07:56 – As we’re watching something on Netflix streaming, Barbara and I often see an actor or actress who looks familiar. Usually, it’s someone we’ve seen before, often in one or two episodes of several series. But sometimes the person just reminds us of someone else. I’ve commented several times that IMdB really needs a “looks like” or “reminds me of” link.
Here are some recent examples:
Michelle Burke (Little Men) and Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl). Other than the 15 year difference in ages, these two could be not just sisters, but identical twins.
Jessica Raine (Call the Midwife) and Helen Baxendale (Cold Feet). Again, other than the age difference, these two could be identical twins.
Anastasia Griffith (Copper) and Emily Vancamp (Reven8e). The resemblance here is more subtle, but I kept thinking that Griffith really reminded me of someone. Last night, seeing her in profile on Damages, it finally hit me. Barbara agreed instantly that she looks like Emily Vancamp.
IMDB has a list of People that look like other people, but I think it’s just one person’s thoughts. (Also, in skimming down the first page, I recognized fewer than half of the names. Does… does this mean I’m no longer cool and with it? Oh, the tragedy!)
I did not recognize 56 out of the hundred, i.e. most of the starlets of the present age, looks like. And I have long, long known that I am not cool and not with it, since grade school, in fact. Fuck ’em all.
50s here today, and the Bay looks like an ocean hah-buh again, with whitecaps and breakers, O the merry month of May rolls on!
Mrs. OFD is in Monterey, Kalifornia, picking up sea/beach glass and shells for her online jewelry biz just before heading 3.5 hours inland to her week’s gig in Modesto. Princess is enroute to Berlin. Son and DIL and grandkids moving to Holden, MA, next town northeast of Woostuh, OFD’s old stomping grounds from the Wonderful Eighties, when Woostuh was the Paris of the Eighties. And MIL will be heading up to Pigeon Hill, Noveau Brunswick, eleven hours north of here. Leaving OFD alone again, naturally. (cue up early 70’s Gilbert O’Sullivan tune)
OFD, I’ve just got to ask: what on Earth could she possible be doing in Modesto?
She is a National Council Mental Health First Aid instructor, one of only about ten or so in the whole country; with the others she trains mental health first aid instructors, usually from the emergency services, social services and similar fields to train their people and staff out in the areas where such services are needed. So, mostly cops, firefighters, EMTs, soldiers and other mil-spec personnel, social workers, etc., are the end-users in their place of work. As a brief example of her gig; she was on-site immediately after the shooting incident at Fort Hood a coupla years ago. Her employers are now expanding the program to include children and more law enforcement enterprises, and have also recently worked with the NFL.
She started out back in the Iron Age as a night admitting nurse at the Bellevue ER.
This week’s class is in Modesto; she’s had many previous gigs in Kalifornia in SF, SD, Fresno, Petaluma, and some other towns I don’t remember and has been in all but four or five U.S. states.
Also zillions of FF miles with the airlines, and is, as of last week, on the TSA’s “pre-approved” list and gets whisked by everyone else at the airports.
I am a worthless slug by comparison and would have been one of the end-user ex-soldier, ex-cop types who would have benefited from someone trained by her trainers many decades ago. (as it is, the folks down at the White River Junction VA Hospital up here were outstanding).
Continuing with names and real names and famous people:

Hi Bob, if I remember correctly, your mother passed away several years ago. I imagine today is a little tough for you.
I drove down the coast and surprised Mom at Church. We (and Dad and a friend of theirs) then went to lunch in Palacios and had a great time. Afterwards we gossiped about life and family and friends. Good times.
Found out from Mom that my 42 year first cousin who just showed up with stage 4 esophageal cancer (tumors in esophagus, spine and kidney) is being treated with the Herceptin drug. Apparently esophageal cancer is also caused by the HER2 gene. My wife was in the clinical study for HER2 positive breast cancer 7 years ago and was also treated with Herceptin. Wild.
BTW, Herceptin is made up of mouse spleens that have been blendered after the mouse was treated with trastuzumab and dissected. Many, many mice are used per treatment which costs about $50,000 for a years worth of treatments. I have no idea how the Doctors came up with this treatment but it is highly effective for advanced HER2 positive breast cancer like my wife had. It increased her 5 year chance of living from 65% to over 80%. 100% in her case as it has been over 7 years now. They actually ended the five year study early because of the effectiveness so that the people randomized out of the study could get the treatment.
Boy, I sure misread this one:
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-05-13/man-drives-15-kilometres-to-hospital-holding-his-sawn-off-arm/4685026
I’ve noticed it all day but read it as “Man drives to hospital holding his sawn-off shotgun” until now.
OIC, OFD. I suppose Modesto needs her services as much as any city in the US of A. I grew up in the Sierra foothills about 60 miles from Modesto and there’s not a whole helluva lot going on there.
I wouldn’t have thought so, either; she gets gigs in the unlikeliest places across the country and the classes are always full; maybe Modesto is a central site for surrounding communities and has a facility/building for this sort of thing where they can all gather? I’ll ask her when she calls tonight.
