09:56 – August is starting out faster than usual. We shipped seven kits Tuesday, three yesterday, and four today. We also have several more kits that we’re awaiting checks or POs on. We’re averaging four+ kits per day, which is fast for early August. Things should pick up even more in the next week or ten days. So we’re building more kits in anticipation, which means I need to get more components on order today and tomorrow.
Our climate isn’t quite a temperate rain forest, which requires 60 inches of rain annually, but at an average of 56 inches, we’re not far off. It’s raining as I write. In the last week, we’ve had about 5.5 inches (14 cm) of rain, with more in prospect. I think of July and August as dry months, which they’ve been everywhere I’ve lived, but not up here in Sparta. That’s good in several ways, not least that it makes rainwater harvesting a practical alternative for emergency water.
The other different thing about the climate up here is the earliest frost date. I think of September as a warm month, the end of summer, and October as a time of warm days and chilly nights. Up here, our earliest freeze date is in early September, only a month from now. We could go from temperatures near body temperature to freezing temperatures with snow and ice in only a month.
Here is our data for frost:
September 28 through May 13.
frost from October 11 through April 28.
usually no frost from May 29 through September 14.
Our normal frost-free growing season is around 138 days.
So we have about eight weeks until the first possible frost. On a small plot half unusable thanks to the septic/leach config and a lot of shade above. Some creativity called for via portable grow bags and containers; the realization that we will never be able to feed ourselves from this lot; the need to stockpile with staples, canned goods and the root cellar; and the future desirability of hooking up with local neighbors and farms to set up cooperative gardens.
Sun and blue skies and heat today; off shortly for PT and the vets group.
Here is our data for frost:
Frost? Wut dat?
It’s when the sand gets really, really cold.
And the zombie strippers are shivering uncontrollably and you can see yer breath in the air as you’re panting and watching them jiggle.

I wonder if Obutthole gave them their shooster guns back.
No, he was busy elsewhere, but Eric said he’d take care of it. Eric’s got lots of experience supplying gangbangers and narcotrafficantes and getting Fed agents murdered.
Where’s Eric now?
“n July 2015, Holder rejoined Covington & Burling, the law firm at which he worked before becoming Attorney General. The law firm’s clients have included many of the large banks Holder declined to prosecute for their alleged role in the financial crisis. Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone opined about the move, “I think this is probably the single biggest example of the revolving door that we’ve ever had.”
And succeeded by the lovely and brilliant Loretta Lynch. What a country!

What is this frost that you speak of ?
@lynn, you don’t remember the snow we got a couple of years ago? I’ve got pix of my daughter on a blanket of snow in the front yard……
n
I feel sorry for you guys that don’t have the four seasons. We kind of had four seasons in Winston, but up here we have four seasons in spades.
Oh, wait, was that a microaggression?
Florida has 4 seasons: Summer, Hurricane Season, Snowbird Season (Wish it was no limit), and Spring.
@lynn, you don’t remember the snow we got a couple of years ago? I’ve got pix of my daughter on a blanket of snow in the front yard……
I was messing with @Bob. But, we have not had any snow out here in Sugar Land in five years or so.
We did get eight inches of snow here the day after my wife was diagnosed with stage 2b breast cancer. That was Christmas day of 2004, I remember it all too well.
South Texas has four seasons ! Long shirt sleeve season (November – March), preliminary air conditioning season (April – June), hurricane season (June – October), and Oh My Goodness air conditioning season (July – October). Some of those seasons overlap a bit.
Southern Florida had 4 seasons, Early summer, summer, late summer, and just like summer.
Five seasons here: Fall, Winta, Mud Season, Spring, and Summer on July 4th.
Three seasons here:
1. Nice.
2. Hot.
3. CME

My rule: If you have virus, trojan, and/or ransomware problems in your company, your employees are bored and doing things online that they *really* shouldn’t be doing at work — mostly porn and overseas movie and software downloads. A few highly visible firings will work better than any tech you could buy from Symantec, MacAfee, etc.
This is based on 17 years doing various security-related development chores in corporate services for the telecom Co-Dominium.
When I was working at a (dysfunctional) family-owned financial services firm down in MA back in ’06-’07, we caught one guy surfing porn at his desktop in an open area where other staff could walk back and forth in back of him, thus seeing whatever he was doing. Fired immediately. How stupid is that? Wait—a woman who was playing online poker for money at her desktop; she was warned and her internet access turned off. So she brought in one of those ubiquitous AOL CDs and loaded that in there and got on somehow, I forget exactly how, and got bagged again, and then fired. The Winblows guy doing the monitoring was using WebSense on a dedicated Winblows server.
Saw two other guys get fired at EDS eight years prior to that; one had inadvertently left an email copy of a risque joke on one of the copiers and one of the fembats saw it and had a hissy fit and he was fired immediately; escorted to the exit by security with the full perp walk and his pathetic box of stuff. Then our senior Oracle/VMS DBA was fired. Why? He slapped the table in the conference room at a meeting to emphasize a point and a special snowflake BLM-type female complained that he scared her. Fired.
It’s now been eighteen years since those firings and EDS is long gone now; but imagine how much worse it is now in the prolecube office farms. Look at somebody wrong and you’re fired; DON’T look at somebody and ditto. No jokes. No humor. God forbid any chatter about politics or religion. Relentlessly and RUTHLESSLY monitor and purge your own language constantly (advanced practitioners, like SJWs, can do this in their heads, to the exclusion, of course, of logic and reason).
Gee whiz, we were just gassing about this the other night…

