By on July 8th, 2015 in politics, science kits

08:20 – I built a batch of chemistry kits yesterday. Today I’ll build more chemistry kits and then get started on forensic science kits. The rest of the week, I’ll be making up solutions, filling bottles, and building subassemblies.

I’m not going to bother following the Greece situation any more. Greece is toast no matter what transpires, Tsipras is finished, and ordinary Greeks are screwed for the indefinite future. Decades, anyway. But the EU is also screwed no matter what happens. If the Brits have any sense, they’ll distance themselves as much as possible from the EU fuster-cluck.

Meanwhile, the Chinese equities crash looms. Unlike Greece, China isn’t a piss-ant little country that no one cares about. China matters. The Chinese stock market is in the midst of a 1929-class crash, and is dragging Australia down with it. It’s a scary world out there. The only refuges are the US and Canada, which is scary in itself.

Patient in isolation with Ebola symptoms in New Jersey weeks after returning from West Africa

I guess we’ll see when the test results come back. If they’re positive, anyone want to guess at the number of also affecteds?

Outstanding! Greece, the EU, China and Ebola. And Jade Helm about to kick off full-bore in a week. A perfect storm?

  3. Robert Bruce Thompson says:

Depends on whether you use the scientists’ definition or the politicians’/bureaucrats’ definition. Scientists have known for 20 years or more that Ebola is air-transmissible. P’s/B’s denied that completely until pretty recently, when they decided that anyone seated in an airliner within one meter of an infected person was considered exposed. The reality, of course, is that an airliner is a closed system, and anyone on that flight should be considered exposed. They don’t allow that because then everyone would understand that they’re entirely incompetent and putting politics and political correctness above the risk of an epidemic or pandemic. West Africa should be rigidly quarantined. Anyone who travels there should be banned from leaving the area, permanently or until scientists can declare Ebola to be eradicated, not just in humans but in the animal vectors.

The probability of Ebola getting loose and becoming a pandemic is very, very low, but the damage that would occur is so overwhelming that no sane person would take a chance with it.

Which raises the question, are you guys prepared to self-quarantine for weeks to months?

Which raises the question, are you guys prepared to self-quarantine for weeks to months?

Yes, one month. I did some “panic buying” last time and feel pretty good about where I am.

I also got some PPEs at that time, and have added to them since. I scored several cases of tychem lab coats, pants, booties, etc. I’ve been buying face masks pretty regularly as I see them (and I’m surprised how often I see them.) I’ve got a full face respirator and cartridges for me. I’ve got face shield headgear and replaceable shields. Cases of gloves. I wouldn’t want to walk into an ebola ward, but I can PPE up and evac thru a crowd…

I’ve got bleach, and the tablets to make more, and a garden sprayer rated for bleach. I’ve got a tub for treating boots as you step thru.

I’ve got pedialyte, ors, and the stuff to make up more.

Airbourne ebola really is a zombie apocalypse scenario.

    nick

(true airbourne, like CDC defines it, not airbourne droplets like any rational person would define it.)

  5. OFD says:

    A month, probably.

And every time I sign in for an appointment at the VA, I get asked whether I’ve had any contact with persons traveling from that region or if I’ve traveled there myself, LOL. This has been going on since nearly the beginning of the “crisis.”

We’re working on extending that measly month to three and then six and then a year. Taking longer on one income, of course. And the other party is not entirely on board for this.

Shopper who sparked an Ebola scare after being sick in a New Jersey Wawa tests positive for Malaria

Which is NOT the same as testing negative for ebola. I’m just sayin’……

@OFD, yup the kids’ doctor’s office still asks that too.

Not unreasonable here in Houston with the mobility of the oil and gas industry and the large african population. Oh, and the actually cases in Dallas, let’s not forget those.

FBI reveals there are hundreds of victims of Florida ‘sextortion’ abuser who blackmailed teen girls with naked photos

“‘We know that youngsters don’t always make sound decisions. Today, with a smartphone or digital camera, an individual can take an inappropriate picture of themselves and 10 seconds later have it sent to someone.

‘Once that picture is gone, you lose all control over it, and what took 10 seconds can cause a lifetime of regret.’

Trust us, we are from the Federal government. When have I heard that before? Oh yeah, right before the CIA guy threatened me in my office about ten years ago.

  11. nick says:

Yep, we’re hearing the same nonsense they gabbled at us 20 years ago.

I’d like to know how many cases they were UNable to prosecute since the 90’s and key escrow and clipper chip hysteria. I’d bet NONE.

Who it is that the rulers wish to appoint as temporary overlord could be an interesting clue as to their intentions. Repub cretins are usually placed as caretakers/janitors, just to fill the space while other objectives are being met. Dem screwballs are used to stoke the fires of Hell, pretty much, as we have just seen for eight years and counting. But this model may be obsolete now. Time will tell.

The price for iron ore is heading south at a dizzying speed, which is killing our “junior” miners with high extraction costs. The Federal and several state governments qre whining because the reduction in royalties is killing their budgets so they can’t pork barrel as much.

  17. Jim B says:

I have an opportunity to get an HP Z400 workstation with an Intel Xeon Quad-Core W3565 3.2GHz processor for a really good price. I have not been watching parts and builds for quite a while, so I tried to find out how well this stacks up against a recent i5 or i7. It looks pretty good, and even has ECC RAM, a plus for me. I also have a soft spot in my head for older HP products, so I probably will get it in spite of any sane advice 🙂

Anyway, my intent is to put Mint Linux on it to use for photo editing, mostly with digiKam. On a much slower machine, some tasks, such as the refocus tool, often take a minute or two to accomplish. This is on an older 32 bit 1.6 GHz dual core machine with hyperthreading enabled, and I have noticed that Linux doesn’t make use of more than one virtual core at a time. I wonder if this 64 bit workstation class machine would be a whole lot better. I am always skeptical of benchmarks, because many of them are game oriented and emphasize 3D performance, which is not an issue here.

I have read Ray Thompson’s posts about his Surface Pro with interest, but I will not be running Windows and certainly not an Adobe product (just me.) Any comments?

  18. Robert Bruce Thompson says:

I think you’d find it a big step up in speed. My current main desktop system is an older Core i7 980X, and that Xeon is almost a match for it.

I know, but it was a nice little daydream while it lasted. They’ll be denounced as counter-revolutionary running dog imperialists and forced to wear dunce caps and be marched around in public, before reporting to re-education rice paddies.

Also kinda fishy about the various entities that either crashed or stalled out for a few hours earlier today, all around the same time. But hey, move along citizen, nothing to see here…

Memo to would-be Montreal visitors/touristas: Do. Not. Go. There. Now.

What shoulda been a 3.5-hour trip to retrieve wife from the Pierre Turd-Dough Airport became 6.5 hours, thanks to:

    1.) rush-hour, from 3-8 PM, evidently

2.) piss-poor signage for major routes and destinations

3.) extensive highway construction and repair

4.) Maniacal Montreal motor vehicle operators

What a fucking royal nightmarish PITA today. Bumper-to-bumper for hours. I fantasized throughout about bombing and strafing runs with a variety of aircraft. And lining up various city, provincial and Fed perps against firing squad walls.
