By on March 11th, 2016 in personal, weekly prepping

10:47 – Barbara is off to the gym, library, and supermarket. I wouldn’t say she’s completely happy with the state of the house, but I think she’s satisfied with the progress we’ve made. Upstairs is relatively organized and uncluttered, as is the downstairs finished area and lab area. The garage needs more work, but we’re getting there.

Yesterday, we got another 50 pounds of bread flour transferred to empty one-gallon Costco water bottles. I need to get those labeled and moved downstairs today. Flour is a really cheap way to store calories, albeit not nutritionally complete calories. A 50-pound bag costs only $13 and contains about 85,000 calories, or about six person-weeks’ worth. Supplemented with eight pounds or so of dry beans, a liter of cooking oil, and half a pound of salt, that provides complete nutrition, albeit not particularly tasty nutrition. As our 90 year old neighbor Bonnie says about her own food stockpile of potatoes, beans, and other long-term staples, “I may not like the flavor much, but I won’t starve.”

I also started rinsing out 2-liter Coke bottles. We’ll fill those with well water treated with dilute bleach, so they will be safe to use for drinking and cooking. But their real purpose is for flushing the toilets if we have a mid- to long-term power outage. We’ll fill them to 1.9 liters in case they freeze. Three of those bottles, 5.7 liters, is sufficient for one flush, so 300 of them will suffice for about 100 flushes, which in an emergency would be sufficient to last a month or so, assuming we have two to four people staying here. And 300 bottles really doesn’t take up that much space/volume, assuming we stack them in out-of-the-way places.

I started reading Fuel, Book 1 in the Best Laid Plans series, last night. It has lots of jarring flaws, such as the protagonist checking a pistol to see if there’s “a chamber in the round”, but overall so far it seems a lot better than most self-published PA novels. Assuming it holds up, I’ll read the others in the series, all of which are available free with Kindle Unlimited.

@RBT, BTW on “Dark Grid”, do you know if you read the unedited or the edited version? The author mentions that he had the first book in the series edited when he published the second book. I doubt that would have changed the story line very much though.

“Can we agree that calling the candidate with German ancestry “Hitler” is racist? It sure feels that way to me. I’m about half German, same as Trump. And it feels like a racial insult to me.”

“I’m not easily offended, but I don’t see any other way to interpret the incessant Hitler analogies directed at Trump. If he were female and Asian – with exactly the same policies – would we be comparing him to Hitler every five seconds?”

“The GOP candidates for president had a boring debate last night. My one-word summary is “capitulation.” Based on the energy on stage, it seems they stopped fighting. That means Trump can stroll to the nomination, assuming Florida goes as expected.”

BTW, Rush mentioned a little while ago on his radio show that he thinks Bernie is going to take Illinois, Ohio, and Florida. If so, Hillary is in trouble despite her supers.

“If he were female and Asian – with exactly the same policies – would we be comparing him to Hitler every five seconds?”

Hahaha. The only possible Asian equivalent for Hitler would be Mao, and the lefties and libturds and useful idiots adore Mao, who beat Hitler’s genocide numbers by orders of magnitude, but those, or the Lenin-Trotsky-Stalin slaughters never get mentioned in “polite society.” Das ist verboten. Or taught in our wunnerful publik skool gulag.

“If so, Hillary is in trouble despite her supers.”

I doubt it. The Demcrap hierarchy will find a way to beat Sanders as will their counterparts in regard to Trump. They’re all criminal scum anyway, who cares?

“I like the part about the husband shooting the guy a few more times just to make certain of the outcome.”

What? That was terrible, just terrible. Couldn’t he have just shot the guy once in the leg or sumthin’ instead of blasting away like that??? We don’t need anymore of these wacko armed-to-the-teeth vigilantes killing people; that’s what we have the police for…oh wait….

For a few seconds I thought you were off your rocker, meds failed, and it was time to commit you to a facility for the insane.

  7. OFD says:

“…and it was time to commit you to a facility for the insane.”

That time has long been and gone; it’s too late now! What meds? Only med I’m on is one tiny pill a day for “borderline” BP. Works good, too.

We had us a couple of escapees up this way last year, from the max facility across the lake up at Dannemora, NY. They didn’t get very far, though, basically living on the run like animals and busting into summer cabins in the middle of nowhere. Still, it took an army of cops WEEKS to run them down.

He has. It’s called the VA.

This is why I backup our entire LAN to three different devices each day.

I also backup our entire LAN to seven rotating external hard drives, each once every seven weeks, so that we can rollback up to six weeks if needful.

And our google based email does not allow EXE files inside attached ZIP files.