This guy thinks Trump will make things better or not make things as bad, etc., but man, every day it looks more and more like he’s torpedoing his own campaign. Somebody get to him? Threats to his family? Or was this the plan all along?
Who would the dumbo Repub cretins put in his place? Hell, throw Jebster in there, so it’ll be a TOTAL landslide.
Once the creature is in, we’ll all be forced finally to get down to brass tacks and cowboy up.
I’m always asking MrsAtoz to fire me. Dirty jokes, been texting risque Disney Character drawings to her at DW, alligator jokes, etc.. She just piles on more work.
What am I doing wrong?
If tRump is off his rocker as the libturds say, maybe he’ll pack heat and take out Cankles during the first debate. Empty the mag in her, just to be sure. I can fantasize* can’t I?

I went to lunch yesterday at Rudy’s BBQ. They make all the employees wear tshirts that say on the back, “I did not claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat vegetables”.
http://www.rudysbbq.com/store/p-32-food-chain-t-shirt.aspx
Works for me.
“What am I doing wrong?”
Your question is in the present tense, hombre.
“I can fantasize* can’t I?”
Hee-hee. One of the guys at the vets group today (not me, of course) said he “wouldn’t mind putting a bullet through her head.”
I only fantasized about asking Mrs. OFD “What the fuck is WRONG with you???” But as has been bruited about here before, domestic peace is a good thing to be wished for and nurtured.
“Works for me.”
Ditto. Although we don’t eat much meat here; maybe a couple of times a week.
There’s a restaurant, I assume it’s a chain, called Texas Roadhouse, down in lovely Williston, VT, and we’ve been there two or three times. Some of the steaks I’ve seen people gobble down were the size of friggin’ Buicks. Giant slabs two inches thick and overlapping bloody platters. Of course a lot of, hell, most of, the other peeps in there weighed twice as much as me or looked it, and usually half a foot to a foot shorter, too. Male AND female.
But I do likes me my Tex-Mex stuff.
I went to lunch yesterday at Rudy’s BBQ.
I *love* Rudy’s. When we lived by SeaWorld in SA, there was a Rudy’s 5 minutes away. We usually needed a forklift for takeout. Plus buckets of cream corn, please.

I just texted her Minnie’s mugshot. She liked that since she said Minnie stole Mickey from her 50 years ago. Whore!

Yup, got one of those in just any city of any size in Texas and Oklahoma. Sounds like they be getting around the place. Try the sweet potato fries, that is the taste of real lard !
Ditto. Although we don’t eat much meat here; maybe a couple of times a week.
I eat a lot of chicken nowadays. Had a grilled chicken market salad with avocado lime ranch on it for lunch today from Chickfila. But I like beef one or two days a week.

Speaking of, how am I going to go out to eat lunch everyday after the you know what hits the fan ? Going to be tough out there, tough I tell you.

Ok, do you love it or is it the worst BBQ ? The meat is awesome, the sides sucks. There is no jambalaya, corn on the cob, green beans, or ranch beans. But I like my brisket lean with bark on it.
I could eat jambalaya until the cows come home. And then some. My regular BBQ joint has it. Smoked chicken and jambalaya, now that is a meal !
http://www.brookstreetbbq.com/
And the funny thing is that Brook Street BBQ is owned by a muslim. And their special is always pulled pork.
“Speaking of, how am I going to go out to eat lunch everyday after the you know what hits the fan ? Going to be tough out there, tough I tell you.”
Long pig within walking distance, roasting slowly on greased truck axle spits over rubbish fires. Bring your choice of hot sauce; we like Frank’s. And something to wash it all down with. Lone Star Beer? Dos Equis?
Ok, do you love it or is it the worst BBQ ?
That was the logo at our local branch. Good chow.
I used to get so sick of TX barbecue. When we would tour thru the ‘mid south’ we’d get bbq at every stop. No one seemed to consider that we’d already have gotten the regional specialties at the previous 10 stops.
Funny story though, one of the girls on the crew was a vegetarian. VERY tough to be a vegetarian on the road, esp in the South. On one dinner break we all went to the local BBQ joint, (of course, ’cause it was open). She explained to the server that she was a vegetarian and didn’t eat meat, and was there anything there she could order? Without missing a beat the server says, you can get the salad. Great she says, I’ll have one. When it comes, it’s made with bacon. Welcome to the South, where even the salad greens come with meat!
Touring thru the upper mid west, Chicago and such, you will get sausage with every meal. Awesome if you like sausage. Not so awesome if you are a veggie….
And you have to love Scotland, our hotel had at least 6 different meats with BREAKFAST. So tasty!
nick
You’d love Scandinavia even more. 40 varieties of herring for dinner. Only seven varieties for breakfast.
LOVED Norway. Ate fish at every meal.
Breakfast had at least 3 different potted fish, smoked and creamed fish on toast, smoked salmon, fresh bread, cheese, oh my.
nick
Also ate reindeer, horse, and whale while I was there.
Whale is DELICIOUS.

