By on February 17th, 2012 in lab day, science kits

10:13 – Today is a miscellaneous day. I’m going to take a break from writing and get some work done in the lab. I also have a few more purchase orders to get out for the biology kits.

Interestingly, I had to fight off a guy today who wanted to order a biology kit right now. As I pointed out, he had no idea what was in the kit or how much it would cost. He wanted to send me extra money and have me refund the difference when we’d finally set the price. I finally convinced him that we would allocate the very first kit to him and ship it as soon as it became available.

Maybe you don’t realize how difficult it is to find decent DIY secular science materials? Finding something that is cohesive, comprehensive, and credible but not boring is a challenge. Homeschooling in the younger grades is a snap; but when the kids are teenagers, there’s a gap between the fun “whiz bang” stuff and college level books.

RBT, I found a free Kindle book you just gotta get: A Primer On Biblical Worldview

A Primer on Biblical Worldview is a book outlining the elementary principles that are needed to have a proper understanding of science and the first 12 chapters of Genesis. This primer endeavors to help you evaluate your worldview and adjust it to align fully with the Bible so that you interpret your world through the lenses of Scripture.

I’ll bet it’ll open your eyes, tell you what you’ve been doing wrong your whole life, and make you a better, happier person. No, no, don’t think me now. You can thank me after your life has been turned around and you’re a better, happier person.

On the subject of books, did y’all see that Fred has released two mysteries for Kindle? Since I haven’t contributed to “Feed Fred” in a long time, I bought one of them. I’m not such a mystery fan, but I have a long plane trip coming up…

Oh, I know. Believe me, I’ve heard from many secular homeschool parents who ended up using “science” curricula from A Beka, BJUP, and similar garbage–literally crossing out the objectionable parts with Magic Marker–simply because they weren’t able to find rigorous, secular alternatives. We’re trying hard to get the basic and advanced high school sciences covered with hands-on kits, but there’s a ton of work involved.

@SteveF: I shouldn’t have clicked on that link. It made me curious, and I found her rather quickly in Google. She is the principal of a charter school on the outskirts of Dallas. While the school specifically claims to be non-sectarian, the information on her page is pretty blatantly religious. I wonder if she manages to get this kind of crap taught in her “non-sectarian” school?

  7. OFD says:

Dang, she is single and cute, too. Youse single guys oughta get with her and set her straight! Maybe some nice videos to watch together of Hitchens, Dawkins, et. al.

It must come from Liberty U. Everyone I have had a connection with, who has been involved with that school, somehow believes and maintains that its education is completely non-religious, while it was founded by Jerry Falwell and is the largest evangelical-funded school in the world.

SteveF: It’s $4.99 down here in Oz.

OFD: I’m at work so I dare not look up her web page, perhaps tonight if my Internet at home is back on… 🙁

Chuck: There’s plenty of schools like LibertyU, not all as mainstream and liberal as that august institution…