WRT Bernie taking Illinois, Ohio, and Florida: the good ol’ Chicago Election Fixing Machine is no longer working like it did in ol’ Boss Daley’s day. The Dumbocrats have not kept their methods up-to-date. A fifth and fin does not buy what it once used to and new Voter ID Laws are stopping the vote often folks.

The Dumbocrats also forgot that Michigan is full of moooslems who just love a Socialist like Bernie. Plus the Millenials are too absorbed in their Twatter and FartBook to get off their lazy asses to vote.

The parties are in for a big surprise, they are totally underestimating the power of anger to get out the vote.

It has taken Trump awhile to learn this political game, but he is a fast study and the last few days show he is going to be more formidable than ever. He has learned their game, now he is going to show them how it is done. The student is now the teacher. Watch and learn.

  15. OFD says:

Yeah, ’cause of course anyone who wants Linux on their laptop or desktop simply MUST be a developer, you know, those wanky geek types that type code all day that is full of bugs so other “developers” fix the bugs, etc., etc. (haha, no offense to you developers out there, just funnin’, y’all).

And previously only ENGINEERS needed the gigantic workstation monitors with super-duper graphics cards.

As for Trump and Sanders; we’ll just have to see how it all shakes out, but do not, under any circumstances, underestimate the power of the Party to scuttle one or the other and make sure their bitch gets in to do their bidding without question. And by bitch I mean either Cankles or any of the RINO ass-hats.

Our Winblows box was down as regards internet connectivity from last night until late this afternoon, thanks, I’m almost positive, to the latest flurry of Microslop “updates.” Nothing else had been changed. Messed with cables, router and computer reboots, ipconfig commands, Device Manager, etc., etc. for hours. Finally flushed DNS and re-registered it, did the release/renew thang, and rebooted one last time, and Bingo. What a major PITA; needless to say, all the Linux machines stayed on the net w/nary a problem or hiccup. And I do updates on them all the time. Showed it all to Mrs. OFD; more evidence piling up for ditching Winblows completely soon.

Now, 3rd ward is scary. I used to go to junior high with those kids. That was when public school busing started up in Houston (1973). They would arrive after a nice long one hour bus ride in Houston traffic, all hot and sweaty, to Johnston Junior High. Made for some interesting times.

Not here. See, that’s a peaceful protest against racism and fascism. Out in Oregon and Nevada and Idaho and Texas is where we have insurrections and those ARE dealt with appropriately.

Not to worry; more and more people are drawing the “appropriate” conclusions.

  36. JimL says:

    RE: Ransomware.

We got hit 4 different times. Two of them place list of files in directories so were easy to find. We simply restored those directories from the backup (20 minutes) before the infection. 1 was a hunt-&-find mission to find corrupted files. The last managed to wipe out our backup stuff far enough back that we lost some files. Eventually, FBI posted a “fix” website that would analyze an encrypted file and provide a fix.

In all cases, restricted access rights protected other divisions & departments from infection. Recently, one of the VPs jumped all over me because he doesn’t have access to everything. I explained that I don’t either, and I use an administrative account (without email access and on servers that don’t have internet browsers) to access files I don’t need on a daily basis. I think he’s still pissed at me. One of the presidents is in a similar situation.

It is NOT unreasonable to enforce reasonable restrictions to protect assets. The minion infections were bad enough. None of them cost more than $1,000 to recover. The entire network would be tens of thousands.

Which reminds me – I need to check on backups in the morning.

  37. lynn says:

in some countries this would be considered an insurrection

Such as the country you grew up in. That country has not existed for a while.

Wow, is that ever true. This is the reason why Trump is so popular. I doubt that he can restore it though. Maybe he can make it better than now.

BTW, my wife thinks that Dr. Ben Carson has agreed to be Trump’s running mate. Makes a lot of sense to me. Trump could do worse. And, that would be two total outsiders in DC. Against one million insiders.

  38. OFD says:

“…that would be two total outsiders in DC. Against one million insiders.”

Hopeless, even if true that neither Trump nor Carson were insiders, and not even counting the humongous entrenched bureaucracy.

“Such as the country you grew up in. That country has not existed for a while.”

I used to be accused of “hating the country” I grew up in, anytime I ventured my usual genuine paleoconservative criticism and complaints. Which was exactly the opposite of what was true, but that’s lefty ass-hats for ya, everything topsy-turvy in their wacky mirror world.

  39. medium wave says:

Excerpt from a letter on Jerry Pournelle’s site:

The Battleground Poll, which is equally funded by both Democrat and Republican research organizations, has, for nearly two decades, shown that self-identified conservatives outnumber self-identified liberals by two-to-one. This is irrespective of the candidates, issues, and other factors. The Republican establishment either doesn’t know this or doesn’t care. For decades they have done nothing but alienate the very people who could hand them permanent control of Congress and the White House.