What, no haggis?
It’s now been eighteen years since those firings and EDS is long gone now.
Nope. Its called HP Enterprise. They’re putting the band back together, just like the old GTE now called Frontier.
I sat next to a real deal blue suit, red tie EDS guy at corporate training about … jeesh … 20 years ago, and he told stories about the new recruit training under the Perot regime — psych exercises where the new employees were revved up to the point of fistfights. He smiled and said “Good times”.
I know I came off as harsh with regard to firing, but I view the antivirus products as a racket in the full legal sense of the word. Common sense is sorely lacking in the corporate world these days.
I was nearly fired in the 90s for playing with an early iteration of nmap on the corporate LAN. After management chewed me out, the woman in the next cube over and asked if her daytrading of stocks (all day, every day) was gonna get noticed.
There’s a restaurant, I assume it’s a chain, called Texas Roadhouse, down in lovely Williston, VT.
Its a chain. A gen-u-ine slice of Texas … headquartered in Indianapolis. 🙂
Despite living in the heart of Texas BBQ country we do frequent Rudys. The kids dig the turkey, and the wife digs the fancy touches … like utensils.
I don’t think it was harsh at all; make a few examples. A down-and-out IT network at an organization due to these shenanigans is no laughing matter. Money and JOBS are at stake.
And yes, I was aware that HP bought EDS (and Compaq, and DEC) earlier; they’ve since palmed off their OpenVMS division, though. I knew one person, a female sys admin at DEC when I was there in the late 80s, who has survived all this time through all those iterations and is now at HP in a senior position. We’re connected on Linked-In. And my next-younger brother worked for HP with HP-UX for quite a while back then, too.
The Plano HQ would visit us in Waltham, MA occasionally, but generally left us alone, and that included the dress code.

Her voters will still vote for her; wouldn’t matter if she was on live tee-vee cutting up babies with a chainsaw on the Capitol steps. And by “her voters” I include any RINO traitors who actually vote for her, too.
Ah fuck it; she’s got the Electoral College locked up already anyway. And Trump keeps detonating his own campaign.
Tool up, fratres et sorores….

Any reasonably competent restaurant with reasonably well-trained servers
should be able to enter “no meat” and maybe even “no gluten” into the
computer terminal. Of course, there could likely be minor cross-contamination,
but at least it ain’t obvious enough (except for peanuts? man, that’s whacked).
On the other hand, hand-written local non-chain restaurants have their major
advantages, like good unique flavors and quality.

Two swell paras from the Woodpile Report:
“History Today – Increasing quantities of Chinese documents older than 30 years have become available for consultation to professional historians. Take, for instance, the Great Leap Forward from 1958 to 1962, the true dimensions of what happened are only now coming to light thanks to the meticulous reports the party itself compiled during the famine. What comes out of this massive and detailed dossier is a tale of horror in which Mao emerges as one of the greatest mass murderers in history, responsible for the deaths of at least 45 million people between 1958 and 1962. It is not merely the extent of the catastrophe that dwarfs earlier estimates, but also the manner in which many people died: between two and three million victims were tortured to death or summarily killed, often for the slightest infraction.”
And that probably beats Koba the Dread’s record, but to this day all we ever hear about and the only genocidal murderer kids are taught about in skool is Dolphie. Funny how that works. And in mentioning Dolphie’s crimes against humanity, we only ever hear about the European Jews. Never the Polish Catholics, the Ukrainian-Russians, or even Allied POWs. OR….the Allied murders of hundreds of thousands of German POWs under We Like Ike, MacArthur’s fellow hatchet man during the post Great War Bonus March. Ike hated Germans.
“Front Page Magazine – Michelle’s house continues to be built and maintained by slaves. Her lavish lifestyle of endless vacations, parties and public appearances is funded by millions and millions of slaves. It is unjust that a working family ought to work its fingers to the bone so that Michelle Obama can enjoy yet another sightseeing tour. It is unjust that a class of parasites claiming to be public servants can draw unlimited amounts of money on the credit of people trying to make ends meet. Nineteenth century slavery ceased to be an issue in the nineteenth century. Twenty-first century slavery is the issue that we must tackle today. Scarlett O’Hara’s slaves have been freed. It’s time to let Michelle’s slaves go free.”
She’s been a fucking parasite since her student days at Princeton.

