09:17 – I finally finished the first book in Matt Bracken’s Enemies Trilogy last night. All I can say is that he completely misses the point. His bogeyman is “left-wing” elements of the federal government. The real enemy is the federal government, period. It has simply grown far too powerful. Even well-intentioned politicians and bureaucrats, of whom there are many, take well-intentioned actions that inevitably have evil consequences. Their goal is not to chip away at the freedoms of US citizens; that is merely the result of those actions. I am reminded of Lord Acton’s famous letter to Mary Gladstone.
I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge Pope and King unlike other men, with a favorable presumption that they did no wrong. If there is any presumption it is the other way against holders of power, increasing as the power increases. Historic responsibility has to make up for the want of legal responsibility. We ought to have more intel on that incident before jumping to any conclusions. One angle, with a link I posted earlier, had it about a long-running parking space dispute. And the shooter has some issues, apparently.
I do note, however, that the USA story makes it look like they’re just normal, everyday Murkan citizens who happen to be muslim. Need more info.

The AP and others claim that police reports have the three vics, two of them women, dead of gunshot wounds to their heads INSIDE THEIR APARTMENT, in the same building as the perp. He was the only one of the four armed with a gun, it seems, and it also seems he had to have deliberately gone over to their place with it and I don’t see how he doesn’t get premeditated homicide charges dropped on him. I dunno; maybe he went over to patch things up and they all just suddenly jumped him with boxcutters, but that isn’t what it sounds like so far. It sounds like he snapped and went over and blew their shit away. We ain’t allowed to do this here in the U.S., even if they are hadji scum. I think it’s too early to speculate whether he was in the right or not. If they attacked him, then by all means, self-defence was justified. But it remains to be seen whether they attacked him…
For me to accept that the guy’s self-defense was legally good, the women would have to be some kind of martial arts maniacs and the guy coming at him with boxcutters and they all three just jump his ass and he, being a crack pistol shot, drops all three of them instantly with head shots. After first going to their apartment on his own hook with no evil intent, after a series of previous confrontations and other reports of his bad attitude and public utterances. Based on what we have been led to believe by alleged police report data so far.