If Trump takes the nomination and the GOP OB club sits it out, Trump still wins. Some conservatives are skeptical of him (I am one), but my guess is that most will be willing to give him a chance, seeing that he is hated by both the Democrats — particularly the mainstream media

    — and the GOP establishment that has betrayed them so often. They will be joined by many blue-collar Democrats as well. Bernie’s supporters will stay home or get drunk. Hillary may spend election day behind bars, out on bail, or at least under indictment. Certainly Trump will not play nice with her, as Romney did with Obama in 2012.

He will go after her like an angry pit bull on email, Benghazi, Bill’s women and much else.

Now, if only certain self-professed conservatives here could bestir themselves to vote ….

  40. brad says:

I like Mark Randazza’s take on the Chicago protests against Trump. Money quote: “when we use violence in politics, no matter what, the bad people always win.” If MoveOn is taking responsibility for violent protests, it’s so very kind of them to confess.

Seems to me that the right approach is careful preparation instead of cancellation. Most importantly, ensure that your supporters know that they must not start anything, and have plenty of embedded security to ensure this. Then exploit any violence by the other side to the hilt. Of course, reality intervenes – once the penny drops, anything can happen.

  41. Miles_Teg says:

Back in the day they constantly served as adoring carny barkers for such criminal scum as Larry Klinton and then Obola; now they’re very busy vituperating against them and hailing their new commie deity, Bernie Sanders. So Field Marshal Rodham is now on their shit-list, and as of today, evidently, so is her big lovable lug of a husband, who they couldn’t drop to their knees fast enough for back then. Soon they’ll be dumping all over Mr. Hopey-Changey, I’m guessing.

Then we have some fun thoughts on The Current Situation, with the “money quote” right here:

Enjoy, esp. the guided tour at the end of the ten most powerful nukes lit off so far; I’d forgotten about almost all of these, but man, the Soviets were VERY busy back in the day. The government already abuses the use of stingers. A backdoor will get abused just as much if not more.

Typical scenario. Person get arrested for blowing their nose in public. Government seizes their phone and asks for password. Person refuses. Government gets pissed. Government uses the backdoor to the device and starts looking for something. Government sends a child porn image to the phone from their extensive library. Government requests a warrant on suspicion of child porn on the device. Warrant is granted. Government now finds child porn on the person’s phone and they are now charged. The government got their revenge because the person stood up for their rights and pissed off some sleaze bag sergeant on a power trip.

Or phone is seized when officer finds out they have been filmed being an asshole. Backdoor is used to get access to the phone and video is erased. Thus any claims against the LEO are ignored because there is no evidence as camera in cruiser and on the LEO uniform conveniently had memory card failure. Less obvious than smashing the phone as has been done in the past.

Planting evidence has happened in the past and will happen again. Removing evidence against LEO’s has happened in the past and will happen again. With the backdoor capabilities government will abuse the capability.

Also, how many of you kidz put your personal data that relates to tax issues on your cell phones and other “mobile devices?”

    http://straightlinelogic.com/2016/03/12/much-more-than-trump-by-robert-gore/

This particular vet, however, has given up his “besieged decency” and the ballot box as a solution to the problems of a supposed democratic government. I believe the fuckers have no intention of allowing a peaceful reform and would rather incite revolution and civil war, believing they can control events. They can’t. It will mushroom and spiral outta control and send us all into entirely new historical territory. They may be able to keep the lid on for another couple of years, maybe even five to ten years, but the arithmetic is inevitable.

As a side note, sorta related, for those who are tearfully disappointed, perhaps, that Jebster ain’t gonna make it this time round:

While your northern correspondent was be-bopping around Uncle’s shit-pits in SEA, ol’ Jebster, just a few months older, was at Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, like his dear old dad and granddad, busy selling drugs and booze to his fellow students. He got jammed up at one point, ratted out his partners, and then skated. He is arguably the worst piece of shit among the current Bush krew of criminal scum. But plenty of Murkan derps were ready to rush out and mark their ballots for him to become the next Prez, probably at least as bad as Larry Klinton.

These are the people we’re supposed to run out and vote for? In preference to whom, Cankles? What’s the effin diff?

The lefty shitwads in this state managed to slip in both Serbs and Bosnian musloids and set ’em up in neighboring residence arrangements down in the “Queen City” of Burlap. They also let in a bunch of Somalis, several of whose male subjects later being arrested and charged with various misdemeanors like drug dealing, rape and murder. And our contractor guy now reports that in his small burg to the east of here they’re apparently renovating an elementary skool building and taking adjoining land by eminent domain with more building planned and rumors of incoming refugees, presumably musloids. No one can find out anything and it’s all “top-secret.”

This kind of chit is not gonna end well.
