of Egypt to die in this manner. Bizarrely, he was not the last.”
Nice transcript; they’d fit right in at any Murkan college humanities department, too. Stupid bints. I like this quote, from some hater out there:
“… a man needs a woman like a fish needs a tapeworm.”
Hater!
“He was the first king of Egypt to die in this manner. Bizarrely, he was not the last.”
And one wonders how many lowly commoners died of hippo attacks over the centuries; what a horrible way to go, almost worse than a gator attack. Avoid.
That’s right: avoid areas where there are gators and hippos. Just as you should avoid cities and crowds.
No gators or hippos up here and crowds are rare, and so far I’ve avoided them.
[snip] Choppers orbiting are so common in Los Angeles that you learn to tune them out. [snip]
I am reliably informed that in Los Angeles, police & television helicopters are known as “ghetto birds”. Of course, I’m in one of the most heavily militarized parts of the country, so seeing helicopters, fighters, transports, etc is an everyday thing. The AWACS birds look really cool, and one guy with whom I used to play golf was a door gunner on an Osprey (Uncle Sam will hand a Ma Duece on anything). He said they were nifty keen.
I have heard the ‘ghetto birds’ name before, from a teacher in south central….

Ain’t gonna happen. I have decided I am done and will not go back for any price.
Regarding the BBC complaints by two women about porn, I will say that I see their point to some small extent. IMHO sex is not a spectator sport. Also, this flawed, imperfect thing called Western Civilization was built largely by men who were trying to get laid. Despite my criticism of Western Civilization, I am quite fond of it.
However, while I can see there point, on balance I have to say while I don’t see porn as a good thing, I understand why males are more attracted to it in modern times. A porn movie has never said it was raped or sexually harassed. If one doesn’t frequent bars or date coworkers, how exactly is one supposed to find someone to not watch porn with? I’d take sex with a real live woman who realizes what opposites attract and men are not all potential rapists over watching porn.
So I think they’re complaining that because of porn they can’t find dates. With some women today, that’s because no sane guy would want to date them. It’s not because of a few extra pounds, it’s because of excess baggage.
Just made a business trip to Rochester with a hotel right downtown. Very uncomfortable feeling being out of my element. Several obviously homeless people wandering downtown. Just made eye contact, watched, and hoped.