Plus they’re on the front lines of the ongoing invasion and what fun that could be!
@spook,
I can respect making a choice. I’ll avoid monkey for health reasons, and dog because it would break the pact we made long ago.
Always wondered what the big deal with whale was, and especially after watching the show about the anti-whaling boat. It’s delicious. Like Kobe beef. That’s all it takes…

OFD sez avoid those places. Oh? They’re paying you a million dollars a week to go there to do a job? Is that worth getting your junk punctured and your throat cut or being stomped into the mud and paralyzed for life? Find another job. If that one pays that much, there’s another one somewhere that might not pay quite as much. Oh? It’s for your family’s support? Well, do they want you back in a wheelchair or a coffin? What kind of support will that be?
Avoid shit-holes. Avoid cities. Avoid crowds.
And avoid crowded city shit-holes.
LOVED Norway. Ate fish at every meal.
I would starve and be down to a 82 pound weakling as I do not like fish.
On my two trips to Norway I was also served reindeer prepared three different ways. It is quite good. I also ate fish as that is what the families we stayed with were eating. But as a regular diet, nope.
red tie EDS guy at corporate training about … jeesh … 20 years ago
I was with EDS in 1980 so that makes it about 30+ years ago. Never did go through the training but had to endure the dress code. It was a trade-off as the benefits were outstanding. Healthcare was at zero cost. Did not pay any premiums to the company and the company paid 90% of any prescriptions or doctor bills. Once you paid a certain amount (I forget the amount but it was not high) the company paid 100% of everything.

I also suspect she and Monica’s boyfriend have had some dealings under the table with less than desirable countries. Money slipped into their pockets by greasing the wheels of shady transactions.

I used to eat fish all the time as a yute in Northern Wisconsin. But it was all caught fresh from lakes and rivers. Fish fry Friday for years. Alas, I’m a slave to the cow, pig and chicken.

Combine this with the “Typhoid Mary” immigrants flooding in and we have a perfect storm of disease and destitution brewing.

One of the plants that I used to work at had one of the workers wife bringing in tamales for sale on Friday for 25 cents each. They were awesome and I would usually buy several. One day, one of the other guys commented on the fact that there was no stray cats around his house. There was almost a fight over that.

Shoot, that is nothing. Obola paid a ramsom of $400 million in foreign money to Iran.

Looks like the White House has a slush fund in foreign cash. Big one too.
Be careful traveling outside the USA. Now that Obola is paying ransoms, USA citizens are now much more subject to kidnapping .
Fear not for your memory, DadCooks. That topic was indeed called ABC (Atomic, Biological, Chemical) before it was changed to NBC (Nuclear, …). The change was before my time in the Army, but not much before, as plenty of manuals on the shelves still called it ABC. No idea of the reason for the change, unless someone in TRADOC wanted to use ABC for some other easy-to-remember acronym.

Copyright infringement for a Jackson 5 song.
@SteveF, as a child of the 50s my first “exposure” (pun intended) was to ABC as part of our “duck and cover” and Civil Defense indoctrination. Even up into the 60s/70s in my Navy career both ABC and NBC were used interchangeably on protection gear (suits, gloves, masks, respirators, test equipment, etc.) as some of the stuff we used was obviously from old stockpiles of the various services.
As another child of the 1950s, and small-town at that, I also remember the drills and the orange and black shelter stickers all over the place. Later, one of our teachers brought a crappy old b&w tee-vee set into the classroom on a stand so we could all see it and we watched Alan Shepherd’s flight in space. Or the launch of it, anyway. And just a bit later, we all wondered what everyone was talking about concerning those rockets in Cuba.
Fast-forward ten years or so and I’m guarding nuke-warhead-armed USAF fighters at the alert hangar at Bangor, Maine and also the nukes buried in underground bunkers at the off-site storage area. Aerospace Defense Command, children; and back in it after the first ‘Nam deployments to a radar site in northern Kalifornia, part of that long semi-circle of NORAD radar sites. There’s one up on the ridge overlooking the “city” here; now run by the FAA. Across the lake was Plattsburgh AFB, a SAC base. Mrs. OFD remembers the B52s coming and going.
